Canucks were rumoured to be interested in Dawson Mercer. He's pretty much fully converted to wing, though. Then again, given the way Miller's played at centre their might not be much of a drop off. There's lots of interesting pieces in New Jersey and they can part with them without losing out.

Underrated aspect is what Dhaliwal said, Rangers don't want the Devils to get Miller. All it takes for a bidding war is another team.

I would bet the Canucks over the field. And I think management and perhaps more importantly ownership would, too, therefore I don't see punting as a realistic option despite it likely being the wisest course of action. I think they'll stick with their plan of continuing to add/improve with every transaction and hope for the best.
Ahh the ignorance of youth...

Oh wait that was less than 2 days ago.

Alright time to scorch the earth. :(

Yeah, I was thinking a package around Mercer and Nemec would be appealing. Canucks wanted a C apparently, which Mercer has played - wonder if he could go back to it in the right circumstance.

As for the Rangers - I just don't think they want to part with the things that the Canucks would be interested in.

Main thing is the Devils just need to think the Rangers are a threat. Mercer and Nemec would be a crazy overpay compared to past trades. At least based on value. Certainly seems like there's some momentum at least. Only other team that's been reported as seriously interested was the Rangers.

Mercer also makes sense because:

1. He's young and signed for a couple more years at a decent cap hit $4M
2. Mostly plays W now (and thankfully LW which is a need) but started as a C.
3. Has a ton of speed.
4. Does not have a NMC or NTC

Many other players NJ has have clauses that could block a trade.

If you get Mercer and Nemec for Miller that's a great deal IMO.

Which reminds me, it's probably time to move Miller to wing anyway?

I don't really see what the point of him playing center anymore is. His defensive game has completely fallen off and half the time when they are defending in zone it looks like he's desperately trying to rotate to defend the point forcing one of his wingers to cover down low.

Putting him on wing likely means more touches with the puck down low in the o zone as well.

This talk of the NJ Devils..
  1. Quinn Hughes is sick of Miller's attitude.
  2. Miller traded to the NJ Devils.
  3. Miller feuds with Hughes bros.
  4. Canucks collect all of the Hughes triplets.
  5. Cup.
I’m sold. Send Miller for a 7th.

Main quote listed:
  • There’s chatter out there that New Jersey and Vancouver have discussed a trade involving J.T. Miller. Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald was on SN The Fan 590 on Thursday and poured cold water on the rumours. “Patrik (Allvin, Caucks GM) and I are really good friends. Quite honestly, we haven’t talked,” he said.
Edit: Just point out that the quote says Thursday, and today is Friday, so obviously things could have changed today.

i don't think mercer is likely to be available in a deal for miller and i'm not sold on nemec as a future impact player either but maybe there's a deal to be made around meier? he's got a similar contract to miller but fits better on this roster both position wise and age wise. maybe the canucks could talk the devils into including casey or silayev in the deal too

Having the Jiricek trade as a recent comparable helps with valuing Nemec. I would have had Jiricek roughly on par with Nemec before this season, probably now a bit behind.

Based on that, Nemec for Miller straight up feels comparable to what the Rangers were offering a couple years ago. The Canucks taking on a cap dump like Palat as well seems like it would be fair.

Meier is NJ's version of Zibby.

No thanks.

The team has been linked to Dawson Mercer in the past too, but I’m not sure how you even that out.

Mercer and Palat for Miller + 2MM player (Heinen/Desharnais) is dead even money-wise. Maybe you can retain Palat to 4MM x 2 and flip for a pick at the deadline too if you dont think he fits into the plans.

Problem with Mercer is really just that he does not project as a C long term.

I want a defenseman from NJ.
