Why did they call this conference? Legitimately saying nothing other than a whole lot of Benning answers with injuries and "if only we were healthy we'd be a playoff team."
feel like it's pretty common practice for this group to face the media when there's increased chatter around the team... rutherford used to do it a ton before he got sick of it lol

Let's ignore the fact we have 2 wins in our last 7 because we have 2 wins.

Transaction-wise they really only made one significant mistake which was allocating money to Heinen/Desharnais instead of a 2nd pairing D (Zadorov or other), and even Heinen has still been perfectly fine value in a vacuum. The Lankinen, Sherwood, Debrusk signings have all been solid to excellent, and Forbort has been good since his return.

The one big mistake they made was calling Miller's absence a 'personal leave' instead of saying it was for an upper-body injury which turned a smoldering internal situation into a total media circus.

I made this was not just significant but a huge reason why this season has been torpedoed thus far. I expressed concerns over the defense last offseason and from what I recall you did as well. So I'd say two big mistakes. The rumoured Miller return hasn't actually happened yet so I guess it's premature to bitch about it but the rumour is...not great. I liked all of the Lankinen, Debrusk, Sherwood and Heinen signings but as you noted the Heinen signing was superfluous. Overall I haven't been particularly impressed by them this year.

Did he just say Forbort is a big part of the team? WTF HES TROLLING US NOW
forbort has played well enough that he looks like soucy last year, which is a bit shocking considering how poorly he started (but knowing what happened with his family, it makes sense)

I mean, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. Someone literally just started a thread here calling them out for being MIA.

I'll take them doing this and being available and giving corporate answers all day every day over Jim Benning hiding (or being hidden) from the media all year and then doing his annual PR disaster.

But what they're doing here is completely tone deaf....there is an apparently huge rift in the dressing room, one of your best and key players is being shopped kind of clumsily and he wants to come talk about the team and the challenges they've faced and making excuses and propping up an underwhelming performance thus far. Whats the point? It's like taking a statement from the Iraqi Foreign Minister.

(lol at the guy posting the Allvin Iraqi Minister pic)

It's just weird that reporters are so deferential.

Just ask the questions. Did Miller almost sit out against Edmonton? Has he asked for a trade?

Oh, absolutely it was a major mistake.

That said, if we had a healthy/performing Demko and Pettersson/Miller performing anywhere near expected levels we'd be comfortably a playoff team with lots of runway to make deadline defensive upgrades.

...and blaming the abbotsford floods when he did do PR.

I think it's more generally their approach to the blue line. Though Forbort has been better, the mix of players and the ones they signed created a bad setup. They seem to think since they have Hughes-Hronek on the top-pair they can just toss whomever out in the bottom four and be generally above average.

Thoughts on the Organization:
-over the course of a year you go through some adversity
-have had a fair amount to endure early on
-coaches have done a really good job with the line-ups
-really good indications in some games like against the Oilers; have been nights where they haven't seen the same
-inconsistency sums it up
-always a test when you have top players out for extended periods of time and elevated ice time for other players

Potential Trades:
-*smiles* not going into any specifics or talks around the league
-always looking to make the team better
-has been tough to evaluate the group they have with all the injuries
-league parity make it hard to make deals at this time of the year
-next couple of weeks will be interesting

This Season:
-references Rutherford saying last season that if everything goes right, they have a playoff team

Ongoing Rumours
-feels bad for players who have to read rumours about themselves
-want to create an environment for players where they feel safe and trusted
-players have galvanized over this

Pettersson:
-Pettersson is well aware of his lack of production and takes ownership
-he's not a finished product yet
-has seen signs that he's playing a solid two-way game
-Allvin is more about the process and playing the right way

Untouchables:
-not going to comment on specific names
-his job is to always listen

Replacing Players:
-extremely difficult to replace a top-6 player
-need to weigh the dollar amounts as well
-his job to explore the options available

Joshua:
-lower body injury
-making progress but isn't participating in a full skate yet
-week-to-week

Boeser:
-Wouldn't say urgent
-still evaluating him
-has a great relationship with his agent
-will make a decision when the time is right
-a contract has to work for both sides
-anything can happen at any day

Evaluating the Team:
-tough to evaluate when you have your top-2 defencemen out
-Miller missed 10 games
-had a stretch where they played well on a November road trip
-never an easy night in the NHL and a lot of teams are still in it

Keeping the Team Focuses:
-gives the players credit for blocking out the noise
-Tocchet did a good job getting his message through to the players and having them focus on the game

Defensive Group:
-with Hronek and Hughes out, it made it a challenge
-there are times where their defence has shut down elite power
-mentions the Maple Leafs and Oilers games
-the defence might be criticized for a lot of things but are extremely capable of defending
-defending is a 5-man unit and need forwards to come back
-it's not just the defence and their overall game hasn't been at the level they need to be consistent

Lack of Shots:
-hard to create goals
-takes pride in the Canucks limiting the Oilers to 15 shots
-fans deserve to see good hockey
-not good enough at home

Goalies:
-Lankinen came in to Vancouver with a great attitude
-wants to see Demko back in the second half

Inconsistency:
-a lot of teams respected the Canucks and are playing them hard every night
-need to be ready and committed every game
-when playing to their identity and as a team, they wear the other team down
-hardest thing in the league is to be consistent
-Tocchet and him have been discussing their inconsistency
-had a lot of players to start the season and that was a challenge
-Forbort is an important piece on the PK
-thought after the first 10 games of the season, took a step back and re-implemented on the basics of their system

Future Moves:
-don't have any target dates
-has been very active in seeing if there are any players they could acquire
-have seen a lot of younger players from Abbotsford
-might be easier closer to the trade deadline to make a move due to cap accrual for them and other teams

Star Players:
-their star players not performing to the level that everyone knows they are capable of
-we all see what these players are capable of when playing at their best
-players are committed to playing here and getting back to their expected level
-still believes they have a good core
-still sees a resilience and a hunger in this group
-winning solves a lot of issues

Miller:
-won't comment
-was really pleased with his performance on Saturday night
-sickness going around in the dressing room with a couple of guys under the weather
-mentions we will see how many players practice today

Tocchet:
-very proud of how Tocchet has handled this season
-relationship and the way they communicate every day is very strong
-believes is a good coach
-sees him here long term
-it's a two-way street
-no urgency since they have a club option but will sit down and discuss his future
