For those who follow the Pack...
How did they go from woeful to wagon?
This is a great question.
In thinking about it I believe that the goaltending had been pretty good throughout the year, the defense was pretty good with some hickcups, the PP was terrible, and the offense was mediocre. So what changed?
Hajak was sent down in February 10 and Carpenter was sent own February 28. The trades were made in late February and early March bringing in Lockwood, Clendening, Kalynuk and Blidh.
But going into mid March the Pack were on a four game losing streak. The team played five games over the next two weeks going 3-2 and giving up 5, 4, 2, 5 and 4 goals in those games. So those trades and demotions did not have any immediate positive effect.
The Pack then went on an 8 game winning streak before losing the season finale.
Take a look at the scores:
3/26: 5-1
3/29: 4-1
3/31: 5-0
4/1: 5-1
4/5: 2-1 (OT)
4/7: 6-2
4/8: 5-3
4/14: 4-0
4/15: 0-1
In the playoffs here are the scores:
4/19: 6-1
4/21: 7-1
4/28: 1-0
4/29: 2-1
In the last 13 games the Pack have given up more than 2 goals just once and that game the team gave up only 3.
While the offense certainly has picked up, the Pack did score 2 or fewer goals in 4 of these 13 games.
To me it's the defense that has made the difference. And when you're shutting the other team down and that team has to take more chances it leads to more opportunities to take advantage of the opponent's mistakes..
The goaltending has been excellent with Garand rising to the occasion in taking over the net full time.
Even with Robertson out the defense has limited high danger chances. Clendening and Jones are not defensive stalwarts but Hillman has been excellent replacing Robertson, Scanlin has returned to his first part of the season strong form playing right defense and Kalynuk and Emberson have been efficient. I think it was the 5-3 game on 4/8 where the team was leading 4-3 with a minute to go and a time out is called. The Pack could put out anyone. The coaches put out Scanlin and Hajak.
In addition during this period the Pack went 30 straight PKs without giving up a goal.
In at least two of the games the Pack gave up less than 20 shots on goal. That means the wingers are also doing their job.
The trades brought in 4 solid AHL players and the additions of Hajak and Carpenter made the team much stronger. It's amazing to see the difference between the NHL and AHL where a guy like Carpenter makes almost no impact at the NHL and is a solid PPG player at the AHL. Garand upping his game, Scanlin being very solid even while playing RD, Emberson improving his all round game, and contributions from the kids when given a chance all have helped turn the team's play around.
