I like Strome a lot in his current role but there is no way the Rangers are going to be able to afford him next year. Although they are $8M under the cap that money and more goes to the Fox and Zibinajad signings ($11.775 M increase). Georgiev is gone saving $1.5M and very possibly Nemeth saving another $1.5M . There is $1M in savings as the Henrik buyout comes off the books. And Kakko, Blais and Gauthier are RFA and some or all my get increases. So the issue is whether we should keep Strome. We should but we can't.

You sitting Schneider or Lundkvist out of camp? Which one do you piss off when both are ready?
How bout Jones?? Which one you want disgruntled asking for a trade??
Schneider could have started this year, with this team. Jones should have, if your basing it on just camp.
I have no problem with either in Hartford for a full year this season. But these kids want/need to play when ready.
As far as Strome goes, I’ve said many times, if you can get a better overall player that makes the line harder to play against as a whole, you take that trade for a slight point decrease.
Is there anyone who wouldn’t switch strome for PLD right now if possible? Even if Panarin is only a Ppg or 90 pt guy, instead of 100 plus and the line being exposed in stiff competition.
No way in hell do we sign strome for more then 3-4 years. At his age and with his career resurgence, he’d be dumb to take that loss of security, so the point is moot anyway, he’s likely a goner

yes correct. For the cap hit and term he’s gonna want/get, it’s a mathematical certainty he’s gone.
I’m thinking that’s why drury hasn’t even talked ext with him. He doesn’t want to get the numbers from Stromes agent and insult him while he’s playing solid hockey when the figures, particularly the length of term aren’t even going to be close to what strome is looking for.

gravey9 has hit the nail on the head. The Rangers are going to have to trade Kravtsov and/or a defenseman for a cost controlled center to replace Strome or to replace Chytil if he becomes the next 2C.

If you go back five years ago the Rangers farm system was empty. Over the last five years the Rangers have developed a great pool of young defensemen and wingers. But the team needs a young, quality, cost controlled center prospect who can play next year and the team is going to have to trade from its prospect strength to get one. I like Barron but I would be reluctant to count on him being a 3C of a team that wants to be a Stanley Cup contender.

I totally agree. While it is valid to look at our prospect pool and wonder if we have too many guys for too few open slots, it's also true that this team is going to be up against the cap until Trouba and Kreider's deals are up or they are traded. Which means, it's really important that we develop the talent we have and play them in key roles.

The only caveat I'd make is, if there's a very young center, say 23 and under, who is affordable for the next few years and under team control then I'd consider that. But. at the moment, we can't even afford to keep Strome this offseason if and when he demands 6m or north. We really can't afford anyone over 4m in our 2C role. So, the idea of trading chytil or lundkvist for someone that's going to come with a substantial cap hit is out of the question long term unless we move Trouba or Kreider before their movement clauses expire (unlikely!) or we're looking for a playoff rental. And if we're doing that, I'm not trading any of our first round picks for one playoff run. and that includes Kravtsov.

They’re kind of going to have no choice. Goodrow will be 1 good linemate for him next season. He’s a smart player, I think he’ll excel at the task. Especially flanked by 2 vets.
They really need him to hit the ground running next year out of camp.
Hopefully he’ll get some games with the rangers this season near the end on an injury call up or something. That way they can evaluate him a little more with his 2nd cup of coffee stint.
Like a barometer to see how he looks later in the year

...I certainly don’t want to stunt Schneider or Jones development just because Lundkvist is here.
Both those guys are too important for the future.

btw, this
" Schneider does not need to be installed as an NHL regular as a 21st birthday present, next fall. If he is not full time NHL til '23-24, no harm, no foul." (ie full time at age 22)
is not this
"if Schneider’s in the A at 23-24-25 he’s requesting a trade outta here"

anyway, i respect your passion, but can't relate to your certainty ("writing's on the wall" "I guarantee" "I’d wager agreements were made")

I cannot agree with your rush to judgement, that Lundkvist is surely less good or promising or important, than Schneider or Jones, overly relying on the small, most recent sample
Lundkvist's last 2 seasons playing at very top star level, in the world's 3rd strongest hockey league.
To me, that balances out against this totally unsurprising adjustment period to new league, new country, new rink size, new style of play
At this point Nils has still accomplished more in high-level hockey than Zac or Braden
They all 3 had extremely successful and recognized seasons last year (Robertson, too)
and, as you know, despite convenient wording ("He was the oldest of the 3") Nils is only 83 days older than Jones

anyway, 1 injury to a core 4 D, or a shuffling of the 3 marginal LHD (12,5,25) and windows begin to open

I will be glad if they fill the gaps ( a faceoff guy, a shoot-first RW) without sacrificing any blue-chip talent prematurely

We have given Gallant a great balance of youth and vets, of proven and promise, of skill and sandpaper,
and I am hoping they give it time to become what it can become

I wouldn’t mind if he scores less. Frankly I’d expect him to because LaF should take that void from strome away on the PP, where strome pumps his stats btw.
But hopefully a younger solid 200ft player who can play physical and win face offs.

against good teams in tight playoff hockey, what good is scoring a pt per game if your line is exposed for 2 or 3??
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying strome is always horrible or hate him like some. Frankly, he’s outperformed anything any of us imagined he would.
But you’ve got to call a spade a spade. He’s going to want more money then what he’s worth and for too long. We also need a better all around player in that spot. Hopefully he’s 25 or under

Definitely agree with all you are saying. Most likely our Strome replacement will be Chytil, with Chytil’s 3rd linereplacement being a few years out in the form of a Ryder Korczak or one of this years draft picks. This year likely having Goodrow center the third line.

Hopefully Strome keeps padding numbers so we get a nice return at the deadline.

he’s going to be fairly valuable especially with the Rangers able to eat half the salary.

But I think a lot will be disappointed when one of our d guys goes in a trade for a vet top 6 winger

If we continue winning there's no chance we're trading Strome at the deadline, come on.

The guy who stacked the farm system was tossed in a fit of rage and will most likely do the same for Montreal.

it’s a tough move to make, but unless we are prepared to sign him or he is willing to play on a similar aav for 3 plus years the proper business move is to trade him.

this team while winning now is building for the future he is either part of that future or not. If not time to get assets rather then looking short term.

Of course our owner is Jim Dolan so who knows

Crazy, to me, the urgency some NYR followers feel, to send away unique talents, and rush unproven players into key NHL roles...
Maybe the writing is on your bulletin board, but, seems to me, it is as likely, or moreso, that 2, or all 3, of those remain NYR a year from now.

Besides, at '2C,' the 'upgrade' talk seems inflated.
Strome will be difficult to retain given Cap considerations, and maybe team wants to evolve the roster,
but it is far from a given that #16 is replaced with a player who outproduces what he's been able to.
Yep. No rush here. Let these guys develop. Trade when it’s necessary or a great offer comes along. No need to force this. I agree a better ELC center would be a great addition but no urgency, if we just stay the course, things are looking solid.

Pro sports rosters are not like video games, you need 30 guys to get thru the real season, not 20.
And Schneider does not need to be installed as an NHL regular as a 21st birthday present, next fall. If he is not full time NHL til '23-24, no harm, no foul.
It will work out without forcing it.
I read all the posts here, fast-tracking Jones, Schneider, Berard to near-term regulars and that doesn't jive with what really happens in this league.
Each guys path to fulltime NHL status is dynamic, fluid, irregular, based on opportunity and situation, as well as performance and readiness.
NYR are blessed with both a solid, talented core, and a deep pipeline. It's gonna be fun to watch it morph to a higher level. And I dont think the FO is gonna make premature choices, or force too many abrupt changes.
A couple inevitable injuries, and openings occur for qualified guys, without forcing it.
Yep. When there’s really a real real logjam, it will be very clear. We’re not there yet.

minor movements between Pack and Jax

Pack already had 1 spare D, after returning Hajek, before recalling Taylor - anyone know, are there injuries?

Hartford's game tomorrow is postponed, due to "COVID-19 protocols affecting the Wolf Pack."

Providence is also shut down at the moment.

Came here to post this exact tweet sequence. Yeah it's bad at the moment. Better hope the Rangers don't suffer an injury because if they do, they're not gonna be able to recall anyone.

Can call up Othmann on an emergency loan. Do we know which players are in covid protocol? Got to be some that are healthy.

Best case scenario is no more of our forwards get hurt and none of our players catch Covid and Othmann stays in the OHL and we see him again in September.
