Ever notice how your first and last holes are generally your best? Build up the optimism to begin and then after a solid filling in with a sh*tburger consisting of as many as 16 holes you play a good hole to end just to bring you back again thinking "maybe..."?

Played Hecla twice this weekend. What a gong show. Saturday we had a group of young, athletic kids (two couples dressed in truly hip, stylish golf gear) that wouldn't let anyone play through. Six hours and five minutes for the round. No marshal on the course (and no beer cart, though we knew that ahead of time). Friday's round was better but I think I'm coming around to the notion that too much alcohol (blasphemous, I know) can impair your golf game.
Never, and i mean never birdie the 1st hole, all it does is give you hope.

Played Netley creek yesterday, greens in good shape, fairways were awful and when you can't hit driver on a par 5 because of how tight and how much it turns that's stupid. Hit a perfect drive with a 3 wood and i still ran into the dense bush , found a shit tonne of balls though.

Hanging out in Paris for a few days then its off to Portugal for 4 rounds of golf with 11 other guys. My game is inconsistent which is WAY better than my last three golf trips where I showed up cold (zero balls hit between trips). Hopefully I have a few moments. The trip and guys are always a blast but totally tanking the golf games on the last two trips was a bit of a buzz kill.

Have a good time ps' ...

Remember... you don't make your living golfing... two... it's just a game... three... you're in Portugal... the Tapas... wine, sherry and brandy are all better than your golf game...

Safe drives... safe travels...

I am pretty good at compartmentalizing, If my game tanks I will still have a 9 out of 10 time but if I scatch out some level of respectability it will drive it to a 10 out of 10 experience. I haven’t visited Lisbon since 1987 and Ioved it then so this trip will be a blast. The guys I am traveling with are all good friends so the moment won’t be lost on me.

Back in about 2012 I was low man on one round with this group in Scotland (at the Old Course of all places) and I was always upper middle of the pack but after that I quit golf and fell like a stone to the bottom of the barrel with some robust friendly heckling from the crew so my tiny, fragile little ego wants me to at least claw my way out of the cellar.

Our crowds are distinctly different. We had our "fat bastards" annual tournament up at Hecla this past weekend. Only 15 guys this time, we've been over 25 in the past. Of those 15 guys though nine were from the same junior high and six of them I went to kindergarten with. The caliber of golf was all of the board. The caliber of alcohol consumption was top notch. This was the 29th such "tournament".

Earlier some folks were talking about GolfTec. I had the swing analysis on Monday and it was pretty interesting. It's very interesting to see your swing and track all the different data points, turn, plane angles, etc. The swing evaluation is just to get you in the door so they can sell you the training packages. I'd be interested in taking them, but they're a little pricy.

Actually this sounds errily similar in some respects. my group is welded together through business connections but its the booze business so Molson pays the way and we are all certainly degenerate drinkers.

You are worth it Huff'...

It's a slippery slope... but if women can have shoes... and can indulge in clothes...

We can have golf...

And custom fitted golf clubs...

So not distinctly different...

In the Paris airport and mentioned to my buddy that the lack of obesity is shockingly different than major North American airports.

Just thought I would share this important observation.
When we went to Scotland and Ireland i noticed the same thing. Probably because the lucky bastards can golf all year and not just 5 months like us.

Probably notice fast food restaurants not on every corner too.

I took it. For the most part i enjoy it. It is pricey but you also get to use their bays weekly, which if you commit to it pays for itself. One thing I noticed is you take the swing evaluation and it's about an hour and you think wow this is great. But then your lessons are only 30 mins so you're just getting going and it's "that's it for today".
Also don't like how they want you to get in there weekly for lessons when reality it takes a lot longer to cement a new change in your swing. Another issue I'm having now is trying to get my lessons booked. My instructor has no openings in the next month.

I did really like it at the beginning when I had no clue what I was doing. Now that I have somewhat of a swing I can kinda look and figure out what else I need to do.

Also with the bays they record your swing in two angles which is great. And it was great in spring until it was warm, then i much rather be hitting outside.

The lessons come out to about $100 per lesson but I figure I've been in their practice bays 30-40 times. Golf dome in the winter or even two buckets of balls at a range each time and you'd be looking at close to $1000 In practice time anyway. So it's really not too bad.

I'm still terrible though 🤣

I was just in Ireland a few months back, the best way of spotting another NA tourist was the spare tire. I had the matching michelin gut.
Funny stuff  The other thing you absolutely don't see in Scotland or Ireland is power carts , everyone walks. Here you have 20 year olds taking power carts on courses half the length.
