I'm not sure why people think Messier is a smoke screen or whatever when the guy publicly stated he wants the job. Is he just having fun?

He's part of the front office, no? I believe it's a smokescreen. It could not be, I don't know.

He'd create enemies if he put his neck out there and then didn't succeed/wasn't awarded the job. Doesn't make much sense for his job security, one way or another. There are better ways of going about getting the job.

Also Mess has never shown any interest in coaching. He's remained consistent with wanting to be the GM. Mess as HC doesn't make sense on so many levels.

edit: Then again, I don't know Mess. He could be a completely irrational and inept individual.

On Messier--great leader but--his first go round with us he was pretty much everything that everyone said about him--an off ice, on ice inspiration that led the team in just about every sense imaginable and we won the cup in '94 (sorry Kershaw) on Messier's goal (actually scored by Brian Noonan). That may have been my first inkling that there was something kind of ****ed up about him (pretty much I hadn't worried all that much then about the Roger Neilson thing). But in the end it didn't matter that much-Noonan scored-Messier got the credit--we won. So what.

And then a few years later Messier went to Vancouver--but he did come back a few years after that. His second go around with the Rangers was a ****ing disappointment in just about every sense. The Rangers were making a lot of dumb free agent signings but Messier was in a decline by then but even so his influence in the locker and throughout the organization remained as solid as ever but he was turning more and more into a peripheral player who didn't seem to realize that he was a shell of his former self. He could still put up a decent amount of points but was kind of like Richards this year--making ****ed up plays all the time. And the locker room that he presided over began to resemble more and more some kind of country club. The Rangers were outspending every team in the league but for 7 long years we didn't make the playoffs. And right before the lockout year finally came the purge. The Rangers were full of overpaid has been star vets. They had very little on the farm. To me Messier had a part to play in that.

I'm not sure how Messier would play out as a coach but I'd have some serious concerns--not just because as RangerBoy states he hasn't done the work and just wants things handed to him--but because his relationship over the years to certain players he decided he didn't like in some way resembled his killing Roger Neilson's career in NY. The most famous of them would be Nedved but there were others like Vladimir Vorobiev. This stuff is not appropriate for a player no matter how big a star--to do.

And for those who are always pissed about Slats taking off for months during the off season and sometimes even in season--Messier does the same kind of ****. He's always away to Hilton ****ing Head Island with his boat. He'd extend his contract battles with the Rangers just to avoid training camp back the team against the wall--force them to capitulate and sign at the last moment to get every last $ he could. Messier was a great player for us at least the first time around and he was a huge reason we won the Cup but his ego is way over the top.

I wouldn't do this if I were the Rangers. Get a real coach. Someone who's put in his time and has had some level of success already.

Leetch is the one with the Conn Smythe.

Yes, but people will always remember "The Guarantee."

Agreed, Messier is a total egomaniac. He expects things to be given to him. I pray to God Sather doesn't give Messier what he wants. (GM or coach)

Interesting to hear from my man Bobby Holik in that article. That was kind of random, but I always liked him.

it seems like mess only wants to be coach because he realizes that gorton will probably become GM

He would be my first choice too, but I'd be surprised. Supposedly he's in extension talks with Phoenix. If we can't get him, I hope it's Eakins. Want no part of AV.

agreed. i want tippet or eakins then probably boucher. only circumstances i chose AV is if its between messier gretzky and AV

He's got the resume to do anything he wants in this league, someone will give him a chance. Go coach in the AHL or some obscure team like Phoenix when Gretzky coached them. Take an assistant GM job somewhere, someone will hire him.

Just not here, not right now.

Yep. Or maybe he's acting on a whim, like this:

Mess: I wanna be a GM one day!
Gorton: Nah, I'm gonna be GM after Glen
Glen: Torts, you're fired!
Mess: Hey, coaching sounds pretty good too! Hey Glen, can I be the new coach?

I don't care. I want whichever coach gets us wins. Be that Eakins, AV, Messier or Gretzky.

If we hire Messier or Gretzky and go on to win the cup, I will care less about the cup, and moer about serving up some crow for people. If the front office feels that Messier can coach them to the cup, by all means, try it.

I disagree with this entire post. Serving crow is more important than winning a cup? Ridiculous. Most of us have been around the game long enough to tell you that Messier would be a total disaster as a coach.

The more I think about it, the more I think Messier is gonna be the coach. It just has typical Ranger move written all over it.

Or do what Patrick Roy did. Coached in the Q for 8 years, paid his dues. Now he's coach and whatever else for the Avs. Messier can't just go in and expect everything to be handed to him on a silver platter.

honestly i have not watched him enough to know much about him. however looking at results i am not impressed. his offensive system seems to die in the playoffs. from what i have read he also seems like he gets outcoached and is unable to adapt. it sounds like what we just got rid of, no thank you

As is always the case, in the absence of facts, people will create melodrama.

Gretzky and Messier have stated their interest in the job. Has Sather stated his interest in either of them? Has he simply given them a respectful audience as people in the hockey community deserve, not intending to hire them? Has he told them he needs to do the due diligence? Has he refused them outright?

We really have no idea of the answer to these questions. Wild speculation might be fun for some of you, but for others, like me, it's pretty ******* annoying.

messier could be 100% interested in the job, and it still be a smokescreen that slats is seriously considering giving him the job. people seem to think that slats can't say no to messier, but maybe he just wants people to think that

I don't think he'll get results here. Look at what he did in Montreal, look at his choking record in Vancouver. He was downright outcoached in the SCF's. With that team he should have won a cup.

I also don't think AV is the coach that makes Henrik Lundquist want to stay. He is too defensive minded, too much like Torts.

Hence why they should go with two or three shared responsiblity head coaches.

Its like Slats said, its heard to find someone who is both Tom Renney and John Tortorella. The only herdle with more than one in charge, is getting them to cooperate. In the SEL that has not been any problem whatsoever with the teams that have tried...

There is no such thing as multiple head coaches. It's like saying a team in football has two QBs. Two QBs equals no QBs. Same with coaches. You can't operate a business with the buck stopping in multiple places.
