They gloat and brag about a bunch of players in Vancouver, guys like Bieksa, Edler, Sami Salo, Kesler and co, and many others over the years, have supposedly been the best in the league. But from my point of view, they are an extreme top line team. The Sedins won concecutive Art Ross Trophy's lately. They are spending a ton of ice time in the attacking zone, every night, no matter who they play against. And I can guarantee you that the Sedin's basically aren't coached. They do their thing, and would do it with every single coach in this league or the AHL.

So AV has basically only coached the 2nd to 4th line in Van. More or less atleast.

starting to think this is either a smoke screen or a "see, the job has candidates" situation to lure other coaches in
 
I think Holik nailed the reason why Messier would leak his interest to media... it's to whip all the Messier fanboys and casual fans into a frenzy and put Sather in a difficult spot PR-wise if he doesn't hire Messier as coach.

Hopefully, Holik (and Messier) are overestimating how many Rangers fans actually want Messier as coach.
 
Here's some fun things inspired by the main board:

No coach since 1980 has won the Cup in anything later than his 4th year with a team, except Scotty Bowman, Glen Sather and Al Arbour. The point is that most coaches win early in their tenures, and Tortorella was past that.

Of those 23 coaches, Glen Sather, Jean Perron, Terry Crisp, Marc Crawford, Ken Hitchcock, John Tortorella, Randy Carlyle and Dan Bylsma were in their first NHL stint. Of those 8, only Dan Bylsma won it during his first year. My point here is that new coaches, without experience, can still win Cups.

Also, of the 15 coaches beyond their first NHL stint, only Scotty Bowman had won a Cup in a previous stint, and he won it on his second. My point on this one is that, just because a coach wasn't able to find ultimate success with one or two teams doesn't mean he can't find it elsewhere (talking about the "flaws" of Vigneault and Ruff not having won a Cup).

Knowing the geniuses on our team, you'd have Girardi taking faceoffs while Boyle replaces Jim Ramsay.
 
Messier was hired in August 2009. Torts was hired in February 2009. Four hours Torts was terminated,Darren Dreger reports on NHL Live(NHL Network) that Messier wants to coach the Rangers and Messier turned down the Oilers coaching job last summer. The Messier and Oiler link was never reported by anyone. As soon as the first prominent spot opened up with the Rangers,there is Messier throwing his hat into the ring. Messier wanted to shove Sather out of the way to be GM in 2007. Messier has always had this sense of entitlement. In 1997,he wanted to be paid a 2nd time for winning the Cup. He should have told Sather to give him the Hartford coaching job sometime within the last few years to get some experience coaching a team. Go become an assistant coach with another NHL team. Go coach a CHL team. Buy one and coach it like Sutter,Roy and Hunter brothers did. The junior teams are cash machines. No that would mean having to leave the NY area and actually put the work in.

Adam Oates was an assistant coach with TB. Two years as an assistant coach with Jersey. Then he got the Caps head coaching job. Messier likes to be the boss. Not take orders from anyone. Craig MacTavish was an assistant coach with the Rangers for two years before becoming an assistant coach in Edmonton for a year. Then MacT became Oilers head coach. Messier wants to skip to the front of the line.

Not to mention the fact that Messier's ego would probably prevent him from ever being assistant coach.

If I were Sather and someone was willing to manipulate me in that way, I'd make sure not to hire that guy and make sure everyone in the world knew that's what happened. PR difficulties solved. Why would you maintain loyalty to someone who was willing to do that to you?
 
Sather has coached before, if he chooses Messier, maybe he sees something in Messier that he thinks he can jump right into the fire and make a good head coach.

I am excited to find out who the next coach will be and I am really excited to see what this team can do together next season!

Because Sather cares a lot about his personal relationship with Messier. And I'm not even sure he realizes or sees it as manipulation.

From what RB is reporting, it seems like Messier wanted to be GM in 2007 even though Sather had no intention of stepping down. Instead of telling him to screw off, Sather gave Messier the special assistant position a few years later. Sather has been loyal to Messier in the past even though Mess has overstepped his boundaries.

Saying you want to be GM when someone has the job is completely different than usurping the process of searching for a coach when there is a vacancy. Again, Sather shouldn't care about his personal relationship with Messier if it's obvious that Messier doesn't care about it either. Reciprocity is important.

Of course, we're just using conjecture here. All of this could be overblown and we have no clue whatsoever about what is really happening here.

When has Sather shown any inkling of caring what people, media, fanbase or otherwise, think of his decisions? He isn't beholden to Rangers fans, as that stupid ineffectual "Fire Sather" rally proved. He's often excoriated in the media. What does he care? He has no need to put on the appearance of anything.

If he wanted Messier or Gretzky, this would be a very short process. Admittedly, it has only been a few days since the job opened up, so we could see something this week. I'm choosing, admittedly, to take the lack of a hiring as a good sign.

I wish too, but that said, I think Sather works on his own time and even if he knew exactly who he was going to hire last week, he'd wait. After all, he's going to have to actually show up and run a press conference when he names a coach. Can't do it this week or maybe the next two weeks--being accessible to the media is hard work and he doesn't want to give the NY media the idea that they will actually see him on a regular basis.

The Post article from today actually mentioned something about timing. Then again, it's not definite... more like speculation.

The Blueshirts likely will be compiling candidates to bring in to an organizational meeting in late June in La Quinta, Calif.

Then you better hope he picks the right coach, since the only way one of Sather's assistants is going to become GM is if Sather retires with another Stanley Cup ring.

And if he picks Gretzky or Messier, he'll be just as much on the hot seat this time round. And if they crash and burn? Don't think even Dolan could protect him.

Gretzky told Dreger he doesn't think he's the guy and that he'd coach but it's highly unlikely. Dreger also thinks Messier is highly unlikely and that the Rangers end up with AV.

Which is how I am leaning as well, but you never know with this franchise.
