The forwards have full marks for the dismal efforts lately.

They made Chicago look like a cup contender. Beaten in almost every race and battle. Bad passes galore.

Two times against teams in the second half of a back to back. Pathetic.

You underscore just how bad they were. The giveaways in those 2 games were epic. Jets didn't start to play until they were down by 3 & 2. Both opponents vulnerable.

Either Chevy is not qualified to fix this or he does not want to.

Icing an AHL defence is disgusting and letting the Buff situation hang over our heads to rot is a total joke.

I don't know what you think he could have done. He has absolutely no control over the Buff situation.

I think people are forgetting, or ignoring, the injuries to our already patched together D. Bad as it might have been, the D corps Chevy thought he had would have been a lot better than the one he ended up with.

That's what its called. What is it?

Fictious anthropomorphized creation of deciduous derivation, from the overwrought mind of Stan Lee?

More simply, "I am groot".

Here, in primordial loquacious format.

If that... getting capable NHL D-men is not easy, other teams have been trying for longer with little success. So unless one or two of the guys in the system really step up to the plate (Samberg, Heinola) then even next year might be too optimistic, although they won't be this bad next season on the backend.

We can expect Kulikov, Beaulieu, Bitetto and Sbisa to be gone next year. I might keep Sbisa for the press box. Maybe.

Replace them with Samberg, Heinola, xxx, yyy. Those last 2 could conceivably also be rookies. Maybe Niku should be one of them. That will be a very inexperienced, mistake prone D corps. I don't think it gets fixed in one year.

I’d think that bottom pairing is Poolman and Niku as Poolman has been good enough to play on a 3rd pairing. Just played out of depth. If poolman is your worst D you are looking pretty good.

If Chevy was counting on Buff to lead the defense, he was mistaken. Last year Buff missed half the season with injuries. At 34 years old, and being a big man, his body was giving out. Chevy should have viewed any contribution from Buff as a bonus.

Yup. But we are still going to be a very inexperienced D corps next year. I think it will be a building year.

Regardless, he was still going to have to accommodate Buff's contract. So his options were limited.

We are coming back from the extended break with back to back Bruins and Blues....the coaching and media excuse will be expect sloppy play and a slow start. Even worse they are at home where they have been consistently poor. The first 7'days after the break we play Blues twice, Bruins and Preds....without a major shakeup four more losses. The org should be super concerned about where this team will be in 2 weeks during the prolonged Feb home stand.

Chevy fiddling while Rome burns is pretty on-brand for him. Goaltender problems? Sign a variety of backups and wait for a prospect to develop. Defense problems? Sign/pick up a bunch of fringe NHLers and wait for Samberg and Heinola and Stanley to make it.

Anyone expecting decisive action out of Mr. Dithers will probably have to wait for his hand to be forced or until he steps up to the mic in June at the draft.

That being said, the defense is so terrible, I fully expect a forced-hand moment, so get ready for Hamonic at $5.5M x 5 or something equally terrible.

Uuuoooh, ooouuuhhhhh.

'No one could have foreseen' is my point--sometimes a similar roster can have drastically different results, but if a solid foundation is in place a minor move and/or coaching change can be the catalyst for a team to re-emerge.

I don't know what happened last year, but it was dire and the team still needs to come out of it. To pretend that it's all over at this point--because of a dire defence, or bad goaltending, or corsi--is folly.

This team should have been a contender last year - before all those players left. They were not even close. For a while this fall, it appeared to have been corrected. Now, not so much. The malaise is back, like a fungal infection.

That's what makes me wonder about the ability to get up for a game, and the motivation of the team right now (and the recent past), is the fact that they CAN start playing like we know they can.

Why can't they put together a 60 minute effort like the best teams do? If it's the players, then it's still the coach imo. The coach should be able to get them to start right out of the gate, either by motivation or sitting the culprits.

Couple of years ago.....we could run 4 lines and had a certain amount of talent on the back end.
This year.....2 lines (when they decide to show up) and two proven commodities on D

It seems to me that Maurice is done. Not because a coaching change will help this season, but simply because he doesn't have a contract. I don't see how Chevy can sign him again under these circumstances. Now is the perfect time to pick the guy you think can actually help get things done, and if you aren't sure that's Maurice at this point then he has to go.

Yes, if Maurice does not have a contract for next year then it would be insane to keep him for the rest of this year.

Every team , sports journalist and fanbase knows our defense is a joke outside of Pionk and Morrissey.

The Buff situation was handled poorly and his communication with Chevy from training camp until now seems non existent.

Zero effort from Roslovic on goal one.

Bitetto leaves his defensive position and follows Dach along the wall. Three Jets Lowry, Roslovic & Niku are left in good position. The eventual goal scorer has even fallen to the ice.

Lowry's attention is diverted to the point. Should be no issue as both Niku & Roslovic have the only forward present anywhere near the hashmarks. Jack's sole focus is on the puck as is every other Jet. Nylander has stood up and begins his cut behind the entire defence.
Screen Shot 2020-01-20 at 12.34.51 PM.png

Only Lowry notices this has occurred. Niku properly attacks the point. Roslovic has spent 5 seconds on the ice moving all of 5 feet and his eyes never leave the puck, completely unaware of his surroundings.
Screen Shot 2020-01-20 at 12.35.32 PM.png

Only once the puck is in the process of being passed does Roslovic begin to react. Had he simply held his original position in the first photo he'd still be in place to defend. Puck watching at it's worst.
Screen Shot 2020-01-20 at 12.35.45 PM.png

Worse he makes zero effort to attack the defensive player. Niku, Lowry & Bitetto cover more ice in the frames that follow. Watching this in real time is an utter embarrassment.

To watch in real time here's the condensed game. Begins at 28 seconds.

@Arthur Fonzarelli Yeh it seems the forwards have completely abandoned their defensive responsibilities lately. The D is bad but the forwards are playing pond hockey.

Meanwhile Roslovic fancies himself as a centre. I can appreciated he's presently playing the wing, but any average centre should be a good defensive winger. The knock on Roslovic being nothing more than a well conditioned athlete and the furthest thing from a cerebral player is VERY present on this play.

This goal never occurs if he turns his head left for even a fraction of a second sometime around frame 4.
