Okay agree to disagree. Players fail all the time, sure, but Petey has been failing consistently so he has no benefit of the doubt, he needs to make things happen. It was a lazy, worthless stick check that failed as was his worthless back check on the EN goal. Blaming a player isn't me trying to take away from our shit management, they are all to blame, they are all shit.

Screenshots do nothing for an argument either. It shows that he was close but close isn't cutting it and it doesn't show the full context of the play. These are just low expectations and excuses. He was 0/2 while trying to stop a goal while being the last man back

This isn’t an agree to disagree moment to me. You’re wrong to put any blame on Pettersson on that play. It’s that simple. It’s not often you can lay 100% blame on a play but in this case you can and it belongs on Pearson. There are maybe two players on the team that truly prevent Nyquist from getting in on that play. Hughes and maybe Garland. Neither was on the ice.

And again good or bad there is no point judging players at this point. Not until the mess up top is dealt with. Perhaps it’ll never be dealt with and we’ll just watch good player after good player leave the team and excel elsewhere. I sure hope that doesn’t happen but suspect it might.

Well don't judge Pearson either since it's not his fault, the mess up top isn't dealt with.

Players are allowed to quit on plays until we have new management, that's what you're telling me right now. The kid is milking the fans for 20+ million dollars, I expect effort every night.

You don't want to agree to disagree, fine. It was a worthless attempt at a stick check, the guy was right there and he let him get by, he lost the battle and we got scored on. It's mainly Pearson's fault it doesn't take a genius to notice that but it doesn't take away from Petterson's worthless play either.

No one should even look in Petterssons direction in terms of "being the problem" until everyone up front is cleaned out. I dont care how bad he's playing or how little effort he's giving, if you dont bet on him and instead point at him instead of management/coaching you're insane

Jesus. . Yea ok, free pass for the guy who said he wants to win and spends the start of the last 2 seasons giving minimal ( if that ) effort and pouting all over the ice

He’s showing a dismal lack of character and zero respect to his teammates. “It’s ok Petey, Benning and Green are idiots so you don’t have to try anymore”

There’s a difference. Pearson made a mistake so yes it was his fault. I’m not judging his attitude or his effort or anything like that. I’m not laying blame for the overall mess on the players and pretending that they are the issue even if they aren’t playing well. They aren’t playing well. Pettersson has been bad.

Yes he needs to be better but I’m not expecting much of anything given the circus this has become. And that circus has been ongoing for about a year now from the treatment of outgoing players, the hanging the coaching staff and players out on Covid, from not prioritizing important contracts, having your two best d-men either ask fir a trade or reject a contract and head to free agency (and yes they were the best two d-men), from waiving a system player despite that player doing everything to improve that was asked of him, riding the likes of Petan and Chiasson in the pre-season, signing Chiasson in the first place, making him a fixture on the PP. When you go through the list in just a year of the demonstrated lack of organization leadership and accountability within the management and coaching staff this type of shit shouldn’t be a shock. Let alone 7+ years of this crap.

People give Garland a pass because he spins a few times a game but since the opening road trip his 5 or 6 points in 15 games also isn’t cutting it nor is his overall effort to be honest (he has a couple games in that stretch but his consistency is non-existent). Horvat, Boeser same thing…generally poor efforts. When you have multiple players checked out every single game like this the issues lay elsewhere in all likelihood.

The issue is that, sadly, some shouldn’t be in the NHL or shouldn’t be getting the ice they get etc. That’s not their fault. Those are GM and coach issues.

Overall, what we are seeing is what you see when management and/or coaching has lost the room.

However through all that Pettersson’s attempt on that play was just fine. He got beat. It happens. There was no effort issue on that play.

It's apparent that Elias Pettersson is no longer having fun playing hockey here in Vancouver. Whether it's the coach, upper management, locker room issues, injury issues, or just the depression from flat out losing, it appears that Pettersson lost all of his joy for hockey. The smug smile which you would always see, the cockiness after scoring a beauty, the confidence to pull off a McDavid like deke. It's all gone. I'm sorry but the Alien has definitely left Pettersson's body, and left us with a spoiled little brat, who thinks he is better than the team. Think what you want, but there is absolutely no excuse for this lackluster effort after renewing your contract to make you the highest paid forward on the team. Pettersson was supposed to be your number one franchise center, but he has the mentality of a support player. He mentioned in the off-season on how he just wants to play for a winning team, which is fine to say, but when you sit out of camp waiting to get your contract renewed, and come back even weaker than the previous year. That is unacceptable. I swear Pettersson barely hit the gym in the off-season, he is noticeably weaker on his skates. Falling down from a gust of wind, constantly. I don't even think he lifted the iron in the off-season to fill out his lanky frame, and strengthen his weaknesses. This all has been very disappointing. I'm sorry maybe I'm used to watching old school players. The Yzerman's and Sakic's have played for some brutal teams early on in their careers, but both managed to lead their respective teams, and continue to rip it up on the scoresheet. Playing for bottom feeders, but being among the top of the scoring leaders on a yearly basis. They always put in full effort and always seemed to get better. They are true leaders. I know it's not fair to compare Petey to these all-time greats, but they just had a different way of thinking. They made sure that they got better by training hard in the off-season, and they lead by example. Pettersson says he wants to win, but looks like he's done nothing to improve his game in the off-season. It's disappointing. Almost seems like he thinks he doesn't need to improve but the team does. Thinking more like a passenger player than a franchise center.
Anyways I really hope Pettersson can turn his game around. I know he still has it in him, I just don't know forsure if it's for our team. I could see him ripping it up again elsewhere. I feel like he's given up, and I think he's dogging it. Which would be totally selfish, if it were to be true. Hopefully things change because this Pettersson does not look good on all accounts.

He's been so mediocre/bad for a while now that I forgot his nickname was Alien.

Hope you were being sarcastic
To me, EP has quit on these buffoons and I don’t blame him, not everyone would choose blind loyalty over what makes the most sense

You can't sign a 7.3 million dollar contract and quit on the team. The dude literally blows chunks this year, maybe he's planning his forehead modeling career or something now.

I remember in some interview that EP said he wanted to be among the best players in the world, and then last off season he says he wants play for a winning team. Now I might be reading too far into this but to me that sounds like went from wanting to be the guy to lead his team to wins, to being a guy that is a passenger on a team that wins. So far this season he is a passenger on a team that loses.

You believed this to be true because you thought he was washed, I remember reading a bunch of invectives from you about him. In fact, you and I argued on the point of Edler at the time.

I don't need to be walked through the salary cap or 'opportunity cost', christ this is like a philosophy 100 student deciding they need to explain the world to everyone they know.

Yes, I was very worried about Edler being washed. This is not some sort of 'gotcha'. I've discussed this endlessly for the last 8 years, and explained where my thought process came from that turned out wrong. We had just watched Keith Ballard crater in the 10-11 season after an injury, could have traded him in the summer of 2011, and then went back to him and got stuck with a negative-value albatross. Edler's situation in 2014 reminded me of that situation and I thought the best option would be to get out of that contract and re-invest it in another defender who was trending better. And this was not a controversial opinion at the time. Again, if Edler had been a UFA in 2014 probably 70-80% of this board would have been against re-signing him.

And what I learned from that was that I probably underrated the impact a bad situation can have on a player. And this is why, in a similar situation in 2021, I'm adamant that you don't trade a Pettersson until you fix the GM/coach disaster and see how he performs refreshed in a refreshed situation.

That you continue to go back 8 years for this is ... weird. Everyone here has projected players wrong, including Edler. Most of this board wanted to take a 2nd rounder for Kesler. Sedin Sisters stuff went on for years. People called Tanev a 'skinny #5 with no shot' and were still doing so when he was obviously an elite top-pairing shutdown defender.

The only reason my opinion was controversial was the 'WAIVERS!' thing. And the waivers thing was only because most of the people on this board were trying to trade Edler while I was trying to explain that he would not waive his NTC so trading him was impossible, and this was the only way around it. And this was 100% correct. And if you're still trying to pull the 'LOL YOU WANTED TO WAIVE EDLER!' thing as though I was saying that Edler=current Brad Hunt, you are either a) trolling by deliberately misrepresenting my argument or b) showing zero understanding of the argument that was being made.

You can’t support the tank and bash Petey at the same time. It doesn’t work.

Of course you can, we need the tank to find a new 1C.
No you can’t.

This tank is for organizational change which can’t happen without Ls which can’t happen if Petey starts playing like Petey of old.

What are you talking about finding a new 1C?

Anyone who thinks EP is constantly...
- falling down
- fumbling the puck
- holding onto the puck while his space disappears
- not skating
...in order to cause organizational change is insane. And, if they happen to actually be right, that's every more reason to move on. A player doesn't get to sabotage the team because things aren't happening according to their personal plan.

So you support this management team then.

Thats good to know.

I don't support the management. I also don't support a player sabotaging the team, as per your implication.

Just think about what you're saying. You're admitting that his play is so bad that sabotage is the only rational conclusion.

I'm not admitting shit.

I'm concluding that our 1C and 2C are giving the FO the finger.

Keep supporting Jimbo though and make sure you vote properly in the next poll.

Never supported him, but keep pretending like EP will turn things around when there's a different GM sitting hundreds of feet away from the ice.

You don't really support the tank then.

And you actually do support our FO and believe that they are people that are worth playing hard for.

Ok then.

He wasn’t a problem when he joined the org.

It's obvious the team structure has hurt our players, that's management's fault but it doesn't give Petterson an excuse to look and play weak af on the ice. If Petey doesn't progress we are screwed. He's not going to single handedly carry this team into the playoffs and save gmjbs job. Relax

Organizational change is the objective.

To achieve this objective, our key core players need to look as shitty as possible.

Looking as shitty as possible tanks the value of the sports entertainment product the Aquilini Investment Group is producing.

A shitty looking product means no revenue for the owner dbags.

Petey and Bo need to keep sucking at all costs.

I would lose complete respect for this player if he actually 'quit' on his teammates, because he didn't like some organizational decisions..

Having said that, I don't believe any of that to be true...He's lost his speed, agility and strength...and confidence...Currently, his game is in a shambles.
