Out of curiosity, why were the Rangers getting hyped in SI at this moment? It'd been 27 years since they'd won the Cup, and the club wasn't doing that well at the time, were they?
Rod Gilbert's smiling face was on the January 30, 1967, edition of Sports Illustrated, which - presumably - means that the decision to feature him, and - in particular - his team was made some time in December, 1966. The New York Rangers were doing very well that month - winning 9 of 14 games. Between the 7th and the 25th (yes, they played Christmas Day) they won eight of nine. Gilbert was hot himself - in the first half of the 1966-67 season - reaching the 20-goal-mark before anyone else in the NHL. In the second half of the season, he really cooled off - finishing with 28 goals.

Thrilled to be in Detroit, where he played parts of 10 seasons, and made it to the playoffs three times.
