I want a coach who will roll 4 lines and 3 d pairs, with a heavy forecheck, force the play to create oppurtunities, a coach who will let his dmen carry the puck into the offensive zone...

This is so key. McDonagh could never get PP time because Torts wouldn't trust anyone to take his minutes on D. I think Moore and Stralman are very capable of doing so, and even if they're not as good as McDonagh that;ll be well worth giving Mac some powerplay time.

Couldn't believe Torts saying you know I should have tried McD on the PP before this, we also have 4 dmen, McD, Strals, MDZ, Moore who can carry the puck out of the zone, use them..stop killing guys by rolling 2 1/2 lines and 2 d pairs, even in the regular season, you are wearing your core guys out, all the quality teams in this league roll 4 lines and 3 d pairs...

No one knows how Messier would be as coach (even though everyone here automatically assumes he'll suck) and there haven't been any rumors about him in a week yet 75% of the posts are about him.

No rumors about him in a week? There is an article in today's Post discussing that Messier would need experienced assistant coaches if he were named coach.

Guess ya missed it.

Some moron in the Wall Street Journal wants the Rangers to hire him and cites Messier coaching his 8-year-old son's hockey team as his coaching experience. Le sigh.

Articles from the press who are trying to sell papers is not the same as rumors from real hockey journalists. The one and only rumor was that Messier was interested in coaching. Nothing since then at all. Not whether the Rangers are considering him or if he's interviewing or is a legitimate contender for the job. Nothing, just the press taking a story and giving it a life of its own.

Nobody is assuming that he will suck. The people who are questioning Messier as a candidate are more concerned with the fact that he was little to no coaching experience to speak of and no body of work to look at. Again, there's enough guesswork and projecting when it comes to picking a coach. To me, adding in "maybe he'll be a good coach" is adding in an extra and unnecessary level of unknown. There should be a body of work you can look to and know if a candidate is a good coach or not and evaluate who has the best chance to make the team successful.

What does that have to do with anything? (although JG does correctly point of the article in today's Post). And until it's announced that Messier has withdrawn his name from consideration or it's announced that he's no longer a candidate or the Rangers hire someone other than him, than he's still in the mix.

Not sure why you posted this...I was referring to the article in today's NY Post.

How good were you at anything you've ever done, the first time you did it? There are things he needs to learn, that he hasn't learned yet, because he hasn't been a coach yet. Yeah, he might be able to learn quickly on the job and be successful, but are you willing to take that chance? I'm not. The odds are highly against that happening.

I want a team that has 12 forwards, and 6 defensemen that deserve/are capable to be rolled all game. The Rangers aren't that type of team right now.

Do what we have to, to fill out our depth, but it's really important not to wear your best players out especially in the regular season...

I am not in favor of Messier as coach. Too big a risk to take with a team that fancies itself as competitors for a CUP, but....

Mike Matheny, Mark Jackson, Robin Ventura

Different sports, but those are three goes who have had some success coaching with absolutely zero coaching expereince at any level. To be a successful coach, three important qualities would be:
know the game, command respect, communicate well.

We probably can check all three of those boxes on Messier's resume.

I don't think he automatically fails because he's never done it before.

What are they supposed to do? They've tried an awful lot to fill out the bottom and middle of the lineup, and it really hasnt worked out all that well.

Tortorella was made out to be some sort of villain because he limited the minutes of the 4th line and 3rd defensive pairing. The truth of the matter is that those players just weren't very good, and certainly didnt deserve to be rolled all game.

4th line / 3rd pair not deserving because they aren't capable or because they were never trusted and confidence eroded under Torts?

Chicken or the egg?

A healthy Rangers' D has that quality.

Staal-Girardi
McDonagh-Stralman
Moore-MDZ

Or however you want to make the pairs. That's a group of 6 very good players.

The forwards need a bit of work, though. It'll be interesting to see what rookie players can make an impact in camp, we have a bunch of players that look like they may be ready to take the next step; Fast, Lindberg, Miller, Thomas, Hrivik. I think two of first three players have a great chance at cracking the roster. I wouldn't mind seeing these players in a bottom-6 role, instead of seeing the retreads we see every season.

Don't worry, he'll be announced as the new HC soon enough.

We never even actually had a fourth line...just three guys who at that point in time were not part of the top three lines. If Tortorella had rolled those three as often as his top line at even strength, people would have gone ballistic over that.

Tortorella did not have a legitimate fourth line that was a line, like Julien did.

I find it hard to believe that Darroll Powe, Arron Asham, Brandon Mashinter, etc, etc, were just waiting to break out and make a real impact if it wasnt for Torts.
