Grub's Canucks & NHL News, Rumours, and & Fantasy GM | Roll with the Changes

Yep. We should be looking to sell high. No point in keeping players around for feel goods. Revamp the team or if Garland is core design the team to play him in the top 6. Not a $5 mil 5'8" 3rd line checker.
This isn't the Canuck way. We have to wait until his value is at an all time low and need to attach a 3rd just to trade him for a b prospect that can't skate.

Would have been unreal to get that 5 million and Necas for Pettersson.

I wanted Necas in the 2017 draft to begin with. Now he's cheaper and has grown his game more than EP40 without whatever physical and mental issues he has
Okay relax. Necas career PPG is 58 points per season and roughly 22 goals while Pettersson is just under PPG while sucking for the last year. He’s also got the same knocks that Pettersson has physically while being a significantly worse defensive player than him while being highly unreliable center for majority of his career. Necas had a torrid start riding a high shooting percentage, a hot PP, and very favourable matchups but has come back down towards his average recently.

and a 7th

And yet somehow our defense improved while he was here and and has deteriorated since he left...

I think that had way more to do with Cole and the overall team success and mentality. Zadorov is a crap defender either way. Boston fans think he sucks. They're disappointed with what they got and are unhappy with the wasted $$.

It didn't really improve either. We were a better team at the start of the year before we traded for him. He's a decent #5 but he's no where near the level of impact some people make him out to be. At the end of the day he can't keep the puck out of his own net because he's lazy on his skates and in his mind.

The Rantanen trade is an interesting juxtaposition to what the Canucks are doing. They traded a guy out of nowhere, telling nobody on the team they were even considering it, and may have now negatively impacted their room. The Canucks have leaked every single thing possible around their situation, and are trying to move someone to fix their room.

what else is he going to say?

if the team talked to mackinnon about it beforehand there is absolutely no way he is going to admit it.

The only issue I have with dealing Petey is I have a really hard time figuring out how this team ever gets to contention if both him & Miller are gone. There is legitimately nothing within the organization that projects out beyond a 3rd line center.

That's not me defending Petey, as he somehow went from 100 point superstar into a huge ???, but if you deal both him & Miller without getting a future 1C back, you're likely delaying the inevitable of dealing Hughes in two years no matter how much you shore up the blueline as a result.

At least with Petey, there is a path to get there, however unlikely it may be.

Also turns out Ratanen was willing to take a cut to stay. What is the Avs doing

A huge immobile pedestrian that can't be bothered to play defence?
There is no world that exists in which Zadorov is not an impressively mobile skater for his size.

Zadorov is pulling down over 20 min a night, and is a team best +12. The next closest D is a +3, the next closest player is a +6.

He adds a lot of jam and physicality and pulls his team into the fight on many nights. Something that is quite lacking on the Canucks.

Pettersson
Miller
Boeser
Demko

All involved in heated trade discussions. They may change the entire core of the team. Only player the Canucks will not discuss is Q. Hughes, everyone else is available if it makes sense in improving the team, crazy times. A blockbuster trade could go down at any moment.

That's the key though. Impressive for his size is like who cares? This isn't elementary school where we're impressed by his ability to overcome obstacles, it's the NHL where skating and performance matters. Like almost all overly bigger players he struggles with mobility big time. He's extremely lazy in coverage and his endurance is very poor.

If you look at the Boston fans they will tell you the same thing. He is a big feisty player but I'm not convinced his jam and pulling his team into the fight equates to much in terms of winning hockey games though.

I think Pettersson is a great player, but I don’t see him as a guy who will lead us to a cup. Miller is that guy but his age and that we’re regressing makes sense to move him. Hughes is 100% that guy who can lead us to a cup. The thing with Pettersson, management needs to figure out if he’s their guy to build around, if he isn’t you need to move him before his NMC kicks in. We can’t be handcuffed with both him and Miller, we need to do what we can to maximize the return to get back on track asap.

Because sentimentality kills teams. At least Colorado has a Cup already. When you get sentimental and award big contracts to guys that have won nothing, well you get the Canucks.

Colorado knows it would be lunacy to pay Rantanen his worth. They also have to keep in mind the max contract they will award Makar in the future.
