I think people outside of Vancouver fail to recognize what kind of player Pettersson actually is:

- 6'2+ but still under 180lbs. He is lanky with a good reach, but incredibly weak. Tries very hard defensively, and is positionally sound, but is not especially effective when push comes to shove.

- Still quite young and not particularly mature on or off the ice. Extremely cocky, and is used to being the best (Golden God in Sweden), appears to get frustrated quickly when the bounces aren't going his way.

- Good foot speed and is capable of breaking away from defenders when served up a delicious break-out pass (has scored some beautiful breakaway goals), but otherwise does not play with speed when carrying the puck. His zone entries are downright frustrating.

- Unbelievable release. I've been attacked for this opinion, but I genuinely believe his shot is top 10 in the league. Deadly accuracy, can score on any goaltender from the hashmarks in.

- Nifty Sedin-like bank passes, and good overall on-ice vision. But he is not some Backstrom-esque puck distributor. Petey is almost miscast as a playmaker, he is not as good at this as some like to think. Goal scoring is more his forte.

- Absolutely insane puck handling ability in close to the net, but is not as good at deking through players as most think (with those early Datsyuk comparisons). His long reach means he can easily drag the puck through the crease from one side of the net to the other. Goalies don't stand a chance when he's in this position. Unfortunately, he does not have the strength or tenacity to get to the crease very often. When carrying the puck with limited speed like he often does, he's not deking through anybody.

Petey is at his best when he's firing the puck as often as he can. Even though he's been rather disappointing for almost a full NHL season at this point, his career point totals are still relatively impressive simply because of his shot. If you took away his shot, he'd have absolutely nothing.

Like we're seeing right now.

If you think just Pettersson is upset, you are out of your mind. Respectfully.
I don't think it's just Petterson being upset, but I hate it when players dictate who their coaches are by playing way below capability. I don't think firing Green is the wrong decision but allowing players like Petey dictating it is not a good way to run a team.
What's next, you hired a good coach but Petey doesn't like him so you fire the next one too? If Petey want changes, he should play to the best of his abilities and ask for changes behind close doors, don't pout on the ice and give up on your teammates.

He had a slow start last season with only 1 assist in 6 games and after that he had 10 goals and 10 assists in 20 games before he was out. Last season was disappointing but this season is way worse. He’s a liability out there.

I’m starting to believe he needs to be on the wing

Came to say this.

At the very least it'll change things up for him (give him some different looks) and perhaps give him more opportunities to rush the puck up with open ice (2 on 2's with the other winger and whatnot).

Do like Pettersson - Horvat - Garland in a heavily sheltered offensive role and see if it clicks.

I prefer Miller on wing but we can't do both right now. Keep him as a checking C while the EP experiment happens.

The only comparable I can think of is Laine.
Laine seems to have rebound in terms of performance after that “disappointing” 0.5 ppg season.

I refuse to believe his talent just disappeared like space jam. I guess with world class talent there are still growing pains.

His biggest weakness is obviously that he’s a twig. It’s frustrating that he hasn’t gained significantly more muscle. If he played a soft style of game like a Duchene or Marner, that would be one thing, but he plays a style that requires being much stronger on the puck.

And he doesn’t have the speed to make up for his lack of strength. That’s why he looks so dog shit right now.

It's not like he was stronger in his first two seasons.

The difference is he's not a step ahead of defenders like is he when he's on. When he's on, he's darting or deking quick enough that defenders can't catch him to body him.

He plays with no jump, no enthusiasm, and seemingly not full effort. Hockey seems to be a chore for him instead of something he was just naturally better at than everyone and easily showed it with that cocky smile on his face.

He looks like he hasn’t lifted a weight in 2 years

If have watched him from first game in NHL and really paid attention to how he played his first months it is clearly he lost the natural instincts and groove after some injuries his first winter. Never been himself after that. It is in his head.

Apparently he changed his stick to a slightly longer version that is stiffer which is suppose to give his shot more power. I think he should change back. His problem isn't the power of his shot right now.

Is the issue his skating? It seems like injuries and whatever his workout plan is has hindered his acceleration/speed.

He hasn’t trained with his original trainer for the last 2 years.
Not sure why, maybe because of his agent change? obviously covid last year and not this past offseason.

His original trainer is Robert Lygdback
And he is the head strength and conditioning coach for Vaxjo.
I mean his best years were all with him from slaughtering the SHL then his first 2 years in the league.

His brother Magnus is a super famous celebrity trainer who makes celebrities jacked for superhero movies.

Vancouver’s trainers have always been trash.

That's pretty dumb. Longer sticks make it harder to handle the puck.

I wouldn’t say regressed just in a slump. We’ve seen this before twice and both times he’s come out. There’s a lot of crap going in Vancouver right now I’m still not worried about the player. It’s just lack of confidence. People need to chill with the over reactions

And though he can hide his cold gaze and you can shake his hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense your lifestyles are probably comparable:

He simply is not there
I see you've watched the documentary about Pete's daily routine. lol
