in principal I don't totally mind it but this was a really bad time to take that penalty and the Pack have the worst PK in the league.
i'm just not interested in the Packs win loss record. I only care about Chmelar's development. I think he and Sykora are the only non-Rempe players on the pack who could contribute at the NHL level and I'm not really a Rempe guy.

make the case
Once he gets a full season or maybe two under his belt, he'll show that a) he is an excellent defensive forward and b) he has enough skill and thinks the game at an advanced enough level to contribute offensively in a bottom six role. I think what he's shown playing out of position and on the fourth line in very limited time is quite encouraging. He's not a star by any means but I definitely see a potential NHL contributor.

EDIT: My valuation changes slightly if the Rangers don't think he's a center moving forward. I definitely think he can handle it as a pro but if they have him as a LW it makes him slightly less interesting, but still a candidate for an NHL role for sure.

Chmelar just put three different defenders on their wallets in one shift. I know I sound like a massive tire pumper but I'm just really fascinated by him lol

He's a big (6-4/5') strong guy who skates really well. They list him at 220 lbs. Get a guy who can skate well at that size and likes to make contact and he's a problem to deal with. He's not going to be a top 6 player but he's got a fairly decent skillset. On the current Ranger team there's nowhere for him to fit except on the 4th line. His upside is a 3rd liner if he can knock in 30/35 points anyway.

.....and the Rangers have a bunch of candidates to play in a future bottom 6 and lots of them are doing pretty well in the situations they're in. How it all plays out in the end......there's just not going to be room for all of them.

Chmelar is a rugged player.

For the last 5 minutes of this period Hartford should play without the puck. Just dump it in a crash and bang.
Everyone needs to finish their checks.

Does he fight, is he a pest? Rangers can use some agitators. Rangers have players that take lazy penalties so I guess the physical penalties are an upgrade especially when they are sticking up for themselves or a teammate.

I don’t know if he fights.
I don’t believe that roughing penalties are lazy penalties. Roughing penalties may be stupid penalties sometimes and acceptable penalties at other times if the team is trying to send a message.
Chemlar role is tracking bottom 9 forwards. I think it’s a good idea that those forwards have sandpaper.

He has never fought in his pro career but he is very aggressive and I feel like he'd be willing in a pinch.

I wouldn't call him a pest, he's just an aggressive rugged forward with a high motor. That in itself is pest-like but he's not really a chirper or anything like that.

Chmelar doesn’t need to fight. Hartford has Rempe, Harpur and Mackey. It’s already a tough lineup. If he happens to get jumped after a big hit, he looks to have the size and strength to handle himself.

I always see, “does he fight?” It’s pretty easy to look up for any player in question

I don’t mean as in enforcer, I meant as is he willing to defend a teammate or just will he just Mika away to the bench. Last thing the Rangers need is big guys that play small or pretend to be big but cant fight out of a paper bag.

I haven't seen the numbers for this year but last season there were something like .25 fights per game. It's great to be able to defend yourself, but honestly unless you're going to make it "your thing" like Rempe it's probably better to just stay away from it. You can stick up for a teammate and defend yourself and team in scrums without actually dropping the gloves. Chmelar isn't a fighter and he's not going to become one, which is probably for the best. Guy came from a part of the world where they don't allow fighting and then moved to the NCAA where they don't allow fighting. Not gonna be his thing except maybe in a really rare situation.

Edstrom wasn't a fighter but he plays rough game and has shown a willingness to fight when necessary. I think Chmelar will fit in the same category.

Have the love the fact that line is two 20 year olds with a 21 year old. All NYR drafted legit prospects
At the beginning of the year Roobroeck and BMB were on the fourth line. Roobroeck has now been moved up and BMB should be as well. I don't understand why he would be kept on the fourth line playing left wing. It's time to move him up and play with better players. I am excited by the prospect of a Roobroeck-Chmelar-BMB line although as the year goes on I would like to see BMB play center. With Roobroeck, BMB, Laba and Boulliard, the Rangers have some decent center prospects that we might see with the big club in 2-3 years.

Yes. I am interested to see how the young guys are playing at the end of the year.

Ruhwedel has been a big help to this team. They direly needed defensive help.
When I've watched the defensive mistakes have more often than not, except for Robertson, been poor forward coverage rather than defensive mistakes. Ruhwedel is a pro and Scanlin, Mackay and Fitzgerald all are solid AHL defensemen. The biggest issue is that none are great offensively and now with Mancini with the Rangers there is no one to run the power play. It's not surprising that the PP is near the bottom of the league.
