Finnish version of the famous Raising the flag on Iwo Jima photo

this in finland in a nutshell

a few people trying to communicate without talking, some more defacing a famous monument, a guy in a fedora

Finland is the on the top of the world right now yes but called it self the best hockey nation of the world. That's over-rated.
It wasn't an official declaration from the President of the Republic of Finland. It was a few exhilarated fans on a hockey forum. The allowable hyperbole quota was not exceeded.

You can see how many Finns are here on this board. Finland's games got a lot more posts than any other. It's our biggest passion I guess..

Is there any sports that Finland excellence at other that Ice Hockey ? Based on the news and the celebration, apparently Ice Hockey is the only sport Finns passionate about?

No, not at this level there is nothing that compares with hockey. Most watched, most hobbyists, most players, just the biggest thing sports-wise we have. As much as it's a meme right now, but E-Sports is genuinely probably #2 right now

We used to be good at winter sports, skiing, ski jumping, but that's all behind us now. I guess we're alright in F1 still if you count that as sports and it's fairly watched, but that's like 2 guys being good.

Do you believe in Suomiracles?
Considering "suo" = swamp [no connection to "suomi"], I wonder if your etymological revelation is indicative of the origin/habitat of the mythical bogeyman ("morko"); also consider the phonetical proximity of "miracle" and "morokolli" which in turn is a diminutive derivative of "morko". This matter warrants deep thought. Can't be all coincidence.

Hockey and motorsports (rally and Formula 1) are the most popular ones.
Used to be also longer distance track running (think Paavo Nurmi at 5,000 m and 10,000 m) and javelin, but we have sucked at those for so long that few are interested any more.

Congrats to Finland. Starting to become a hockey powerhouse.

How is this? They have been a hockey powerhouse since the nineties. Definitely more accomplished than Slovakia. Of course, their winning history does not go as far back as that of Sweden or Russia, but they have been a force to reckon with for some time now.

One of those is kind of phony and it's actually hard to believe at first sight that it's not the bottom one. Dressing poor Amanda as Mörkö / Mårrin / Bogeyman... cruel, barbaric Finns.

Quick, let's get this to 2,000+ posts before someone gets pedantic and locks it down just because the previous forum software was even more b0rked and had an artificial limit.

No we haven't, not a powerhouse. Certainly more than something you find in an outhouse, and always capable of a surprise upset, but not one of the default favorites in any tourney. I wouldn't quite label that "a force to reckon with" but "a force not to not reckon with", if that makes any sense.

I'd love to have an era where we don't need a Fortress Finland agility-trained-hedgehog team defense and can just go on scoring goals because we can. Maybe, just maybe, it's getting nearer...

[Slovakia and Czech Rep both got kind of interstitial after the sudden de-merger so I feel it's unfair to require them to be yardsticks for others. They both certainly know how to host kick ass pleasant tournaments.]

No.

Finland was a growing force throughout the early nineties.

By 1994-95, Koivu was considered the best player outside the NHL. I remember Finland going into the 1995 WCH as one of the favorites, if not the biggest favorite, and they delivered. From the middle nineties to mid oughties, Finland was a legitimate part of the elite 6-pack that included Russia, Sweden, Canada, Czechia and (to a lesser extent) the US.

Definitely always one of the hottest candidates for a win/medal.
