Grub's Canucks & NHL News, Rumours, and & Fantasy GM | Roll with the Changes

how are you going to turn the guy who sucks defensively into a shutdown C? it might be easier to turn Desharanis into a PP QB.

I dont' think he sucks defensively.

I think he's cheating for offense because he signed a 7mil+ per year deal after scoring 30 goals/60 points.

He's skill set is perfect to be a shutdown C.

What's going on with Power/Byram? Seems like two guys Sabres fans should be defending with their lives in trade talks (as every fanbase does with their prospects) yet they seem perfectly happy to part with either one, and maybe even both.

I know Byram has the concussion concerns but Power seems like a guy they should want to keep? What gives?

I don't know much about it, but Power seems to be struggling a lot this season. So I think they're sort of in the same situation we are with Pettersson. Although, in their case, it's more they need to give something up to improve their forward depth and defense is their strongest position.

Because we have an overabundance of PMD LDs in the top 4. They all have their pros and cons, but I think Power is definitely worth more around the league right now. We just need to rebuild our defense a little by trading one of Power/Byram (not even necessary in a deal with you guys) and adding two top 4 defenders that play good defense and PK, something like that.

Probably highest upside prospect/young player on Buffalo is between Kulich( whos already producing some in the NHL) and Helenius

If you can get one of them + Cozens and Byram, I would consider that even if I'm a Petey fan.

I'm down to trade Pete to Buffalo only because everytime they trade young players they turn into a star the next team they are on.

Believe it or not Pete has insane value. We could get a haul. And considering Miller seems to lack any value I wonder if moving Pete is the way to go.
Well even if we move Pettersson, Miller is still being moved as it’s rumoured he wants out now.

Thanks - I am seeing some criticism of Power from Sabres fans online (here, reddit). Is he actually playing poorly or just not meeting the expectations of a 1OA making a top pairing salary?

Buffalo tells you to never call them again and has switched numbers. If you want Power, the deal that they'd do is probably Power + McLeod. Hell maybe they feel generous and toss ya a 2nd.

I'd do that deal. I'd want a small add from Vancouver but I could definitely work around something like that.

Me too, to be honest.
Unfortunately, they’d need to fire Tochett immediately which we know they won’t do, because management absolutely needs to figure out whether Pettersson can be our franchise centre moving forward by July 1st when his trade protection kicks in. If Tochett is fired today, we get like a half season to see Petey under a different coach which may not even be enough.

Byram, imo

While Power has the higher potential, paying 8.3M for a guy forever stuck behind Hughes seems like a waste. I'm also not entirely convinced Byram would surpass him.
I think arguments can be made for both guys...Power would probably be a better "match up" guy who you could throw out there to try and contain larger forwards and not put that wear on QH...Byram adds a level of redundancy and can man a 2nd unit and could step up in the event QH ever gets injured (heaven forbid)...I'd be pretty stoked for either of them.

I'd consider Cozens in a JT Miller deal but not for Petey. Put Cozens on the right wing as a Boeser replacement. Move Boeser and Suter to NJ for Nemec. Target Hague from VGK at the deadline or off season. That gets the D close to fully rebuilt. We are still down a center obviously, but have a younger foundation in place.

On Nemec - NJ's position on not trading him falls apart pretty quick as the holes in their team have become apparent.

If Petey is dealt, I'd laser focus on McTavish or Carlsson from Anaheim.

The only issue I have with dealing Petey is I have a really hard time figuring out how this team ever gets to contention if both him & Miller are gone. There is legitimately nothing within the organization that projects out beyond a 3rd line center.

That's not me defending Petey, as he somehow went from 100 point superstar into a huge ???, but if you deal both him & Miller without getting a future 1C back, you're likely delaying the inevitable of dealing Hughes in two years no matter how much you shore up the blueline as a result.

At least with Petey, there is a path to get there, however unlikely it may be.

Yeah you basically summed it up. We simply can't replace both our top 2 centers.

You have to keep one.

He is not deserving of his contract yet. He is supremely talented offensively but currently he is struggling defensively. He is going to put up a lot of points in this league. I think at best defensively he can be an average defender.

We do have to move one of Power or Byram and I think Power probably has more value around league because of his potential.

The main criticism of Power is his passivity in some moments in defense and lack of physicality, he is a very soft player for now, and quite often this becomes a problem near our net, when he cannot even push away the opponent's small forward. On the other hand, he is still young, he has never seen a stable and good partner near him in the NHL, he moves the puck well and in general his game in creation is good.

Byram was also pretty decent for us and he seems to be a more versatile and less soft player than Power. I don't even have a preference for which one I want to trade, there are risks in both cases.

if the 1st rounder is unprotected, I'd make that trade all day long.

I wouldn't because I think that deal instantly makes Buffalo a much, much better team and that 1st rounder probably ends up around the 10th overall pick, and we're not getting anywhere close to a Pettersson replacement with the 10th pick.

Cozens has legitimately 0 value after how last season and this have gone; he only has 1 good season in his career, Byram is nice but his upside is probably a #2 at this point - I'm not dealing my center that's a year removed from putting up 90 points while being elite defensively for that garbage package.

If I am the Canucks I want one of Power or Thompson, but Buffalo is probably pushing Byram and Cousins.

if we’re taking Cozens back we should be pushing for them to retain part of his cap hit, bring his cap hit to 5 million and it’s still a bit of a risk for us to take but makes it easier to do. This, Cozens, Byram 1st seems a bit underwhelming for a Pettersson return, so much risk around both of those players coming back that this could easily blow up in our face.
The odds of Petey bouncing back >>>>>>>>> cozen living up to just his contract worth which is like a high end 2nd center.

Nah.. I wouldn't rely on Power for any matchups ... he is soft.. and doesn't use his size at all. If you get him his worth is going to be transitioning the puck up the ice , breaking down defenses with his skating , his passing and his shot is improving pretty significantly.

yeah I think most people look at Power, who's huge and its easy to assume hes good defensively.

Like you said, I think that's his weakness. He seems to be lethargic in his own zone.

And Byram is only like 1 year older, as a canucks fan, I would rather trade for Byram, and believe that I can get more + from Buffalo

Would you do Helenius/Kulich + Cozens + Byram for Pettersson?
