I actually gave up on the Leafs early in the season when I realized they had got even worse. I actually tuned in today, and it was a lazy effort again. As soon as I saw Skinner start playing hard after that first goal, I knew it was all downhill.
I'd like us to just flat out not make the playoffs this year. Get a nice draft pick, trade Marner. Pray for goaltending.
But this team now? Not a chance, they're running on empty in January. Glad Nylander got his contract.

The Leafs are gross.
They put in the effort, had the start, had the lead and it just went the same way of the Islander game (which at least went to OT), the Colorado game and the Detroit game.
Not a playoff team. Probably should be dismantled.

The team gave it a good effort but the sad truth is the entire team including the core is simply not good enough.
This is the culmination of 7 years of what could have been a good rebuild but instead we end up with this dysfunctional mess.

Nylander has stretches in the season where he is so frustrating to watch in terms of defensive effort. That's fine at 6.9 million, but at 11.5 this shit is going to get old real fast
Thought the 4th line looked good for once, too bad the middle 6 wasn't great overall
This defence is horrendous and requires serious, serious repair. So many stupid decisions

This team just doesn't have it. They have no idea how to play the game while leading, they don't have the pieces on the backend, nor the team defensive systems and structure in place to suffocate you defensively when they have multi-goal leads... And the bigger the situation, the more the "Big 4" shrink into obscurity.
Sell some non-core assets at the deadline, and start the miniature rebuild / re-tool. There are about 8-10 teams that are obviously better than the Leafs this year. No point being buyers at the deadline and trying to compete.
Selling Bertuzzi, Domi, Brodie and Kampf (if you can find a buyer) should net you a decent set of prospects and draft picks, in a system that could use an infusion of young, cheap talent.
If there is a big time, top pairing Defenseman in his prime that you can move Marner for, I'd really consider that too, especially if he's signed for term, under $10 million. I think you're really close to a quality top 4 with...

Defence is f***ing awful, we have one top 4 defencemen in Rielly, 3 bottom pairing in Benoit, McCabe and Liljegern, and then AHL trash. I can't wait for brodie's contract to expire, I hated that signing from the first year, a defencemen needs to have some offensive output, otherwise he's just as bad as an ozone only player like barrie. Gio needs to go to the retirement home, benoit is a bottom pairer
