His window might be closing, but all he needs is an NHL coach that believe in him because he’s an NHL calibre player right now which he’s showed over the last two seasons.

Over the last two seasons he SHOWED that he’s not NHL caliber, it’s just you insisting that he is.

Yeah, i trust my own talent evaluation and i've seen 50+ Gilmour games over this time period, he's an elite AHL D-man and he did well in his short stint in the NHL... Amazing production in the AHL, excellent underlying metrics, elite transition game.... Good production in the NHL, very good rate production, positive underlying metrics.

He does play a high risk game so his blunders are noticeable, that's why the Eye test/memory is flawed. His strengths heavily outweigh his negatives. His actual defending is far from as bad as it's made out to be, his positioning is fine, his gap Control and stick work is good, he does make mistakes but in Exchange he very rarely just tosses the puck up the wall which means he'll have a high amount of controlled zone exits which is good for the team.

And yes, in this thread it's mostly just me fighting his fight right now, that's because the backward thinking Eye test crew is so annoying to argue against. I'm far from alone in thinking that Gilmour is actually good and deserves a shot.

I am sorry, and this is me respecting your opinion because i do know you watch Hartford and I also know you are a competent fan, but he is not NHL calibre based on what he has done at the AHL level at ages 24-25. He simply an older player dominating a much, much less quality league. The game is way too open down there, less defense, and that plays to his speed and offensive skill. But when he got his 28 NHL games and then his TC exhibition games this year, his defense was still a severe issue. An issue that many here are claiming they saw, but you are arguing that its not that bad. I find it hard to believe Quinn and the Organization would be so against bringing him up if there wasn’t something holding them back from doing so.

What are the “good rate metrics” that he showed at the NHL level. I need to know. Because from what I saw his production would be considered very average over an 82 game span.

....he might not be the next coming of Zdeno Chara as a defensive defenseman - but at this point of the season, have to believe he wouldn't be any worse than some other current Dmen playing for the big club.

Gilmour is not as bad defensively as he's made out to be - he is bad at turnovers because he's reckless. He does what Leetch used to do, but Leetch did it well, Gilmour is 50% turnovers and the rest of the coast-to-coasts are not as successful as Leetch's. An that's why he won't be in the NHL. It's rare that a 26 year old suddenly makes the NHL because normally development is over by this point. It's not as if the Rangers are the 90s Devils with an amazing defense. This is one of the worst teams in the NHL. If not for one winning streak, the Rangers are the 4th worst team in the NHL. Either way, they are 7th worst right now and may be 6th by the end of tonight if they lose to the Flames (as they should) and Vancouver defeats the Devils (as they should).

He was terrible in his one NHL stint. Terrible.

He will stay in the minors and wont see the NHL, at least not with us. Someone else can give him a shot at 26.

He really wasn't. This is just false and hyperbolic.
No its opinion. Just like yours an opinion that he wasnt terrible.

He was completely inept defensively. Countless mistakes.

Lets see who gives him his “well earned and deserved” shot. It wont be us. And with good reason.

I mean, if the organization thought more highly of him, wouldn't they have brought him up to get a cup of coffee like some others have had the opportunity?

Gropp seems to take a step in his development. Did he get better finding soft spots to take his shots and did other parts of his game (without a puck) improve?

He’s been pretty good all season, just getting more TOI with better linemates and PP TOI lately i think. He’s definitely better off the puck this season.

We have so many LD prospects and its the same for like 29 other teams out there. Skjei, Staal, Smith and Claesson are established NHLers. Hajak. Lindgren.

I don't think there is any point really in investing in Gilmour. The trade market for LDs is non-existent if its not top guys. We want to give Hajak a shot when an opportunity arises and so forth.

If we just could get rid of the tumors at LD, I would actually be pretty excited about what type of D Gilmour and co can become...

Gilmour still may get a callup once they get down to single digits in games. I'm all for just letting him and Lettieri play a lot the final few games. Big team needs a jolt. Lettieri should be given minutes with Ziba and Kreider and see if he can finish. If he's completely invisible time to move on from him.

One thing that hasn't been brought up on Gilmour is that Quinn might not think much of him from practice etc. AV had a very different philosophy a year ago.

Gilmour can opt to be a Group 6 unrestricted free agent because he will not have played enough NHL games by the time he is 26. It seems hard to believe Gilmour won't opt out and seek a better opportunity to make the NHL. He can see all of the left handed defensemen the Rangers have acquired and if the Rangers were really interested in him he would have been up a while ago. I'm not a big fan but why would the Rangers bring him up at this point if it is likely he is going to leave. The Rangers did sign Nieves and Fogarty who were the other two players who could have chosen to opt for group 6 free agency. So the Rangers either haven't offered a contract to Gilmour or they did and he turned it down.

I see this likely being the case, too. To his credit, though, he deserves the opportunity to be an NHL regular elsewhere....

To be clear, Gilmour doesn't need to "opt-out" of anything. His contract expires at the end of the year, so there's nothing to "opt-out" of. Assuming I remember correctly, Group 6 just means 3 professional seasons without playing 80 games.
