Here's the composition of the 1993 team :
Muller 26 years old 357 goals and 959 points in career
Damphousse 24 years old 434 goals and 1205 points in career
Bellows 28 years old 485 goals and 1022 points in career
LeClair 23 years old 406 goals and 819 points in career (in only 967 games played)
Denis Savard 31 years old 473 goals in career 1338 points
Carbonneau 32 years old 260 goals and 663 points in career (as well as one of the best defensive center of all time)
Schneider 23 years old 223 goals and 743 points in career
Desjardins 23 years old 126 goals and 575 points in career
Obviously one of the best goalie of all time
To put things into perspective Koivu 832 career points, Patch has 326 career goals and Markov 572 career points. The 93 team had like 8 players of this caliber with Roy. There was no Mario Lemieux but that top 3 of Bellows, Muller and Damphousse was deadly with Damphousse finishing the playoffs with 23 points in 20 games and the top 2 on defense while young was borderline hall of fame material.
There was many players in that team that were "not good enough for the HoF but as close as you'll ever be". Many players in that team had intangibles too like Carbo being one of the best defensive center ever while being actually quite potent offensively and LeClair who had not reached his potential yet but was already so hard to play against because of his size and how sturdy he was on skate. Many of those guys were kind of dirty at time too.
It was a team that finished with over 100 points back when that milestone meant something, and they did it with Roy not having a good year by his standards.
I think this often gets overshadowed, because while they did have one of the best records in the league, it was only good for 3rd place in the division.
It should be no surprise that when Roy flips his switch, a good team morphs into a serious contender.
The other thing which made it feel surprising at the time was that the defense was unheralded. It's not that it was an average defense, but it was a very young one and those guys were still making a name for themselves.
In retrospect, those young guys all went on to have very long nhl careers outside of Haller.
