Goals against review for the October 7th, 2022 game. The first of the new season.

Sharks vs Predators: 3 goals against Reimer, 1 stoppable. 1 goal against Saros, 0 stoppable.

4 goals scored against goalies, 1 stoppable. Percentage of goals stoppable: 25%

Combined save percentages: .935%

I figured it's easier to just bump last year's thread rather than make a new one. It also makes it easier to go back and look at last year's as an archive when I wanna look at those years down the road.

Softy of the night is this Eeli Tolvanen goal on James Reimer

It certainly won’t be the softest we’ll see this season, but it certainly was deserving of the first softy of the night of the year, on a game night where there’s only one game on in the entire league.

Goals against review for the October 8th, 2022 game

Predators vs Sharks: 2 goals against Lankinen, 0 stoppable. 3 goals against Kahkonen, 1 stoppable.

5 goals scored against goalies, 1 stoppable. Percentage of goals stoppable: 20%. Combined save percentages: 896%.

Softy of the night is this Filip Forsberg goal on Kaapo Kahkonen

Only took 8 goals into the season for a dreaded wraparound goal. Pathetic rebound to begin with, and a really pathetic failed attempt at getting back over in time.

Goals against review for the October 11th, 2022 games

Lightning vs Rangers: 3 goals against Vasilevskiy, 0 stoppable. 1 goal against Shesterkin, 0 stoppable.

Golden Knights vs Kings: 3 goals against Thompson, 0 stoppable. 4 goals against Quick, 0 stoppable.

11 goals scored against goalies, 0 stoppable. Percentage of goals stoppable: 0%. Combined save percentages: .924%.

No stoppable goals, so no softy of the night.

A couple of rebounds didn’t look so good on Quick though.

softy of the night is clearly you.

you seem to become too gentle with advanced age. or is it the brattpack experience?

It's happened before. A two game night where I counted 0 stoppable.

A couple of the Quick rebounds were borderline though. There was a semi-wraparound on Thompson (it wasn't a true wraparound) where there was a wide open chance on Thompson that he stopped and was way out of position for. Actually, I think one of his teammates might have even at least somewhat made contact with him and made it harder to recover. Kopitar took it around the back of the net and passed it to Kempe in front who had the empty net. I've never nailed a goalie on a goal like that, unless the goalie actually did something to cause the entire play, like gave the puck away.

Tune in tonight. There's 6 games on and sure to be something in there.

The 10% stoppable goal percentage is something that absolutely won't sustain itself. I normally have it in the upper 20's. Somewhere around 27%-28%. There's only been 4 games played in the NHL so far and only 6 teams have actually played. I'm pretty sure the current league average save percentage through 6 games is over .920%. Another number that won't sustain itself.

And this is assuredly going to be the last day where I can say ''I have not counted a single goal stoppable from a non-Sharks goalie''.

Softy of the night is this David Pastrnak goal on Darcy Kuemper

This goal looks way worse at some angles than it does at others. The TNT crew didn’t seem to think it was a great goal on Kuemper either. Biz called it a bit of a softy, which surprised me, as I figured it was just me and they’d be gushing over it cause it’s Pastrnak and a spinarama, which they kind of were gushing over it but also critical of Kuemper.

Apparently I’m not supposed to call shots from Pastrnak stoppable, as I was told after he scored a leaky goal on Blackwood in the last preseason game.

Hey, what do you think about second goal of Caufield? Is he really stoppable, stoppable on theory but the most of goalies would missed it, or it wasn't Murray's fault? Please be objective, I don't wanna defend Murray here or bash. How he played positionallY? Should he be on the net, Move more on the left or make a step forward? Or he shouldn`t because he opened a lot of space behind him? Please, make a full analysis of the positional choice of Murray.

Woof. Absolutely a stoppable goal.

Somehow I expected the Kraken-Ducks line to read:

5 goals against Grubauer, 6 stoppable. 4 goals against Gibson, 7 stoppable. It looked bad, although Campbell looked just as awful at the beginning of the game for Edmonton.

I had to go back and watch a few times, as well as slowing it down a bit, but I did remember that this was the goal that I really didn't like on Murray.

Now, this is just the opinion and commentary of a non-professional that has a non-hockey related dayjob. I don't know for sure what the goalie coach would have instructed him to do in this case, but it was absolutely a goal that Murray wasn't happy with himself after letting in. He shakes his head and swings his arm in disgust after it goes in.

When slowing it down, it looks like he may have been slightly off his angle and maybe should have been a little more to his left. I also wonder if maybe he's a little deep in the net, but not terrible deep in the net. I've always noticed when a goalie leaves too much room on the short side high and it's definitely something Blackwood does a lot of, as well going down prematurely.

When slowing this one down though and I really notice that this was a puck he could have snagged with his glove and it looks like he misses it. I tried to pause and screen shot on my phone the point where the puck is right at his glove. It doesn't appear he had his glove up high enough to get this shot as it came through, but he also looks like he misses it anyway and is too slow to react. He was particularly not happy with himself on this goal after it went in.

This was not a softy of the night caliber goal for me, but I also thought it was one an obvious one where the goalie could have snagged it.

The glove has been exposed as Murray's weakness for a while. I remember when I think it was Washington eliminated Pittsburgh in 2018 in the second round. It was the first playoff series Murray lost after they won the cup two years in a row and he personally was in net for 7 straight series wins before that.

I’ve tried to slow this down and it’s probably gonna come out a little grainy on here.

And here it is after sailing over him. You can very clearly see the puck in the top corner of the net on this one. Looks like the puck went up and over him more than it originally being labeled for the top corner.

Thanks so much. I was thought he decide to pick the right "vertical" position, because he would open a lot of space behind him if he decide to step forward and Caufield could just shot after a couple of steps, but his "horizontal" was questionable. We can see open mtl player above Tor#16, may be he was waiting a pass, I don`t know should he think about it as a goalie. His reaction game is a thing I don`t know how to judge. Release was fast and quite good right under the crossbar.

Thanks again for your breakdown.

No problem!

I haven't really broken down or analyzed goals like this very often, and this was actually an interesting one to break down, as I saw several potential problems with it and not just one obvious one.

Softy of the night is this Marcus Johansson goal on Ilya Samsonov

There were some good ones last night, both from Blackwood and Hart, Sorokin allowed a terrible rebound that led to a very terrible wraparound goal. Martin Jones with a wraparound goal. You don't often see two true wraparound goals a night. I'm pretty they're already beating dead angle goals from along the goal line so far this year. That's not something that typically happens in recent years, so it probably won't stay that way. Charlie Lindgren really showed why he's an AHL goalie with one of the goofy goals he allowed, but it was deflected, so I couldn't give it a softy of the night.

This is just a really weak shot and it leaks through him. Should have been a routine save with ease.

I really thought it was gonna be AJ Greer on Vejmelka, but then I got to this game and saw this and was like ''WHAT THE f*** MAN?''.

Fleury had an equally bad first few games last year where he really looked finish, but you just never know at just about 38 years old.

No words for this one. Just embarrassing.

However, I will say there were enough softies last night to make up for a pretty good week’s worth of really good softy of the night goals. There were quite a few blooper reel goals and this was just one of them.

I’ll post a few more of them and do a montage after lunch.

Thanks for this. Please feel free to point this out anytime. I may do this more than I realize. Not sure if this was an autocorrect or if I had started to type the other games and mixed them up or if just old age.

The fact that I can’t remember is already a sign of old age….
