Confirmed with Link: Head Coach Vacancy Pt III: How's your spelling? (Eakins/Vigneault/Messier/Gretzky)

I don't think he'll get results here. Look at what he did in Montreal, look at his choking record in Vancouver. He was downright outcoached in the SCF's. With that team he should have won a cup.

I also don't think AV is the coach that makes Henrik Lundquist want to stay. He is too defensive minded, too much like Torts.

Vanc did have one of the most explosive offenses though, the year they went to SCF.

edit: although what were they, outscored 29-8, in a 7 game series? Not good.

This Messier power trip is legit. He's just that kind of guy, apparently the millions he made playing here wasn't compensation enough, now he wants to try his hand at coaching and thinks the organization owes him. Being called "the Messiah" does that to a guy.

Sather doesn't owe him a thing, he's a big part of Messier's success as a player already, hopefully he realizes that.

Hopefully Clark and Gorton are the voice of reason telling him to get an actual coach at this point.

Love Messier as a player but ignoring what he is, an egomaniac at this point just because he helped us win a cup is silly.

While I agree that Messier seems to be trying to get something for nothing, you've got their relationship backwards.

Messier's success as a player is a huge part of of Sather's career, not the other way around.

I don't care. I want whichever coach gets us wins. Be that Eakins, AV, Messier or Gretzky.

If we hire Messier or Gretzky and go on to win the cup, I will care less about the cup, and moer about serving up some crow for people. If the front office feels that Messier can coach them to the cup, by all means, try it.

If the Queen had balls she'd be the King.

As for who scored the Cup winner in 94, I've looked at it dozens of times and I still can't tell. Sometimes I think it's Mess, sometimes I think it's Noonan. On my last look, I thought it was Mess.

Bigger questions: can Sather say no to him? Does he want to?

I wonder... if Sather wasn't going to do his due diligence and just hire Messier or Gretzky, wouldn't he have done it already?

Or are we all of the opinion that Sather is just biding his time so it LOOKS like he searched for the right guy?

sathers already hated enough by our fan base, he shouldnt really care what the large part of the fan base who want a guy who hasnt coached a game of hockey to be our next coach think

Right, so if it was definitely Messier or Gretzky, why aren't they coach already?

Simple. You have to at least put on the appearance of going through the process.

Messier/Leetch will be announced soon enough.

The person I was quoting was saying that Sather has no reason to care about appearances with a fan base who already hates him. I mentioned what you said in the post he was responding to. Try to follow along ;)

I tend to lean towards Sather not caring about appearances, by the way.

My bad...missed that. And while he may not care about it, it's a pretty bold move to hire an inexperienced coach without actually giving it much consideration and at least explore the alternatives before coming to that conclusion.

you may already know the answer to that one :sarcasm:

I might have misinterpreted what you said about Sather caring about what our fan base thinks.

When has Sather shown any inkling of caring what people, media, fanbase or otherwise, think of his decisions? He isn't beholden to Rangers fans, as that stupid ineffectual "Fire Sather" rally proved. He's often excoriated in the media. What does he care? He has no need to put on the appearance of anything.

If he wanted Messier or Gretzky, this would be a very short process. Admittedly, it has only been a few days since the job opened up, so we could see something this week. I'm choosing, admittedly, to take the lack of a hiring as a good sign.

Personally, I'm terrified by the possibility that Sather goes through the process and then concludes that Messier should be the coach.

VAN also had the Sedin twins and a largely healthy Kesler that year. Rosters matter. Hilarious that people are acting like Vigneault is some sort of offensive genius.

That IS a terrifying possibility. And really not out of the realm of possibility. I'd like to think that Sather learned from his mistake with Trottier, but that might be wishful thinking.

nah youre right slats doesnt give a **** about us unless it means giving us the biggest star who will inevitably disappoint each offseason. i hope youre right about it not being mess or gretzky

Miller could become Kesler lite. Nash. Richards (as of now). Step. Kreider. Zucc.

There is some offensive talent here.

A very large part of the Sedin's success (in terms of offensive totals) and Kesler's success came from AV's style of coaching them.

Tippet, Vigneault, Ruff, Weight (dark horse).

I think those will be your final 4 candidates.

Right, so if it was definitely Messier or Gretzky, why aren't they coach already?

Sather explicitly said that he doesn't know what he wants in a coach. Firing Torts was another typical Sather move without any semblance of a plan.

But if you want to give him some credit, you could believe that he may not have had Mess or Gretz on his list to begin with. If that is the case, now that they have leaked it to the media that they are interested, he has to, at the very least, give them some consideration. Even if you assume he isn't feeling pressure from the fans/media/etc, you simply don't snub 'The Great One' and the 'Messiah'.

By assuming it was definitely Messier or Gretzky, you're limiting your perspective on the possibilities for how this played out. But either way - whether you believe they were in the mix from the start, or forced their way in; with this organization, and with Sather, it was entirely predictable that they would end up being a part of the discussion.

LOL. What? I'm not saying Miller is a bust, but what? You're expecting Miller to be Kesler? Man, this board sometimes.

And if you think any one of Nash, Richie, Step, Kreider, or Zucc has anywhere near the creativity and offensive skill that the Sedin twins do, then it is pointless to try to have this debate with you.

A very large part of the Sedin's success (in terms of offensive totals) and Kesler's success came from AV's style of coaching them.

In terms of offensive zone starts, sure. In terms of their innate offensive creativity? Hell no.
