Is Byram an elite player though? He’s been good he gets to play with Dahlin or Power. He’s not been good when he hasn’t been with one of those two.I'm looking around the NHL and I'm just not seeing it. This is the current environment. Especially with the rumors of what teams have been looking for. I'd much rather this trade, than trading what Toronto wanted for Knies, for instance. Because at least Byram is an elite player, and a defenseman's impact is much, much higher than a winger.
Byram is going to improve the Hawks quite a bit. He is young enough that he fits their window. The contract is likely going to suck. That's my major concern.
There’s a lot that needs to go right if Byram is going to become the type of guy that can carry his pairing and control a game. Right now he’s a high end complimentary piece. I do think there’s more offense coming given he’ll get the keys to the powerplay but I’m not convinced by what the overall picture is going to look like when he no longer has any insulation.
This actually feels incredibly similar to trading the pick for Knies. In a vacuum you’d take the defenseman obviously but Knies is younger and cost controlled whereas they need to pay Byram. But Byram and Knies are prettt similar in terms of the caliber of player they are in the league
