Brandon Crawley's production seems to be pretty good right now to start the year. Has he been much improved in his sophomore AHL season?

His 6 points are in the last 5 games. To be honest I don't know what gives because I've always seen him as a stay at home guy with some physical edge but lately his confidence to join in on the offense seems to be up.

He stills looks generally mediocre at everything to me. He's on an awesome production run right now, but I think it's an aberration more than anything. Hopefully I'm wrong.

From a points perspective he does. 6 in 8 games this year vs. 5 in 64 games last season. Not bad for a 21 year old physical defenseman.

Honestly? I don't think he's playing much better at all, maybe a bit better. He's just adding assists somehow, which is obviously a good thing, i just don't think he's playing much better overall.
It's quite possible he had bad puck luck last season and this is just regression, i'm not sure.

Teams win cups with the best players.

If the best player is a center, take the center. If the best player is a winger, take the winger.

Chicago has had ****ty center depth for a while now, it didn’t stop them from winning 3 cups.

I too hope to God that it’s Hughes for the rangers in June but it has nothing to do with him being a center. I’d feel the same way if he were a wing.

I mean, yes, you take BPA, but BPA at #1OA is almost always a center.

Hajek bumped down to the third pairing, has he struggled lately?

It feels like they just roll the pairings 5v5 so i wouldn't put too much stock in it. Would obviously be helpful to have any kind of TOI recorded but my feeling is that Hajek-Pedrie played a lot.

My son and I drove up to Hershey to watch yesterday’s Wolfpack-Bears game. This is the fifth year we have made the trip so we have a pretty good idea of what to expect at an AHL game.
The best way to summarize the game was to note the shoot out where it took seven rounds for either team to score a goal. Gropp — Holland — Fogarty — Meskonen — Andersson — Lindqvist — Butler all failed to put one past Bears goalie, Parker Milner. Yes, that Parker Milner.
It’s always dangerous to draw conclusions from one game and particularly a game that was the third game in a row. But it would be hard to say anything other than the game was disappointing if you were hoping there are many Wolfpack players ready to move to the Rangers.
The disappointment started even before the game with the Wolfpack scratching three prospects I hope to see, Sean Day, Ty Running and Ryan Lindgren. The Bears scratched the goalie, Samsanov, first round draft pick Lucan Johnson and Russian free agent Sergei Shumakov who has two points in five games. The Wolfpack then started the game with the line of Cole Schneider, Peter Holland and Bobby Butler. Isn’t Hartford supposed to be a development team?
The Wolfpack scored first in the second period with Michael Lindquist making a nice pass from the boards to Matt Belesky in the slot who scored. The Bears scored in the third period with a shot from the point being deflected into the net by the player who John Gilmour failed to cover adequately. The Wolfpack had a 90 second two man advantage late in the third period but couldn’t score.
Neither team managed any consistent pressure with constant stoppages. No one player dominated and no one was horrible. It was just a meh game.
I have a couple of notes on some of the prospects:
Lias Andersson — He is very smart. Plays penalty kill and power play. But anyone looking for him to be a dominant scorer in the NHL is likely to be disappointed. As I think Eco Bones said last week I see him being more like a Chris Drury type of player.
Steven Fogarty — I was more impressed with Fogarty than I was seeing him last year. He looks much more comfortable with the puck. He had a good chance to score in front of the net but Parker Milner made a nice save. Maybe he can be a defensive center with the Rangers.
Ryan Gropp — I think there still is a pulse. He had two good shots in the first period and unlike last year he won a couple of battles along the boards. He was given power play time and was the first shooter in the shootout. He is going to need a good center if he has any chance to be a decent player. Whenever he got the puck along the boards he was always looking to pass to his center. He doesn’t seem to like to carry the puck. I think it is a mistake to be playing him with Fontaine.
Gabriel Fontaine — Took a bad penalty and made a bonehead attempt to go one on four where he lost the puck. I know Fogarty is older and more experienced but he looks like a better defensive prospect than Fontaine.
Meskanen and Lindqvist — Both were fine but not exceptional. Better than Robin Kovacs and Malte Stromwell but neither dominated in the way you would like to see a European professional. Meskanen is much bigger than I anticipated.
Tim Gettinger — Had little impact five on five in the game positive or negative although he did well on the penalty kill.
Libor Hajek — I thought he was the best defensemen. Nothing great but very solid in the defensive end and made the plays he could in the offensive end.
Vince Pedrie — He had six shots on goal. The reason is he shoots as soon as he gets the puck. I don’t think Steve Valliquette would call these good shots.
Bigras - Crawley - Gilmour — Fine defensively except for Galmour failing to cover the Bear who deflected the puck, but not much offensively.
For the year the Wolfpack are in the top half of the league in scoring but at the bottom in defense. This game the Wolfpack showed good defensive presence although to be fair the Bears are near the bottom of the league in scoring but not generating much offense.
As many have pointed out this is a young team and we are early in the season but hopefully some of these guys, particularly the forwards, improve as the season moves on.

Yes I agree with Tobbe. While I don't have time played it felt to me like the Wolfpack were rolling out four lines and three defensive pairs consistently when there wasn't a penalty. I don't think Hajek was out for the 3x3 but he definitely played on the penalty kill.

It feels like they just roll the pairings 5v5 so i wouldn't put too much stock in it. Would obviously be helpful to have any kind of TOI recorded but my feeling is that Hajek-Pedrie played a lot.

The AHL schedule is brutal
It is. They seem to do more weekday games than they used to, but it's still almost exclusively weekend stuff. It's minor league hockey, often in markets that aren't huge, so they have to play games on weekends if they want to sell any meaningful amount of tickets.

Yeah, I understand the reason behind it, but it's killing for players. Well, Lundkvist played 4 games in 4 days last month so maybe he'd be happy to play in the AHL for a year haha

It's insane. If the AHL is serious about being a developmental league they should cut one game per weekend and have a 50-60 game regular season. Prospects don't need that amount of games anyway, I'm in agreement with @Ola that the European league game/practice balance is likely better for the development of young players.

E: Also, not sure I agree that there would be much less fans on a weekday. I generally feel more available to go to a game on a weekday after work than on a weekend, though that might perspective bias.

I would easily sign up for that. An in-prime Drury was a very nice player

I think Day moving down to ECHL is more of the case that he needs playing time.

Granted, other D have put themselves above Day due to performance, but that's not to say Day has been god-awful.

Yeah, no need to panic about Day going down to Maine, he looked fine in the games he played. Hopefully he gets a big role and does well in Maine and comes up in a week or two.
