I really don’t know if I can give Kuemper a goal stoppable for that Cirelli goal, but it didn’t look great and I didn’t really like the way the Maroon goal looked either.

Softy of the night is this Jan Rutta goal on Darcy Kuemper

This was a very ugly one.

Goaltending is a significant problem for the NJ Devils, IMO.

What signal will the owners send through Fitz that they are serious about getting into the playoffs vs. a "lifetime" rebuild? Fitz, IMO, needs to acquire two new goalies from free agency.

Blackwood, IMO, isn't the answer as a starter or backup for this coming season, 2023. His heel injury seems to be chronic. He seems to have other health & mental issues he deals with. He was forced into remaining as a goaltender instead of going on IR because of Bernier's situation. He needs this coming 2023, season, off to heal mentally and physically and then see what he has going for him as a starter, not backup, for 2024.

Bernier is done as a goalie; he is 34 years old with a hip, let me repeat, hip injury. He tried to play through the hip injury without success. He recently had hip surgery. I wouldn't expect him back, except he has $4.5M left in his contract to be excited about.

The Devils must anchor the defense with two solid goaltenders as they rebuild the weaknesses with the NJ Devils defense.

They have great centers but very little quality in wings to support them. That's an area for Fitz to work on.

IMO goalies are 1st with the defense. If they can get two decent goalies through free agency, then they can add a couple of decent defensemen.

After that, let's get some scoring by adding wings of quality.

So what message will the owners send to the fans? What type of job can Fitz do, acquiring the needs? Who will coach whatever is delivered to the ice?

No need to change the coach if we don't get goalies.

My plan: Stop the goals against with new goalies, then get a couple of defensemen of quality and add some quality wings for scoring. In the future, after 2023, add players to win more games and to get into the playoffs. Then keep improving the team year after year.

As I keep saying, I'm just about done with Blackwood. If he plays poorly this year, he's gone anyway after the year, as he won't be worth his qualifying offer. If he plays well then he might be due for a raise, only for him to come out and return to the garbage, terrible Blackwood for 2023-2024 on the first year of his new deal, just like the first (two) year of his current deal.

I've seen this movie enough to know, be it from Cory Schneider or goalies around the league. Blackwood's AHL resume is a severe red flag when you combine it with his last two NHL years.

Yes, I give him a better chance of bouncing back than I ever gave Cory, but I'm still not giving it great odds if I were a betting man.

Regardless, I'm sure he has approximately 5 more years left in the league (more than 5 if he does somewhat or even slightly bounce back), even if he sucks for the better part of those 5 years. It takes almost forever for a goalie that has even a year's worth of good play on their resume to wash out of the NHL. Look at Martin Jones, he keeps getting deals. The Blue Jackets can't get enough of Korpisalo, despite his one and only good season being his rookie year of 15-16 and then one average year in 19-20 and 4 of his 7 years in the league have been .897% or worse.

I don't see his ceiling anymore being too much higher than a league average goalie. Depending on who we sign (or trade for) this offseason, there won't be much room to tie up into him going past this year if he does somehow play his way to either a raise or about the same salary.

Softy of the night is this Steven Stamkos goal on Darcy Kuemper

Not really worth a softy of the night, but this goal looked kind of poor on Kuemper. It was pretty lucky, but I remember critiquing the goalie on goals like this plenty and being given a hard time for it. I remember a goal like this on Marty in his last season here and I thought it was bad. Most people didn’t agree.

Sorry, I am tired of waiting. We need two decent goalies to build our defense out from and then a couple of wings to assist our decent centers. If not, as fans we will be stuck in the longest rebuild. The owners need to tell Fitz lets get into the playoffs not squeeze in but get in. That's we're I am coming from, sorry.

I think we're closer than you think, but I have no more patience to put up with hoping and praying that a guy is gonna bounce back.

And to put it bluntly, Blackwood was NEVER as good as Schneider was in the NHL.

He's younger by quite a bit than Schneider was when he started breaking down, but he was never on the level of Schneider before the hip problems started in 2016.

You are my expert when it comes to goalies, I am only the student. I never thought Blackwood was the answer, not even close.

I'm no expert, but at the same time, I do have an admittedly snobby level of arrogance after people being mad that I said Cory wouldn't bounce back or that I shouldn't be writing off Blackwood, etc.

I thought he COULD have been the answer, but he's really only shown about a 3-4 month, maybe 4 months worth of solid NHL starting goalie level play.

His AHL career was mediocre, with only one season even being decent and one being almost historically bad.

His last two years have been horrific in the NHL and I'm skeptical a healthy Blackwood is really an above average goalie if it's in more than a backup role.

The goalie mess really set them back this season. It makes evaluating anything in front of them difficult. If the fancy advanced stats crowd is correct, NJ should have been about 20-22 points better with average goalies. That's not great, but that would have been a solid improvement over the prior season, put in sharp focus who and what worked and didn't, and set the team up to make the smart moves to get them over the hump into a good playoff team. Instead, the team is at ground zero and it's hard to even know what worked.

Weren't you the one who kept telling us that Cory was .920 to finish that last season and his play at the Worlds proved he was ready to bounce back and that NJ should look to give him a long extension because the hip injury was a thing of the past?

I don't want to find out for fear we are correct, I think we are. Time to move on. Put a team on the ice that is not sliding into the last spot before your centers are too old. I am not big on the owners wanting more than tons of money from the arena and profits, that doesn't include a winning Devils team because they are getting enough as the team is playing today. They would rather win with the NBA Philly 76ers.
