He has a point. You cannot expect players to have an impact in 5 minutes TOI. Powe and Asham both know what it takes to win play-off matches and Mashinter is still better than Haley or Bickel on the 4th.

Speaking of which. What the hell happened to Benn Ferriero?

Two turnovers in the neutral zone that resulted in goals against if I recall correctly in one game. Benched, back to CT.

And Mashinter disappointed here. He wasn't at all what I expected.

But with the Rangers’ level of interest in ex-Sabres coach Lindy Ruff unknown and Coyotes coach Dave Tippett leaning toward re-signing in Phoenix, Vigneault is the only coach lined up for an interview with the Blueshirts whose resume shows he is Cup ready.

The Rangers also have obtained permission to interview up-and-coming minor-league coach Dallas Eakins, and the loyal-to-a-fault Sather no doubt is giving thought to hiring Mark Messier, who wants the job, as the Daily News first reported last Friday. But Eakins has never been an NHL head coach, and Messier has no NHL or AHL coaching experience. They both would be risky hires.

Piss and moan about the roster all you want. It's not changing. Not anytime soon.

If you want a new roster, then call Neil Smith so he can trade the organization back to the Dark Ages. Funny how current Rangers fans forgot how bad this team has been.

Bring in a new coach who has the balls to unbridle his studs. Torts was a wimp behind the bench. No balls. No risks.

You're really missing the point with drivel like this. The roster will need to change if this team is to ever win a championship. Period.

I dont know how bringing up when the team was terrible has anything to do with the current complaints of the roster, and if they are championship caliber. Its nothing but a distraction -- kind of like blaming Tortorella for the lack of a Stanley Cup.

Very thorough analysis, and I must admit, very interesting to get your perspective on things Ola. I do agree that AV benefited from the Sedins instead of vice-versa, sometimes though, when one coach fails with an organization to win a cup, he comes to another team even more motivated and hungry to share his philosophy with the players. I think it's possible AV can come here and implement a more effective NHL transition game for us.

What is Lindy Ruff's mentality? Is he more defensive minded? I do remember the Sabres being at the top of the league in GF post-lockout.

Those Buffalo teams were spectacular. Concecutive teams that got 110+ pts. Scored a ton of goals etc. Three lines that could score goals. Forwards scoring 35 goals from a 3rd line (with PP time of course).

His best team had a puckmoving D on each pairing, Campbell, Toni Lydman and Teppo Numminen.

But I am not the biggest fan of Lindy Ruff for our coaching job right now. Maybe its unfair. Maybe its unfair to expect a team that hasn't rebuilt like Pittsburgh and co and constantly loose a player here and there to UFA because of a self imposed budget, to compete. They haven't won a PO's series since 07' unless I am misstaken.

What I don't like is that to me it kind of seem like Lindy Ruff lost controll of what he was trying to achieve with his team. Plenty of teams out there have tough times, but those who builds consistent in the same direction; has defined roles for their players; manage to create that attitude in the walls, still manage to have success. Buffalo was one of the most spectacular teams in the league for several years for, I would like to say, three reasons. (i) How they used three scoring lines. (ii) How their D's moved the puck (more or less constantly one PMD on the ice). And, (iii) how they mixed that with a high uptempo style with size and physical ability.

When Ruff played that and before he started to loose players, he had 115 pts teams.

When he started to loose players, he didn't replace them with similar players while keep building in the same direction. They geared down on a regular basis. They gave up on trying to have a dynamic transition game. They started to back down more and more. Etc etc etc. NJD would never have done that. Detroit would never have done that. Philly would never have done that. The consistent teams in this league have their ups and downs, but they don't loose aim of what they are trying to do. NJD has had an extremely tough time with a aging roster, loosing 1st rounders in all kind of directions thanks to tampering, getting rid of Malahkov, fines for cap circumvention etc. Still somehow, they all of a sudden becomes complete because they manage to get someone like Zidlicky to do the work of a "Rafalski" for a short period of time and when they have built in that direction they know works, when everythings comes together, they can compete again.

I am not saying that Ruff couldn't be perfect for us. For all I know, he might as well just have had an impossible situation in Buffalo. But he hasn't rubbed me the right way the last years.

What's your opinion on Boucher, Ola?

I liked his fundamental approch in Tampa, but he just wasn't able to put it all together.

They are still a team in a building process. Was it Boucher or the blueline/goaltending? In the end, I was just never that impressed with how Tampa played when coached by Boucher.

You're seriously comparing Neil Smith's record as GM to Glen Sather's record? Seriously?

No, I imagine the people who are not as high on Ruff as you are is basing that more on the fact that he missed the playoffs as many times as he made them in his 14+ seasons.

When the complaint about a coach is that he failed to make the playoffs 14 seasons in a row, I wonder whether that bar might be set too high.

He did get to the third round 3 times and made the finals once. Nothing to sneeze at.

I'm not championing Ruff to be our next coach but we could do worse...and he made the finals with the best goalie in the world, could he do it in NYC?

Is that the complaint? I think the complaint was that he didnt make the playoffs 7/14 years in a league where more than half the teams make the playoffs. Didnt see anyone demanding 14/14.

So what amount of wins would change the negative sentiment, 8, 9, 10...?

Making the playoffs isn't easy. Especially, post-lockout where there seems to be more competition for the last few playoff spots. And he didn't "just make the playoffs" he got his team deep the majority of the times he made them.

the hockey those 05-06, 06-07 Sabres teams played was some of the most dynamic hockey i've ever seen. They were a machine. simply devastating offense. within seconds they had you on your heels, they cycled the puck furiously.

They had no "elite" talent, but a lot of smooth skating offensive minded players. I'm not sure what was their ultimate downfall, maybe not enough veteran talent? not physical enough?

No sooner did they start enjoying success, the team lost Drury and Briere, and that was it... Rupp hasn't been too impressive since then.

I remember fast, relentless forechecking, good PP, on those teams, he did a fine job in Buffalo

I will never say anything bad about Neil Smith....ever. There is only one GM who has brought us a Cup in the last 73 years and that is Smith. Same for Keenan....the guy was only here for one year and we won the Cup.

I'll take Smith over Sather any day.

I am not saying they need to rush this decision, but they need to get this sorted out ASAP. They need to get this guy in here and go through what he wants and what the organization wants in order to bring in the right personnel.

I think that's there plan — to have someone in place before the draft (which, of course, is also before free agency opens).

The odd thing is it's been over a week since Torts was fired and I don't believe they've interviewed anyone yet.
