He also said they're still evaluating Boeser, who has been here *checks notes* almost 10 years.

i am going out on a limb that boeser will not sign until the new cap is announced and is probably negotiating for now on a percent of eventual cap basis.

That was a once in a season performance by Miller, and we still barely hung on.

The Oilers of this year would absolutely smash this team in a series. They stayed the same and we got worse.

Recap of Drance's interview with Halford & Brough this morning.

The Trade that Didn’t Happen
  • Couldn’t figure out the trade package or why it fell apart
  • Return was certainly not Alexis Lafreniere and Braden Schneider but more of Filip Chytil and Ryan Lindgren
  • Was suggested to him that the conditions on the 1st round pick might have been a factor in the trade falling apart
Next Steps
  • This organization has reached a point where they don’t think this core can win
  • Have reached a point where they are reaching a more transitional step in their team building
  • About to hit a significant transition in terms of how they view “the project at hand”
  • Organization knows Hughes wants to win and want to win with him
  • Have reached the point where they think they need to reset the core and move forward with just one of Pettersson or Miller
What They Could Get For Miller
  • Tading Miller is impossible to win; example is Bo Horvat
  • Canucks had to make a subsequent deal to make the first trade of Horvat worthwhile; without the Hronek piece the trade is not a win
  • Would need to do a lot of creative work to find themselves in a healthier space in terms of overall talent level
  • Can’t afford to take a step back on the ice
  • Pretty complicated set of circumstances they are navigating
Alexis Lafreniere
  • Incredible player
  • There’s a straight-line, two-way, panache to his game
  • Doesn’t think he was on the table over the weekend
Pettersson
  • His performance this season is a key reason why they aren’t in the same place as last season
Moving Forward
  • Believes there’s a sense the struggles are partially because of a lack of chemistry and can only be fixed by changing the roster
  • Don’t have contenders ceiling without a better defence and more up front
  • If changes happen, we will look back on this as a tremendous shame and missed opportunity
  • Canucks got close enough at winning that they changed Drance’s mind

What does a Miller + (Demko + Boeser @ 50%) retool get you in a package?

Why would a GM take on those three guys when they've seen they can't get it done as a unit?

That is a Benning-level reply...woof.

I don't know why they keep saying "Lafreniere and Schneider" instead of "or."

Asking for one of those players isn't unreasonable. There's no way you'd get both for Miller unless he was at the top of his game and there was no NMC, even then it would be a stretch but a good GM would be able to make that happen.

A decent GM should be able to get one of those players and a draft pick/cap dump for Miller to make the dollars work, particularly because there is another team in the mix.

It doesn't matter what happens, if mgmt truly believes this defense is capable then the team is screwed.

I want to believe they are just saying that to save face, because the alternative of "yeah, it really sucks and it's costing us games", while true, isn't a good PR strategy.

the canucks have the third lowest xGA/60 next to LA and FLA, but have gotten crap goaltending. so yes they can actually defend.

the problem is xGF/60 is 5th worst lol

Demko and Silovs have been horrendous. Lankinen has been steady but isn't a true #1 behind a below average defensive core.

I know plus/minus is a flawed stat, but when it looks like this:

Brannstrom - -4
Desharnais - -6
Forbort - -7
Friedman - -2
Juulsen - -11
Soucy - -11
Tyers - -4

It says you're lying Allvin. Two members of our defense are capable of defending. The only two with a positive symbol next to their name.

Juulsen has 0 points and is -11 in 32 games. Might be the worst player in the entire NHL.

What Team Executives Think:
  • E1: Extremely difficult move and would wait to make a trade
  • E2: Thinks a roster player with a 1st or 2nd round pick unless it’s an elite player coming back
  • E3: If his team were involved they wouldn’t putting their best assets on the table; maybe a younger NHL centre and a pick; impact centre or defencemen will be hard to come by
  • E4: Canucks are up against it and operating from a position of weakness; NMC drops his value; mid-level positional player, a 1st, and prospect
What Agents Think:
  • A1: 1st round pick and a player but depends on the player coming back
  • A2: Won’t be nearly as much as the Canucks would like; age and contract don’t help his value; situation in the room is a big story and killed leverage; getting a couple of decent roster players and a pick or prospect would be enough; need a fresh start in the dressing room
What Scouts Think:
  • S1: Most contending teams would love to add Miller; wonders if the juice is worth the squeeze; return will be much less than people think

Management completely botched this by letting it circulate that Miller's absence was anything more than an undisclosed injury. There would have been a bit of speculation but nothing like what has happened because of them calling it a "personal leave". Adding "I'm proud of JT for seeking help and I believes he's going to be a better person, better teammate and a better player" was pouring gas on the fire.

Allvin needs to do a better job of shutting the f*** up sometimes.

Have to be honest, the shine is really wearing off fast with Rutherford/Allvin. I gave them the benefit of the doubt after how poorly the handled Boudreau's firing and Pearson's injury, especially with our success last season. But between the wasted cap space on guys like Heinen, the dismal defense and this media circus with Miller, it's not a good look.

Allvin can't afford to trade Miller for a "weaker" return or I think the fanbase will turn sour very quickly.
