2014-Poirier 1st pick, 2015-Hawel 1st pick, 2016-Gogolev & Lalonde-1st picks ... suddenly lots of extra picks to use for acquiring players to go on a long playoff run. It doesn’t matter where where the players of a contender were picked/traded as long as the team gets better, right?

It's common knowledge that there were a few draft years that the Storm did quite poorly. They are no SSM in that regard. I am awaiting the deadline like a kid on Christmas though. I want to see what these pick a turn into.

I keep seeing that the Storm will be buyers and the only justification I have seen is that they will be buyers because "they are an older group" They then go out and trade their 1st round selection (1st overall pick) from 2016. Their 1st round selection (2nd overall pick) from 2017 and their 2nd round pick from 2017. The net result is that they did not address any of the teams needs in those trades. Not only can I not ever remember the Storm trading this type of asset capital in such a short period of time but the return is EMBARRASSING. Whether it been poor drafting or lack of development Mr. Burnett is responsible for both areas.

We now have a team that is not any closer to being a contender and is set up to be at the bottom of the league again next year.

The player resource mismanagement in Guelph is atrocious. An OHL team essentially needs to hit on 5 decent players per year; which you depend on from priority selection rounds 1-5.
Once the 2015 draft year leaves (only Ratcliffe and Schnarr were round 1-5 Storm picks), Hillis and Wooley are the only veterans that were expected from the high end of the draft.
2 players from the top 5 rounds of 2016 and 2017 is not good enough. Gogolev and Poirier are the only returns from the player trades.
Despite years of poor seasons following 2014, this team is set up to once again bottom out and hope that there is some true depth in their 2018 draft picks.

You can thank the former GM, Grandpa Kelly for most of this mess! Failure to sell the stars after their championship and drafting these knuckleheads that Curious George now has to move. We will see how Burnett makes out but his draft class starts with Chayka, Terry, Collins (2018).

I think the Storm have added a few high picks from the trades they most recently have made for a reason (NB 2'nd/20, NB 2'nd/22, PBO 2'nd/19, WSR 3'rd/21, MISS 2'nd/20, GUE 3'rd/21, SBY 3'rd/22). They have positioned themselves for a big splash before the deadline. It would seem that Hamilton is not the team they will be trading with for the "big pieces". There are a few other teams that might deal off their top players but to me it looks like this is setting up a big trade with the Owen Sound Attack. Interesting times, ahead of the trade deadline.

I was referring to the team's ability to scout and develop players. If you take the players mentioned:

Poirier cannot be hanging his reputation on being a 1st round pick. Poirier (1998, 17 points last year) was acquired with Shoemaker (1997, 10 points) in exchange for Burghart (1998, 71 points) and Moncada (2000, 24 points). Seems like a negative result for Guelph just to get a shutdown OA D.

Hawel was the only player recouped from assets that played the 2014 championship. Good move.

Lalonde was traded for picks after Sudbury was willing to move him for a return that exceeded his value. He can be solid, but is not dominant fitting the second overall pick.

Gogolev was a trade of 1st round picks that Guelph lost on hockey ability. I hope that the addition by subtraction of Merkley with Gogolev is a positive for the club.

I still think you need to hit on your top picks, find some rough diamonds in the late rounds and then pay the price for rentals when the situation is right.

Lot of highly drafted players leaving for picks. As has been said, would have been nice to grab a player or two.

And enough of the team being so shorthanded. I know injuries happen, and sickness can't be predicted, but c'mon......a team with Championshiop aspirations can't be dressing a bunch of call-ups every night. Fans pay for these games......there's no discount when the team decides to ice an incomplete team. Get it together GMGB.

Looking at those drafts, the 2017 one in particular....wow. Talk about some horrific asset management.

Oh well, gotta go with what we got. Even after those deals, I'm not closer to understanding what exactly the plan is here going forward? Perhaps we'll understand as we get cloder to TDL....the closer we get, the more I'm afraid they're going to go half-assed all in, and then it'll be a wasteland here like it was a couple of years ago.

I hope I'm wrong!

keep picks.. this team will advance on heart.. it is now unfettered by the virus.. pick wisely next year and keep the right guys... play hard working and talented young ones into a new weave next year... dump the GM/GB..coach.... except for heart... this 3 year cycle is finished.

You may be onto something.Fred Wallace mentioned in his morning commentary, one of 6 suitors with the Attack was an 'unusual' trading partner.
It's no secret the Attack need 2nd Rd picks in 19, 20, 21, as well as 3rds.

They'd also need a couple 16 or 17 yr olds back for the likes of 18, 37, 5, and 16.

So what cha got ??

Not much. In fact, only 2 players that fit the bill. But apparently we aren't allowed to mention Chayka around here. So what would you trade for Woolley?

as well...poor coaching mgmnt. and the virus all contributed ..our recent 'departures were not just something that are unconnected to each other and a malaise easily discernible over last year or two..the bug though is still in the team upper echelons..I believe some agents will still be cool on having their clients sign here.

there's NO guarantee that adding any hot shot new to team for our future will make any diff at all...the playoffs as they say are a brand new start..HEART often goes very far .. I see heart now on this team.

oh ;... we'll consider Chayka maybe... for your next 2 first round picks and your first born..S'ok?...

Neither Wooley nor Chayka should be included in any deal. Both are potential high end players and to let them go on a maybe would not only be foolish, but borderline insane. "Do not touch"

As per Tony Saxon's tweet
"There are at least five players on the Hamilton Bulldogs right now that are exactly what the Guelph Storm needs. The fact that they couldn't get one of them in return for a former second overall pick is very disappointing."

Says it all.

I’ll reserve judgment until I see what was acquired is traded for by the deadline

If the answer is nothing or next to it I’m in complete agreement

For what it’s worth with a couple adds the Storm are my dark horse pick in the West.
I like the team and I’m not sure they’ve achieved their potential.

The problem is there are many fans who think this team won't be able to achieve potential because of who's coaching.

Yeah, as a Hamilton fan, I will echo this. I was less then impressed with Burnett in Hamilton and he didn't exactly do Flint any favours either. He played this bizarre puck possession style, which lead to a lot of back passes, and a lot of awkward turnovers.

Anyways, looks like next weekend we got a home/away tilt. Anyone making the trips?

I’m planning on attending both games. I like coming to Hamilton to watch a game. I’m always a sucker for a bag of those tiny donuts.

It should be an interesting game with Bertuzzi playing his former club back to back.

i remember when Gary Roberts was added to the Platers... that was an exceptional player to a fantastically well coached team..with a system that was outstanding..-these attributes are all but invisible on this team.. they may advance on heart alone .. nothing else.

You will need your own thread after Burnett trades away the 9 extra 2nds & 3rds through 2022; maybe more, and Chayka too
