They could have bought out Forbort and Reilly first and given themselves more space
right there. Why wasn't that done?
I think Sweeney has a plan and more than likely these moves are all mapped out. Should be an interesting week, with Ullmark full NMC clause turns into a 16 no-trade list on July 1st. Im guessing Grizz is gone on a draft day deal as far as forbort I think he has value around the league not much, but there's value there where I don't believe they would have to buy him out. But if either one happens the Bruins would be getting real thin on left-side defenseman. That would be Grizz, Forbort and Orlov all gone from last year.

Neither I value the cap space, this team is on a downturn due to age, gathering cap space and draft picks is paramount. Once Bergeron, Krejci and Marchand are gone which closer than people want to believe they will probably need the cap space to gather a new number 1 center and possibly poach a young star from another cap strapped team.

I don’t care if they make the playoffs or not next season, I want to see cap space, hold onto draft picks, and see if any of our current cropped prospects can fill in holes.

That ship has sailed.

Hell baby
This doesn’t have to be about Bertuzzi. It could be part of trying to make space for another center. Try to get both Lindholm and Dubois, for example.
Yeah the way I see it they needed that cap relief to do pretty much anything, it’s not necessarily for Bertuzzi

Yeah it’s exactly how it works. Poach a good player for nothing because that team is in cap hell. They dictated the terms.

They go an sign Bert for the same amount they’ll end up right again selling players at prices the other team wants because of no leverage.

To me not getting a draft pick is because Sweeney’s eyes are set on Bertuzzi before UFA starts. Most GMs will gamble the same and not give up good assets for the other two
Cap hell, see Vegas giving away Paciorety for future considerations.

While not optimal, Bruins could have kept Hall, and still had money to ice a team missing pieces, but they weren't in "hell" yet.

While I understand they weren't getting a premium, a team lacking any substantial picks could have even had mid picks thrown in?

I question Sweeneys asset management overall, and while I understand this (or similar moves) needed to be made, and this isn't the first time.

Happy for Fliggy. Chicago needs to hit the floor and if anyone deserves that atrocious overpayment, its him.

It’s at least not “dead money” as he’ll be a fantastic mentor for their young guys. Would love to see him involved in the Bruins org in some fashion once his playing days are over if that’s what he wants.

Nah, Marchand would still rack up the points with Coyle, with Nosek.

Hall was a dud in the two previous playoffs IMO. He did play well this year. Bertuzzi also played well, I'd say he was our MVP and given the choice between 32 year old Hall and 28 year old Bertuzzi, I'll take Bert.
But Hall had only 2 years left at 6M$.
Bertuzzi is probably looking at his big long term contract, and I don't blame him. I think that contract won't age well.

Purely a cap casualty and I don’t hate it. Clear $6MM of space for a skilled but aging winger. He definitely always showed effort but production was not where it needed to be for the price. Everyone is always bitching and moaning about Coyle but he produced at a similar rate as Hall and for less money.
Maybe Coyle produced because of Hall.

It's hard to image Sweeney does this move if a deal in principal with Bertuzzi is not in place.

I thought Hall could return a 2nd and 4th. The return we got probably has the value of a 3rd round pick. So I was off a bit there, but not too much. Also, we address a need at RD. This probably means Cliffy walks. I think the Bruins had their eye on Regula, who was fairly highly regarded in his draft year. Maybe our next McQuaid.

If moving Hall gets us Bertuzzi and a McQuaid clone, its a win.
But no cap space then!

Good on Nick. Clearly his current output is not remotely worth $4 mil but Chicago are in a position where they can offer these sort of contracts and the money couldn't have gone to a nicer fellow. Hope he enjoys his time there.

In a vacuum, I prefer Hall, but I can understand why some would rather have Bertuzzi.
But overall, it seems to me that they are pretty much even.

The main reason is that the 2 years left on Hall's contract give (well gave) you flexibility.
And that flexibility is important, because this team sooner rather than later will need a #1 center.
Bertuzzi with a 7 year contract will be immovable.

From now on, and for a few years, I would only give that kind of commitment to #1 center.
