One of the ripple effects of the Shattenkirk buyout is a bit of added pressure on the Wolf Pack to develop strong NHL depth forwards for 20-21 season. Given the dead cap space for 20-21, at least one of Strome or Namestnikov will be gone after this season.

That said... while those guys are overpaid, they are valuable for their flexibility and effectiveness in moving around the lineup. Ideally, the Rangers would fill their positions from within as it would give them some if not all of their cap flexibility in 20-21. If the team has to go outside the organization to replace Strome/Names, chances are, the cap savings will be smaller.

I think a big test for the HWP regime this season will be seeing how effective they are at developing guys like Gettinger, Elmer, Fogarty and Meskanen this year.

The Mariners make a trade. They traded two defensemen who just finished their rookie seasons in Maine (Derek Pratt and Garrett Cecere) for Jordan Klimek, a defenseman who just finished his rookie season in Kansas City. Klimek went 6G12A-18pts in 66 games for the Mavericks. Klimek played his college hockey at Northern Michigan.

Here is the press release on this trade: MARINERS ACQUIRE KLIMEK’S RIGHTS FROM KANSAS CITY - Maine Mariners

The release notes that the Mariners own his ECHL rights but that he hasn't signed a contract yet. He could be trying to receive an AHL contract or he might play in Europe. Also note that the release says the Mariners hold the ECHL rights to Scott Savage and Johnny Coughlin, a defenseman who played four years at Holy Cross but according to Elite Prospects Savage has an AHL contract this year and Coughlin has not yet signed with Maine. If Maine signs Klimek and Coughlin, the team would have seven defensemen under contract leading to the conclusion the team expects to see few if any players from Hartford.

Will they give out sunglasses and canes to the first 1000 attendees and have the organist play Three Blind Mice?

As ECHL contracts are not guaranteed and players can be released at anytime, an ECHL team signing a full roster of players isn't an indication of how many players they expect from their affiliate. AHL teams often sign players late or after training camp, so it would be hard to predict anyway. It's pretty typical for ECHL teams to sign a bunch of players, and then release them after the AHL players are sent down to get the roster down to 20.

Rick Carpiniello has a new article about the Hartford team at The Athletic. The Rangers are adding a 2nd assistant coach. David Cunniff. He recently coached in the Wild’s system. He has coached in the Devils and Sharks system. His father was John Cunniff who died in 2002. Cunniff was a close associate of Lou Lamoriello. He worked for Lou in various capacities.

Cunniff runs Cunniff Hockey. They help players develop their skills.

Cunniff adds some AHL experience to the staff.

Another Boston guy.

Rick wrote the Rangers were not happy with the development of their players in the AHL under previous staff. Hajek is mentioned. Hajek was better in the NHL than the AHL. That’s where Gord Murphy comes in. His coaching experience will help the numerous young D develop under his tutelage.

Knoblauch was at the top of the Rangers list of coaching candidates. Quinn and Knoblauch met in Vancouver at the draft.

Carp also says that Hartford will have additional developmental, training and skills coaching.

All very encouraging.

It is pretty alarming how they're just making these types of organizational decisions for Hartford, but I guess it's better late than never. Having a well-structured farm system in Hartford is absolutely paramount if they want this rebuild to be sustainable and successful for the next decade.

Clearly this is a difference between JD and Sather as President.

i think they believed in McCambridge, he had a resume.

but hiring, as McC's only assistant, a guy barely qualified to be a 3rd or 4th AC on a pro team, was a mystery to me...

Just to make sure I'm on the same page as the rest of the boards, are good moves now being attributed to JD, while the bad moves are still on Sather? :sarcasm:

Especially since he was the only coach. I don't know anything about the guy other than what's listed on his EP page, but it is pretty strange how a one-year college coach could make the jump to the AHL that quickly.

Very happy to see this.

I knew John Cuniff and he was a first class guy. Sorry to hear that he passed. Terrific wrist shot from the wing. Former teammate of Nick Fotiu

 Well, when there's evidence of a clear change in direction between the way a particular part of the organization operates... it doesn't have to be positive for JD and negative for Sather... just different.

“That’s our No. 1 job there – to teach the kids how to play, how to play the right way day in and day out, how to be a pro,” Drury said. “To borrow a line from Quinny, in pro hockey you really have the guys three hours a day to teach them and to have an influence on them. What you’re really trying to do in the minor leagues is to make sure those 21 other hours, when they’re on their own, they’re doing the right things, eating the right things, acting the right way, taking care of the body the right way so when they get the call from New York they’re ready to contribute, whether it’s short-term, long-term. Whatever it is, we want the player to be ready to help the Rangers on any given night.”

It’s probably safe to assume there were some issues with McCambridge in terms of the slow development of Andersson in his first full season in North America and with Libor Hajek, a top prospect who struggled as a first-year pro but shined in an admittedly small sample size of five NHL games before his season ended with a shoulder injury.

Now Knoblauch and Murphy will likely have the two young goalies, plus D-man Yegor Rykov (unless he beats out Hajek for a job) as well as young defensemen Ryan Lindgren and Joey Keane. More top defense prospects are on the way a year after next, including K’Andre Miller and Nils Lundkvist.

No they must just only acquire a home crowd.

Can’t they just fly in people from Canada?
