No one's perfect, exactly. However the fact that it just seems like their blueline is god awful and not disciplined makes me think they don't regard team defense as something needed.

Is there a coach out there that doesn't have some identifiable deficiency somewhere on their resume? Scotty Bowman and Al Arbour aren't available. We're not going to find the perfect guy. Whoever we get is going to come with question marks.

Totally agree. But let's at least bring in someone with question marks on their resume, as opposed to no resume whatsoever.

Going to go out on a limb and say the board is mostly at agreement (for once) that Messier getting the coaching job would be a disaster.

I can't believe its even a consideration at all...

Wait...

Its Sather, actually I can believe it.

Good name to put out there, he's got a future, but most likely with a young team not looking to 'take the next step' ;)

And yes, a coach needs to be a good leader, but part of that is having the respect of an entire team. If you struggle with basic X and O's of the game your team's not gonna listen to the Ra-Ra-Ra crap, and vice versa. A good Pro coach should have chutzspah, ego and know when and where to use it. I like Tippett, he's never too far up or too far down on average, he holds the ship together either way.

True. He'd be an interesting fit in Edmonton or Dallas.

Tippet makes me nervous. Not because I dislike him or his style, but because the longer he waits to make his decision, the fewer options will be left for us if he chooses to stick with the Yotes.

Are the Rangers allowed to talk to Tippet right now?

Think I'll come back in here when there is actually something to discuss.

I agree that there are no Bowman's out there.

What the Rangers need is a coach with experience in coaching an NHL team. Why? Because they are a playoff team that is aiming to win the Cup soon. They do not have 2 or 3 or 4 years to give an AHL coach like Eakins or a guy with no experience in coaching like Messier so that they can learn how to be an NHL coach!

In my opinion the #1 option has to be Tibbets, if he decides not to re-sign with Phoenix. Why? Because Phoenix is worst than us in terms of offense and defense and goaltending and yet every season (except this season) Tibbets has managed to somehow get them into the playoffs. Now you give him a more talented team in the Rangers, and I think he can do wonders. He is known for doing More with Less. Well, we dont have the forward talent Pittsburgh or Chicago has. We also don't have a Chara or Doughty on the back end like like Boston and LA do. So we need a coach who can really squeeze everything he can out of this roster! Tibbets is the guy to do that. Torts did some of that with our D. Tibbets can do that with our offense as well I believe.

No. His contract is up on the 30th. Coyotes would have to grant us permission to talk to him.

Ah, I see. I would love Tippett too but I'm also not a fan of waiting around for him to decide what he's doing if it means we may miss out on Vigneault and get neither.

Scotty Bowman coached for the Blues before moving on to Montreal. Al Arbour succeeded Bowman in St Louis before moving on to the Islanders. Does anyone really think that those guys were seen as not having any flaws?

And, I wonder, were Islanders fans sick of Al Arbour after 5 years of playoff disappointment?

The point is, everyone has flaws until they win, including those who we don't think had any now.

Seriously what's with all the Messier talk. That would be a catastrophe.
There are no pros. There isn't even coaching experience to talk about.

yeah, last I read, Don Maloney (Coyotes GM) wants to resign Tippett, so he is not granting any teams permission to talk to him. Tippett wants more stability in ownership.

Nothing wrong with thinking for the better. Thinking this new HC lasts between 3-6 years again. Hence why if Mess really wants in, he needs to go start small and work his way up a hell of a lot because no one will have the stones to tell him he's gone IMO.

Three to six years? More likely two to three unless the Rangers win it all. Sather isn't getting any younger.

does it strike anyone else as odd that a team can forbid another team from talking to their coach? If I work for a bank, there's nothing stopping another bank from approuching me and offering me a job, especially as you wouldn't be starting until your current contract ran out

You don't have a contract at a Bank (unless you're a CEO or something) in which case, you wouldn't be allowed to talk to other companies/banks/entities etc. until your contract runs out.

Weird, I've had a contract at every place I've ever been employed and it has never stopped me from seeking out our being sought out for other employment.

Of course north american labour laws might be quite different to ours, so in that case, disregard

It's the way the coaching contracts are written--head coaches have clauses written into their contracts forcing them to get promission from the team to talk about another job. It makes sense, you can't really effectively coach a team when you're trying to leave it and if they were able to negotiate during the contract and sign up for a new job at the end of their contract, would anyone really want them to continue to coach a team they had already abandoned? Assistant coaches on the other hand, are likely to have escape clauses that allow them to interview for head coaching jobs.

Hockey coaches are not bankers, they are not interchangeable pieces: lose the former to a rival (during the season no less) and it turns your club, lose some assistant vp to another firm and the only question is who gets to take over his office.

Brooklyn, I understand all that, but to use Tippett as an example, he's not exactly 'coaching' right now. I'm sure he is involved in list meetings etc, but it's not going to undermine PHO moving forward if he was listening to offers or seeking another job. While his team is still playing, I understand, but once the season is over it seems odd to me

Exactly. How many guys become HOF-caliber coaches at their first coaching stop? It doesn't happen. If we're holding out for some amazingly qualified candidate, we'll all be disappointed.

It's the same way with the players. Can't talk to players on other teams until they officially become UFA. Professional sports, at least in NA, are different than many other jobs. Teams control the rights to players. You don't see that in the normal business world. People don't get drafted to work in a bank.

I work for a consulting company. That company hires me out to their clients to help them with software implementations, upgrades, etc. As part of my employment with my company, I am required to sign a no-compete clause, which means I can't go to work for any of our clients for 1 year after I leave our company.

I've gotten plenty of job offers from clients over the years and, in truth, if I wanted to take one of those jobs I could have. There's really nothing my company can do, even with that signed document, and it wouldn't be worth their effort to try.

But if the Rangers talked to Tippett without the coyotes' permission, the coyotes could appeal to the league and you can be sure the league would do something about it if they found evidence that it was true. In sports they call in tampering and the various leagues take it very seriously.

Our GM, for one. Then again, he had been the coach there for years already when they finally won.
