Messier did it on the ice. Theres no evidence whatsoever to suggest he can get the same reaction out of players that are not his teammates.

Messier already set back this franchise several years during his 2nd stint here as a player -- lets all pray he doesnt do it again in his first stint ever as an NHL coach.

Ill always be thankful for what he did in '94 - as a player. But the man has an ego the size of Manhattan -- hes done nothing to deserve the NYR coaching job on a silver platter.

Nice to see some truthful statements written about Messier for change.
Everybody seems to conveniently forget about his disastous 2nd run here from 2000-2004(ages 39-43) when he was robbing other players of 20 minutes per nite ice time and setting the team back all 4 years.
On top of that, he has an grandiose ego and is a control freak.

Let him go back to Edmonton where he belongs!

Messier was also captain for some of our worst years here...ppl forget that.

Born Leaders can lead..when they have the likes of Gretzky, Kurri, Leetch, Graves, Richter, MacTavish, Anderson, etc, etc, etc, etc

Talent is arguably more important than who the coach is. But having an average to above average talent team + a coach w/ ZERO experience = imminent disaster.

Says a lot that the only people possibly considering Mark Messier as a coach are his 'Old Boys' network of Kevin Lowe and (hopefully not) Glen Sather.

Barry Melrose... That idiot that had his own sort-of show during last years play-offs.

"This is Melrose's Place, AAAAAIIIIIM BARRY MELROSE"

Yes, you chicken sh**, we know who you are!

It's cause he's Mark Messier That's the ONLY REASON people think he'd be mega successful behind the bench.

Now you bring up an interesting point saying down the road. How far down the road do you imply? Brings up the decisions of whether or not this team is going to try to win now or start over again.

YEARS. As Sather said, whoever the next coach is will have a shelf live...in fact, everyone seems to have a shelf life EXCEPT SATHER. Let Messier prove he can take the grind of coaching day after day after day, with all the responsbilities that come with it, and bring more to coaching than 'delivering a message'.

Down the road at some point we'll be in the market for a new coach...unless something crazy happens, and Sather hires someone who is actually successful. Wait, what am I saying....:shakehead

It's Bylsma's fault Fleury has a .890 SVPCT over the last four postseasons?

Bylsma's an excellent coach. His players love him. People around here just dont realize that the cap wont allow dynasties. People think a guy's a failure if he's not in the SCF every year.

Who is anymore? This "Cup or Bust" is just BS from greedy fans. There are only three franchises who used that rhetoric -- 80s Oilers, 80s Isles and Habs.

The Pens are an uber-dominant regular-season team who outplay/outchance/outhustle/out-skill their opponents around 90 pct of the seasons. They did it with Crosby hurt. They did it with Letang hurt. They did it with Malkin hurt.

Thats coaching. Getting the most out of your players from the top down.

Greedy fans. Accept reality. There will be no more dynasties. If the Pens fire Bylsma, they will friggin regret it.

Nothing wrong with thinking for the better. Thinking this new HC lasts between 3-6 years again. Hence why if Mess really wants in, he needs to go start small and work his way up a hell of a lot because no one will have the stones to tell him he's gone IMO.

I really dont care who the Rangers pick, as long as the guy promotes a heavy forecheck, shots from the point at all times and allows the d-men to take chances.

I am not getting into the good/bad of Messier as a player but this is in essence my opinion.

You need your head examined if you think Messier would be a worthy candidate. It's such an unbelievably stupid choice for Sather. He's made one of those (Trottier) but hey at least BT had prior coaching experience.

Amen! Messier must think the coaching gig here with no experience (no less) is like a brand new toy for him. Whatever happens happens. Honestly, I have no faith whatsoever in the direction of the franchise as a whole as long as the "Teflon GM" aka "The Senile Old Fool" (who is living off his successes from 30 yrs ago) is steering the ship and that includes Hartford where players never seem to develop properly if at all.

We'll all be yelling "Mayday" by next January, book it!

Who forgets that?

Talent is easily more important than who the coach is.

Since Tortorellas "system" amounted to nothing more than running 2 lines/2 pairings into the ground and moving targets defense, I'd say Messier already has a clear advantage...

And at least Messier is really tough, as opposed to that phony loud mouth.

Absolutely hilarious.

I dont think theres anything arguable about that whatsoever.

I disagree. I don't think Bylsma is the main reason Pitssburgh us losing...but I think he'shad his fair share of highly questionable decisions.

Like, Iginla on the LW, and on the Malkin/Neal line. He fit in wonderfully with Crosby on the RW. Also, no Iginla on the first PP unit. They lack a right handed one-timer. Letang is awesome, but he's not really know for his one-timer. Iginla is.

Also, I think Fleury is starting tomorrow. That's a mistake right there.

That's a problem. Fleury is not a great goalie. He's beaten quickly and ***** himself when it happens. Vokoun is the steady option still....

I agree big mistake with Fleury

'At least Messier is really tough?' Seriously?

How can people not blame Bylsma for this meltdown? This is the second straight season they are dominant in the reg. season but have a meltdown in the play-offs. Last year it was the first round, this year in the 3rd, but still.

Relying on Fleury is just the stupidest thing I've seen any coach do in recent years. Vokoun should have been the no. 1 goalie from the start. On top of that, he pulls a goalie after conceding 3 goals which, unlike Bylsma seems to think, are not the fault of that goalie. Vokoun was fine but he got beat due to Crosby and Letang pulling a DZ

Pitts has no team D. That is coaching staff's and front office brass' fault. They need to focus on raking them defensemen in. Teaching team D to their guys

I don't think Blysma is solely to blame for the Penguins' failures. I think the Pens have a very soft, yet weak defensive blueline. I mean, when Douglas Murray and a washed up Brooks Orpik are your best defensive players, and when you have MARK EATON paired with Letang, there's a problem.

I do, however, don't think he has done much to help combat their issues. He hasn't been able to keep his team disciplined, either.

There dmen are less than ordinary, except for Letang

Is there a coach out there that doesn't have some identifiable deficiency somewhere on their resume? Scotty Bowman and Al Arbour aren't available. We're not going to find the perfect guy. Whoever we get is going to come with question marks.
