Post-Game Talk: Habs blow it against the Islanders in OT

You can always count on Martin McGuire for shady questions. trying to get MSL to blame Hutson for the Isles’ winning goal by suggesting « was it a rookie mistake or … ».

MSL was in no mood for it and answered how « the kid is hungry » and brushed McGuire off.

What a tool McGuire was.

I hope Lane did learn something but end of the day, he’ll do this MANY more times over his career. This is who he is… a puck carrier, a difference maker. You have the puck as often as he does, you have to accept he’ll make mistakes but that’s the trade off for his creativity and aggressive offensive play.

Now, we have to hope these mishaps don’t always end up in the back of our net, but while he will learn from this, he should still play the game he plays.

I disagree. I really hope he will choose his spots better as he progresses (and I am sure he will because he is a smart guy and has already adapted to a lot of situations). He rushed in alone 1v3 and tried to deke his opponent in a low percentage play when he could have simply passed back, kept possession, completed changes and kept going.

It was a dumb play. He's a rookie, it will happen. Hopefully he reads those situations better in the future.

Slaf led the team in both shots (5) and hits (4). He also added one block and you might have noticed his work on Laine goal. Which game have you been watching?
I would hope not many people would agree that he had a good game... not by his recent praise-worthy standards anyway. As with the previous game against OTT, Slaf was once again behind the play too often and at least a few of his recorded hits didn't even recover puck possession, one led to a breakout going the other way. It seemed like he was out of sync again.

A good friend of mine was at the game and told me Slaf was invisible out there... which is hard to do given his size and mobility.

Young player, developing his game, inconsistency... not a surprise.

Exactly. Anyone suggesting (here or in the media/wherever) to neuter Hutson can pound sand.

"He rushed in 1 vs 3"

Did you miss the whole "OT" aspect of it? It was 3 on 3. The 2 vs 1 came up because of a slow read by his linemates.

Creating that kind of chance is always the right play in OT, especially with how quickly he recovered.

It was a dumb play. He's a rookie, it will happen. Hopefully he reads those situations better in the future.
Thankfully, Hutson isn't playing for coaches with this kind of mindset.

The kid is a winner and plays to win. Enjoy it.

If you are playing the blame game for last night, just look at the tough game Monty had.........840 Sv %

Hutson is one of the biggest reasons we have gotten into the Mix !!

I actually agree , everybody is shitting on Monty so hard and i don't get it , we got a point lol , boys could have buried another one of our 50 shots. You'd think we got smoked with some of the comments here lmao let's relax.
You don’t get it? We got a point in no thanks to him. Cayden Primeau could have got a point in that game. He’s getting criticized for being the worst player in an important game, that’s all.

Monty is what he is , a 3 million dollar goalie lol he's given us more than enough juice for what he is. A little rest won't hurt him though

Any decent shot on Monty was going in. Dude was absolutely horrific tonight. We either win it in OT or we were losing because we definitely would have gotten walked in a shootout.

Matheson's worst game in a long time too.
Hutson is just as much at fault for this one as Monty. You’re allowed to say something bad about him you know. Matheson didn’t try to beat every islander on the ice and cause an avoidable odd man rush

Have you noticed some people refuse to accept specific game-by-game commentary?

It took me a long time before I realized the fundamental misalignment here that causes so much disagreement. Some people choose to interpret a specific comment like "Monty was bad tonight" or "Monty was bad on this goal" with a general statement like "Monty is bad" or "Monty shouldn't play again" and then they respond to the general statement instead of the specific one.

Wow. Playing the blame game? I didn't do that. Recognizing a player made a mistake on a play and not deflecting as if it was the best thing since sliced bread is called taking responsibility and learning from it.

Lots of players had tough game. I wouldn't even say Hutson had a tough game, just a tough play.

Hutson had a good game but his rush in OT was poorly conceived -- he didn't gain a good angle for his shot attempt. I agree with others saying this instinct shouldn't be curbed but he's a rookie too so I hope he's learned to pick his spots better and visualize where he need to be for that to work. Onward and upward.

That's true of people beyond the forum ...

We were dogmeat in overtime , god forbid Hutson tried to do it himself. Nice of the forward to not cover for him though , I wouldn't expect anything less from Laine

I mean just watch Laine on the goal , god forbid the guy has to make a single defensive read in his entire life , guess that's too much to ask from him

If there is one thing I’ve learnt, never bet on the Habs to win. Lol.

I often put small bets on O/U’s like shots or points on specific players or I’ll take a stab at O/U on the game totals.
Back in the day I remember people betting small bets against the Habs. Habs win, feels nice; Habs lose, win money.

This one hangs solely on Monty.

Sorokin was stealing the game and you let in two absolute muffins and don't come up with a single save all night.

We know that Monty isn't a work horse, the more games he plays, the worse he gets. We have to make sure we are smart with the amount of games he plays and Dobes has earned starts.

Dobes gotta go on Saturday against the Avalanche. Save Monty for the games against our direct competition and keep him fresh.

Habs in Montembeault's last 9 games: 16 out of 18 points :dunno:
Yeah, he’s been as good as we could hope down the stretch. But he’s still an average goalie and you’re going to get these games. Totally agree with the comments that Dobes needs some games. You can’t ride Monty like we rode Price.

Did you guys notice something though? For the upteenth time we came back from behind in the third period again. How many times did that used to happen? We’d go down a goal or two and then… nothing. We’d lose. That’s not the case anymore.

Down 3-1 in the third and we come away with a point? I’ll take it.

Yep it was a bad play by Hutson, no doubt about it.

I was more talking about the influence on the entire game rather than just the winning goal.
