Someone mentioned here earlier, maybe about a week ago, that Doughty was slowly becoming Dion Phaneuf 2.0. Man, the hiring of Darryl Sutter would definitely seal Doughty's fate lol. Let's talk about the package we'd receiver for Drew

Darryl had NOTHING to do with Dion becoming.. well.. the Dion that was traded away. That was all Dion and Keenan. Keenan just 'let them play'.

I didn't want Keenan on the Flames, but I thought: "Flames need another hard-#$# coach again." Instead, they got cute and cuddly Keenan. I was astounded.

I am 100% sure that if Darryl was still the coach, there is NO WAY that Dion would have regressed and have had 'issues' - out of the normal issues anyways that young players have. Keenan allowed his ego to expand, allowed him to not worry about defence, and so on. Darryl would have stapled his butt to the bench so fast.

I think this is a great move for Doughty, to be honest, as I do think he has been appearing to be following in Dion's footsteps a bit. Darryl will set him straight.

Expect him to have 'run-ins' with the media during the rough patches - he simply is just so poorly spoken. People will call him stuff like "Stupid farmer", "idiot", etc., but he is actually quite intelligent.
I guarantee you nobody will call him that, LA is not Canada. Media is more 'meh' when it comes to hockey and they will simply copy colleagues notes in case they don't understand something he said.

To be honest, I like what he says during interviews, he actually says a lot if one is listening well.

From an outsider's view looking in, and one that is pretty familiar with Darryl Sutter... I think it is a great move.

Darryl's biggest flaw is that he is absolutely HORRID with the media. They ate him alive in Calgary (and he doesn't hide the fact that he hates media). The continually ridiculed him.

His body of work really speaks for itself - he turned the Calgary Flames around. Sure, there was that 72 hour 'craziness' of trades, but that was from a GM perspective (and he had been exceptionally solid until that point).

Darryl as a coach - he will make all the players accountable. Just look at what he did with the Flames in the early 2000's. Years of bad coaching, poor player development, poor drafting... there was nothing to cheer about on the Flames except Jarome Iginla and Robyn Regehr. They didn't play as a unit. They didn't play a decent 'system'. Most importantly, they didn't play HARD.

Sutter came in, and changed the culture of the Flames. He FORCED everyone to buy in. You didn't buy in, you didn't play. Heck - he benched Jarome during some games. I remember Conroy laughing about it as they were talking about Darryl. Something along the lines of "Don't you two princesses worry about going back out there and chipping a nail. You guys are done for the night."

Seems like to me, LA is a very good team, and probably needs a 'tough as nails' coach. The players tuned out TM, sure.. but there are 2 reasons they can't tune out Darryl:

1) Just try. Really. He WILL force them to remain responsible.
2) LA just did a coaching change. Players know the next step is trades. You don't replace a coach twice in the same year.

As for Darryl stifling offence - I wouldn't worry about it. Darryl has a huge eye for talent. He puts players in positions to succeed. He pushes players. He makes players accountable to one another. He WILL make LA a team that is difficult to play against, and that will generate some additional offence. He doesn't play the trap. He demands work ethic. If you are lazy, you simply don't play. It is that simple with Darryl.

I am really happy to hear Darryl is in LA. Always thought he was a phenomenal coach. Expect him to have 'run-ins' with the media during the rough patches - he simply is just so poorly spoken. People will call him stuff like "Stupid farmer", "idiot", etc., but he is actually quite intelligent.

I really can't think of a better fit for LA right now. Sure, he is 'recycled' and 'old-school', but he is one of those coaches that should never have stopped coaching to begin with.

I am sure the first couple of weeks will still be 'rough' for LA, but in a month, I bet you are going to see a much, much better LA Kings skating hard every shift.

For the sake of my sanity, I hope you're right.

Everyone has to remember that Sutter did more than this team has achieved with much less talent and a similar team makeup. He may be perfect for the job. He wont let anyone play like they have so far in terms of unispired play. And this may be what Doughty needs to turn him the non Dion direction

I'm not too sure why we fire Murray to replace him with Sutter.

The team needs fresh air and adapting to the new NHL.
Something creative to make oponents defender out of position
Not sure where Sutter is fitting in here.

For one, Sutter would crack the whip on the players (Read: Penner).

Phaneuf's problem and I have said this before and a million times, search my posts, he started dating an actress.

I have dated these type of chicks and it is a lot to deal with. I can imagine living in Calgary and dating a chick who lives in LA, even though she is Canadian....you are constantly worrying about who they are hanging out with on the set, when you guys can make time for each other, etc...

Avery stunk when he dated Elisha, Stoll stinks now dating Katie Cassiday, Comrie is out of the NHL (due to injuries), and Mike Fisher has 11 goals in 48 games as Predator...?

These chicks and catering to them can change your life. Phaneuf is just now starting to look like he did years ago but still won't fight like he used to. And now Stoll wears a visor and has 2 goals. What do all these guys have in common?

Lol. It's funny because it's true.

This is funny, but true. Please keep Mike Richards out of the hollywood actress dating pool.

This is a well thought out, calm, objective post. It has no place on this board.

Flames fan coming in peace.
I think you guys honestly got a steal if it's true. He sucked as a GM but there's a damn good reason he was trusted for so long in Calgary. His coaching ability is off the charts. He gets a huge effort out of his players. He's most known for that mean tough defensive style sure, but if you look at his past teams, he's had nowhere close to the talent he would have to work with in LA. I think you would see a crazy mesh of system and talent, and it would make you guys much much harder to play.
I long for the days when Calgary's forecheck was unbeatable, when every player was crushing people behind the net, when teams couldn't get the puck out of their own damn zone because we were all over them. That was Daryl Sutter's in your face smash mouth brand of Hockey. If true I think we'll see a pick up season in LA.

Well stated my good man. Well stated indeed

Don't let him take the title of coach and you'll get your results. Sutter never had the starpower in Calgary as he will in LA.

The top line that got us to game 7 in 2004: Gelinas-Conroy-Iginla.

If Sutter is the new coach and even if he only lasts one or two seasons and he accomplishes this, he will have done the Kings a great service over the long haul.

As a Sharks fan

As a Sharks fan my impression is that Daryl is one of those coaches that does very well for 2 to 3 years and then the message gets old. As a Sharks fan I would prefer you get a terrible coach so the Sharks could have a chance to stay ahead of you in the next couple of years, but I think Daryl will help you for a couple of years and if Dean were to get lucky and a coach that is good for the long haul comes up he should jump on it even if Daryl is doing well...but only during the off season.
P.S. By the way the one thing that teed me off about Daryl was he believed that you shouldn't practice the power-play because you became too predictable for the opposition. That was ridiculous with the Sharks pre-Thornton because our guys weren't vets who knew what to do on the PP and how to adjust. I suppose if you had a team like the 80's Oilers maybe there is some upside to not practicing the PP.

You have got to be kidding me! If Sutter is indeed the next coach then I'm all for getting rid of Lombardi. I've been a supportive of him but this clown Sutter has done jack!
