On balance I think that's a pretty stable number with the stoppable goals. 28.5 to 29 given the changes in save percentage is surprising to me on some level. I am curious if teams look at the goalies the way you do. It's unique and really hones in on the things that make goalies difference makers.
In the now 5 years I've been doing it I think it's hovered between 27% and 29%. I think the covid shortened year two seasons ago I had it at about 29% that year also.

One guy who has a good year in save percentage, but is not faring well at all in my percentages is Samsonov. I think I have him around 37% or 40% in goals stoppable (my phone is charging right now so I can't look it up for sure) and Murray I have even worse, although he's seen the market correction and his save percentage is now right at or just below league average.

I think Vanecek is like right at my league average, give or a take a few fractions of a percentage.

Schmid is very significantly better than my league average in limited action and Blackwood has been horrific, despite not being terribly below the league average save percentage. He's right around last year's percentage of goals stoppable for me, It was even higher at one point before that Nashville game where he allowed 5 goals and I only counted 1 stoppable and then the St. Louis game where he allowed 4 and I only counted 1 stoppable. I think I have him at like 38% or something.

That's not the highest in the league, pretty sure the worthless young cremains of Matt Murray has a higher percentage than that.

Spencer Knight has close to 50% this year from me, though his save percentage is right around league average. He's in the player assistance program right now and not playing (it was said to NOT be drug/alcohol related) and hasn't played in over a month.

Vanacek has been more or less what was expected from him overall. He's above NHL average in sv pct. and he's roughly league average in stoppable goals. I think they hoped for a bit more consistency but the results have obviously been solid. Schmid looks pretty composed in net this season but I presume next season is when he gets his real chance. As you've noted, Blackwood is expensive and Schmid possibly delivers more for less. I do think Schmid's relatively good numbers have some correlation to his rebound control which has looked good to my eyes. Wasn't Spencer Knight a relatively high pick and a top ranked goalie prospect?

Yeah, Knight was a high pick.

Florida has no cap space so they've had to use him out of necessity as their backup because they're paying so much to Bobrovsky, who isn't any good anymore.

Knight is on his ELC right now, but his extension kicks in next year and I believe it's for $4-something million.

He should have had a year or two in the AHL, but it was either him or Montembeault and Montembeault SUCKED in Florida, so they waived him at the start of last year and Montreal picked him up, so it was down to Knight.

He's only played 13 games in the AHL and 57 regular season and 2 playoff games in the NHL. I think his 2 AHL games this year were just conditioning stint games a few months ago and last year they sent him down a few weekends here and there to play some games, but he hasn't been a full time AHL goalie at all.

the scrub goalies that manage to stick around the league for years really highlights how hard it is to play goalie. One of these journeymen will have a small sample size run of good play and buy two years of an NHL contract somehow. At least a few Montreal fans have delusions of grandeur about Montembault. It's sort of funny.

Softy of the night is this Conor Sheary goal on Anton Khudobin

Khudobin gets himself a softy of the night and 3 goals stoppable in his NHL season debut. He was really bad.

Goals against review for the March 24rd, 2023 Devils game against the Sabres

Schmid looked like a Statue in Goals 2 and 3.

Vitek let in a putrid 4th goal in relief.

Percentage of goals stoppable: Uhhh? Combined save percentages: Math is hard

(not exactly @Bleedred quality but I gave it my best shot. :sarcasm: )

I think the Devils game's Softy of the Night is the Dougie goal on Ferguson.

Just a hunch.
It is.

That’s my only spoiler. Everything is reviewed and the notes are taken, as is normally the case by this time the night before.

I just don’t feel like typing it up, because of how long it is. So I usually wait until the next morning or afternoon, unless it was a very light night on the schedule, which today was not. There were 15 games.

Today I typed last night’s in line at the store and didn’t even hit send until I got back to the car.

I would normally type it up that night on a 3 game night, but was really tired last night and went to bed earlier than normal.

I think it’s sort of harsh blaming the other team’s goalie scoring on a defenseman. I mean Dr. Evil isn’t regularly a goalie.
Thanks for putting that out! Seriously!

Old age and fatigue strikes again!

Wonder if my friend's 85 year old grandfather that takes long bike rides that I just posted about would do that shit? I should talk to him about it haha.

And I wonder how many times I've done that no only this year, but over the years? It can't be the first! And it won't be nearly the last!

And I got so caught up in both life and the Blackwood debate in the other thread I posted it hours after posting the actual review haha.

Considering how long it takes to out this together I’m impressed with your accuracy. One flub is fun not critical.

My only complaint I have with this is typing it

Like, I wish I could speak the stuff into something and I don't mean the bullshit talk text thing that doesn't know how to interpret things correctly and can't punctuate and when you say Shesterkin it comes out Sharangovich.

I don't make nearly as many speaking errors as I do typing errors.

Reviewing the goals and jotting down the findings in my notepad on my phone is no problem. It's kind of fun.

Typing up this big behemoth after 15 games and 87 goals is the most taxing. Even though it doesn't take as long as watching all 87 goals.

I'm sure there's been times on these heavy games nights where I've even forgot to type up one of the results in my posted review. I know I never forget to watch the goals in a game or write down what happened in my notes, but I know I've probably accidentally omitted one or left one off on the typed up reviews before.

I always read them but usually focus on the better goalies so if something happens and you forget to post about Louis Domingue I won’t necessarily notice anyway. It’s always a good snapshot of which goalies are playing well and also some sort of check on whether goals are up because the goalies are worse or thr skaters are better.

There's some goalies that don't look that bad in my findings, but really are.

Jonathan Quick is a great example of this.

I don't have an extremely high percentage of his goals as stoppable. but I can see what he's doing wrong. I leave confirmation bias out of this.

The problem with Quick is not that he gives up goals that look bad. He gives up A LOT of goals that don't look bad. Goals that look like he has no chance on them, but in actuality he does have a chance on these goals, but due to his playing style it makes it look like he has no chance on them and he doesn't really give himself a chance on them because of his playing style.

There's a lot of goals that don't look stoppable, but kind of are because he's slipping and sliding and too aggressive. Breakdancing on his ass or belly for a lot of the game.

These don't come up in my notces, as that would be confirmation bias.

Knowing Quick as well as I do now, I can easily see what he's doing wrong on almost all of his goals. It's not that he gives up goals that look bad. It's the goals that don't look bad, but these are goals he really has a chance on because of his playing style being too overaggressive and erratic.

It worked for a long time for him, but really hasn't for 4 of the last 5 years.

Martin Jones doesn't look like he gives up a lot of bad goals either. Some years I have him high, while others I don't. But he's just a dumbass, low IQ goalie. One of the dumbest. He's more mentally poor than physically bad. He never really does what he should and it's nothing but poor reads with him.

I'm noticing the same thing with that SCRUB that Buffalo has up right now that beat us the other night.

Just a guess but a guy that is very aggressive probably relies too much on reflexes and athleticism which are the first things to go on a player
