Find another clip where Maclellan said the Russians "stared them down" in warmups and they used that as extra motivation.

Canada continues to evolve their style of play, whereas Russia persists in using tactics that may work at the WJHC. Russia's list of problems is numerous: they need to find a solution to their coaching woes, develop a new generation of elite defensemen, find more forwards with an elite two-way game like Datsyuk, and resolve the NHL-KHL rift.

When Canada shows up with a skilled group of players that are fast, committed to a 200ft game, and buying in to a balanced four line approach they are a formidable opponent. Staring them down during the warm-ups isn't going to intimidate them. Instead, as McClellan stated, it fired the Canadians up before the game.

these are not unrelated. politics and over-rating KHL talent is a problem.

Their biggest disadvantage compared to their competition is still defence. The Soviets innovated hockey with an emphasis on fitness, skill, and puck possession but you need more than these day. Canada's modern innovation (and how they're building their current dynasty) is their emphasis on mobile, transitional, puck moving d-men. You basically need six Lidstroms in your lineup these days - no room for grinders or 'stay at home' types.

You can see the same principles at play with the way Canada built it's Socchi, WJC, and WC teams.

Winning the last 4 out of 5 Best on Best tournaments- 2002 Olympics, 2004 World Cup, 2010 Olympics and 2014 Olympics is what makes you Number One.
And??? You want to say that Russia, USA, Sweden or Finland worse than Canada? Canada is great, respective team. But they are not USA in basketball.

Canada deserve to win this gold, they have been the best team in this tournament. The only time they where outplayed was against sweden in the first period. Now I guess they will continue acting like jerks and think they own the hockey world, and have over 50% from canada in their top 50 list, or maybe 110% now? It would have been so much easier to cheer for canada if they would not have been such a big jerks. They never show any respect.

Says the guy with no country identity, coward!

Great job today boys. Awesome win. This is a hard tourney to win and Canada was sensational!!

:handclap:

Even the USA in Basketball has lost internationally (2006 World Championships) and 2004 Olympics, finishing Third both times. Why are you twisting my words? Nowhere did i insult any other countries. Right now- there is no doubt that Canada is the Top Hockey Country in the world, based on their track record of success in Best on Best tournaments. There is also no doubt that Russia, USA, Sweden, Finland and the Czechs are very good hockey nations as well.

Sorry, but Canada does not dominate hockey like the Americans dominate basketball.

Lets just enjoy today's win okay.

I don't twist your words. I love Canada team.

I never said they dominated hockey like Americans did basketball, but was pointing out that Team USA did actually lose a couple of times to finish Third. Right now- Canada is Number One, but the gap between Canada, USA, Russia, Finland, Sweden and the Czechs is definitely not that big in an one-game showdown. I agree- time to end this discussion.

Russians can do what ever they want. They have their own rules in IIHF. Buddies with Fasel.

Bad losers who don't have respect for the game or opponents.

Don't want to get off topic BUT Canada in about 5-10 years will begin to soar in basketball in world competition. Not sure where you live in Canada but I could drive you up to Vaughan (North TO) and you'd see some pretty good basketball unfolding. We may have just a few Andrew Wiggins' flaring up here and there in the not too distant future. Just sayin..

Thank you, but there were at least 6 players left. I can see Malkin and Ovi for sure. Obviously Tikhonov.

iihf.jpg

Apparently none of them stayed in the end, go to 3:20, when Canada's anthem was just starting, there were no Russian players on ice at all.

The screengrab you got was when they were leaving the ice before they awarded the cup to Canada.

Looks like Ovi and Malkin and Tikhonov were the last to leave/maybe they wanted to stay? But team solidarity or whatever.

Congrats to Russia on their Silver Medal. However, it is pretty clear that when Canada does send a very good team to this tournament for a change loaded with solid talent, the rest of the world is no match for this Canadian team.

Yeah, Congrats to Team Russia. They played well, and made this a great game. Nothing to feel bad about. Helluva game.

This! Canadians are such jerks. You see it as prove as you being the best in the world as soon as you win, but when you lose you make excuses. I might remind you that canada have fail to go semi-final 5 year in row before this year, and this year you had a easy road and a lot help from the refs. But yes you where the best team in this tournament but you never respect when others are winning. Then you make up excuses.

Btw, canada have send similar team many times to wc and failed, last time was 2013.

Btw, olympic/world cup do not count for canada/usa, since you have NHL-refs there.

Thanks man. ;)

Congrats for the win to this wonderful canadian team and blame to the Russian squad for leaving the ice before the canadian anthem.
What a sportmannship !!
But the real problem of the russian team is their coach.
Znarok is a very undign, disreputable person.Do you remember what he made last year in Sochi ?
I don't understand how can the russian federation do itself represent by this worthless guy ?

Wasn't able to catch a game until today. Canada looked incredible but seriously, major props to Crosby and especially Ovi for playing.

I hope North American players start taking this tournament as seriously as the European players do.

Is there any chance that Jack Eichel is the best player in this draft?

No. After watching him at the U18's last year, WJC and this tournament I think he's a bit overhyped. Great talent for sure, but not generational like McDavid.

I simply don't understand why the IIHF hasn't disqualified Znarok
for the entire life about the throatcut act against the swedens during the last year OG.Fear of the reaction from a powerful russian federation ? It's can't be otherwise.

Congrats Canada! What a dominant performance.

According to Finnish media Captain Kovalchuk waved them out there.

Classy Team Russia.

Kovy is a *********, what else is new? Over the years I've really come to dislike Malkin's antics on the ice, but atleast he, Ovie and Tikhonov are men, and not whimpering little boys like the rest of the team.

Congrats Canada, difference of class against everyone else there.

Russias modesty = non existent, as usual. Few players trying to be decent, 99% simply disappear unless its THEIR anthem and THEIR gold. You guys suck big time.

Also Russian team complained about everything - hotel, food, utility rooms - the ONLY team who complained about anything.

Canada, like the rest of the WC, had no problems. Funny, isnt it?
