I'm looking around the NHL and I'm just not seeing it. This is the current environment. Especially with the rumors of what teams have been looking for. I'd much rather this trade, than trading what Toronto wanted for Knies, for instance. Because at least Byram is an elite player, and a defenseman's impact is much, much higher than a winger.

Byram is going to improve the Hawks quite a bit. He is young enough that he fits their window. The contract is likely going to suck. That's my major concern.
Is Byram an elite player though? He’s been good he gets to play with Dahlin or Power. He’s not been good when he hasn’t been with one of those two.

There’s a lot that needs to go right if Byram is going to become the type of guy that can carry his pairing and control a game. Right now he’s a high end complimentary piece. I do think there’s more offense coming given he’ll get the keys to the powerplay but I’m not convinced by what the overall picture is going to look like when he no longer has any insulation.

This actually feels incredibly similar to trading the pick for Knies. In a vacuum you’d take the defenseman obviously but Knies is younger and cost controlled whereas they need to pay Byram. But Byram and Knies are prettt similar in terms of the caliber of player they are in the league

He hasn't been thus far. I'm still just so shocked they didn't get any forward prospect coming back. If that rumored SJ deal was on the table then just let them win bro lmfao

Nikishin trade also being explored. Shit after this deal I would be exploring it too. Didn't love what I saw from him in the playoffs if I'm being honest, but would have been interested in him at a lower price.

I’d be very wary of defenseman that Carolina is willing to move off

"Some guy" that scored 22 goals in the NHL
some guy that at the time was absolutely not worth more than crevier is now. at best it's a wash.
along with 2 mid round picks, and you could argue one of those 2 picks will be as good as the #4 pick this year.
i don't buy that, but if it's true then they should have just traded back for two mid firsts and a decent roster player they don't have to turn around and give way too much money to.
The last 2 years, 5 on 5

Byram - 15G 48A - 63pts
Dobson - 17G 42A - 59pts

Playoffs total
Byram - 4G 15A 40GP
Dobson - 0G 11A 44GP
he's scored slightly more 5v5 points in slightly more regular season games played.
Last year, Byram had a better CF%, FF%, SF%xGF%, HDCF%, HDGF%, worse On-Ice SH%, worse On-Ice sv%, less Off Zone starts.
starts actually don't matter. for the rest, in almost every single case, for byram's whole career he puts up underlying possession and shot quality numbers negative relative to his team, whereas dobson is almost always positive on every count. meaning: byram generally preforms worse relative to his team whereas dobson generally preforms better. the latter kind of of guy is a good bet to improve with more responsibility, whereas it is reasonable to wonder if the former will get better with worse teammates when he already has played worse relative to his team everywhere else.

Will San Jose finish as bridesmaid again or do they package 9 & 25 to get their D? Guessing Nikishin will pull an actual NHL player that can help now from someone else.

So they move no future picks and none of the pipeline that is rated #1 by pundits and still have 2 top 40 picks this year...for a guy that will be on their top pair, has ascended the last two years, former 4th oa pick, won a cup and fits the timeline..what is the issue here 😂

90/100 times Chicago is sitting on the clock at 4 looking at a defenseman they hope can be Byram in 4-5 years when Bedard is moving toward UFA status, if Bedard inked an 8 year extension last summer maybe they continue to build the pipeline and go Reid or Carels but it seems pretty clear Bedard is leveraging his committment to Chicago with Chicago's commitment to him via roster moves

He wasn't some guy at the time, he was a 2nd round pick that was an up and coming good player that showed well in the playoffs for Montreal.

How does that help the team next year, or the year after, or the year after that? or maybe ever?

No one cares about his whole career, we care about what he has done recently, his age 19-23 year old seasons dont mean much at this point. He didn't paly worse relative to his teammates this past year, he was their 2nd best Dman.

I don't know why some people get so aggressive and up in arms defending whatever this organization does

Like you know exactly who its going to be too even before opening the threads
Most people are saying this was a bit of an overpay. But we dont know what his contract will look like, what additional moves will be made, etc. Some of you that are freaking out over this seem to view this in a vaccuum only. The market rate for guys like this has gone very much up over the past few years. You dont like what we sent to get him, fair...but lets stop acting like the outcome of this can be determined before the guy even steps foot on the ice as a Hawk let alone we arent even at the damn draft or FA period yet lol..

he was JAG.

by getting a decent roster player, and two more assets that either trade as assets or come into the system. there was no pressing need to overpay just to make something bigger happen.

his whole career includes the last two seasons btw. that's how the word "whole" works.
He didn't paly worse relative to his teammates this past year
he objectively had worse possession and shot quality numbers than his team's average at 5v5 over the past 2 years. it wasn't so much worse that i would call him a detriment, but there is no indication from the numbers that he will be better with a worse team surrounding him.

Does that really matter these days? Contract or no contract, once a player asks out, if that player checks out mentally, team has to move them.

The timeline is July 1, 2030 which is when any trade protection on a Bedard contract would activate. So, if he gets a NMC or full NTC, then he has leverage to dictate the few places he would want to go if he demands out.

Maybe a Dman or F would hit the ground running when they arrive like Seider at age 20, but that would be Bedard's 6th NHL season.

Byram is a damn good player. Very excited he's here and gonna man PP1 which we sorely need. I didn't like the price to get him, but not because of the player. If anything I wish we got something a tad better than Greenway but he'll help with his size, PK ability and toughness on a team we are severely lacking in. I'm not worried about Byram's contract. I think he'll be more than worth it in the end.

I love that the assumption is we are hitching our wagon 100% to Byram. Rinzel and Levshunov can still be nasty. Top pair nasty. Vlasic is perfectly slotted now.

That’s the biggest thing. Assume they take Reid or Carels with 4, how long does it take them to reach Byram’s level? If they ever do.

It took Byram seven years to get to this point. Does anybody really want to wait seven years for Reid or Carels?
Pretty sure Bedard does not
