Habs are the worst defensive team in the league

Habs have a lot of good young players. These stats don’t mean much this early. If they already have won two games with those stats that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

It’s funny cause it’s true.
Hutson is a dynamic young player. The Habs have several such guys. But their coach is not insisting on proper 200 foot hockey. These players are allowed to think only offensive hockey. Imo St. Louis will be replaced during this season with a coach who will insist on proper defensive structure. Some of the Habs will not do well in that new system.

When Mike Matheson and Lane Hutson are two of your top 3 in ice time that’s going to happen.

Both great offensively but not exactly Chara back there at defending their end

Hutson was the only bright spot in an otherwise abysmal team effort tonight. At least he doesn't act as if the puck was a hot potato.

They are a super promising team for sure, but I never quite understood the offseason takes that had them possibly getting into the wildcard mix etc.
Another high pick, a center or d-man, will round out their prospect pool nicely.

MSL is a shit NHL coach. They gotta can him if they want to start to see some improvements. Don't want a losing and playing no defence culture to really settle into a group cause then you're gunna end up like a Buffalo.

Habs fans shouldn’t be surprised. Their team is still in a rebuild and this is good. Another lottery pick or two would be good for this group. They do not want to rush the rebuild like the rangers did. They’ll be much better in the end if they accept it and focus on player development over winning.
The team is young and not expected to be anywhere the top of the league but they were expected to improve and being the worst defensive team in the league by pretty much all metrics is not that. Not ideal for the development either to be hemmed in their own zone all the time. The fans and media have the right to be concerned.

The defense is bad, but looking at the personnel it's not surprising.

Unfortunately likely to be another long season. Rebuilds are not a fun fan experience, but another lottery pick is probably needed.

We stink but Hutson looks good. Habs fans were talking all this smack too about being in the mix lmao why they think our rebuild would be faster than everybody elses confuses me

For some reason all the fans want to rush the rebuild when this is our only chance in like the past 30 years to actually do it properly.

Playing a midget, rookie defenceman, who can't defend 30 minutes a night will do that.
When that guy is your second best dman already and he hasen't even played 10 nhl games there's a problem

The problem lies at the top. Guhle is probably a #2 or #3 (lesser player of top pair or best player of second pair) on his "good" side, but :
- He's very clearly that team's no1 so far
- He's playing on his wrong side.

Everything else snowballs down from there, and there are structure improvements needed.

Hutson should be the last guy to blame for their bad possession stats. He actually has the best xGA/60 of any Gabs defenseman:

These advanced stats are pretty meaningless in small sample sizes.
