Honestly they are bad defensively but the forward are not better in their zone, I don't entirely blame the dmen on that. They are also trying to find a dman to fit with Hutson since Savard is finally not the right partner for him, he is way too slow. Struble coming back and Xhekaj or Barron out of the lineup might stabilize the D a bit

That's not good. That means they'll be sellers. Hide yo 1st round picks.
Promise you, it'll be like halloween never ended. 2025 trade deadline batch includes Dvorak and Savard but we'll add Matheson in hundreds of armchair GM threads. Dvorak is your plug and play 3C with faceoffs and intangibles and Matheson can run contender's PP2. Shutdown Savard brining his Stanley Cup winning pedigree. It's going to cost you and won't be worth it, but it's happening.

Anyone surprised? Goaltending kept them close in most games.
Coach is letting the players cheat the game. Great Habs teams of the past never had players who cheated like the guys they have do now. It’s sad seeing the cheating to score, at the sacrifice of defending, happening. It’s like the guys wearing those iconic sweaters don’t care.

The have a weak coaching staff. MSL is in over his head. They run around like chickens with their heads cut off in their own zone because they have zero structure.

Of course they are, I mean what did you expect with the HC they hired. He’s an offensive player & coach and a cheerleader. He’s the coach for right now with this group, they’re young, developing but far from a contender. They won’t have the same coach in 4-5 years, he will be long gone.

Habs have a lot of good young players. These stats don’t mean much this early. If they already have won two games with those stats that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

It’s funny cause it’s true.
Hutson is a dynamic young player. The Habs have several such guys. But their coach is not insisting on proper 200 foot hockey. These players are allowed to think only offensive hockey. Imo St. Louis will be replaced during this season with a coach who will insist on proper defensive structure. Some of the Habs will not do well in that new system.

When Mike Matheson and Lane Hutson are two of your top 3 in ice time that’s going to happen.

Both great offensively but not exactly Chara back there at defending their end

Hutson was the only bright spot in an otherwise abysmal team effort tonight. At least he doesn't act as if the puck was a hot potato.

They are a super promising team for sure, but I never quite understood the offseason takes that had them possibly getting into the wildcard mix etc.
Another high pick, a center or d-man, will round out their prospect pool nicely.
