Matthews and Nylander are wonderful talents, but they are perimeter players. I do believe you need someone to create space for your skill guys, go to the net, and retrieve pucks. We will see it tonight with Gallagher playing with Pac/JD.

The Leafs just don't have a Gallagher.

This is embarrassingly incorrect. Getting to the net is like Mattews greatest strength.

Good news here is to see Drouin getting back to the lineup. And as one poster aptly pointed out, Drouin should have been playing every game as he hasn't been a regular C at the NHL level before and what better time for the coaching staff let him get comfortable playing the position than these meaningless pre-season games.

It wasn't meant as a diss, the point is you aren't going to be seeing Matthews and Nylander screening the goalie. You want them to be the guys with the puck making the plays. But you need guys at different levels in the o-zone. The problem with the Pac-Drouin-Hemsky line was they were all in line. You need 1 guy on each line who's going to be going in front of the goalie and working behind the goaline. Matthews and Nylander aren't those guys. Hyman does that job for that line. That's why Babcock has him play with them.

Just because you don't screen the goalie doesn't make you a perimeter player. Matthews specifically drives the net consistently. And honeslty, your view of hockey seems to involve a lot more zone placement than is generally advised. I don't disagree with the critique of Pac-Drouin-Hemsky, but that doesn't transfer to Mathews with Nylander and Hyman.

Big game for De la Rose...he's finally getting a shot with NHL players (although Froese is borderline NHL player) tonight.

He doesn't to score, but he has to find a way to stand out, whether that's winning his faceoffs or being active on the PK, he's got to find a way to show the team what he can bring.

Wonder if there's a Montoya-Lindgren battle.....'Cause Juan Pablo hasn't looked good at all.

I would dump Montoya as i've loved everything I've seen from Lindgren. As a bonus they'd save 300k on the cap..mind you, if Bergevin isn't going to use it anyways, there's not much of a point.

I also don't really care if they lose tonight, as long as they play a good game. I'd like to see some players step up their intensity level.

I had thought the Lafleur quote was older- maybe he has been saying it for 20 years,

I can see a MaxPac - Drouin-XXX line as a potentially potent first line. After that lines centered by Plecs and Daneaut, I guess we can hope for a 2A 2B senario but will probably be closer to a 3A/3B . I do think that when healthy they can roll 4 lines with anyone but not sure there will be enough offence.
