I'm sure Tocchet likes the idea of challenging his team to improve their defensive play for rookie Silovs' sake, especially against a powerhouse roster like the Rangers. I'd call this a smack in the face challenge.

Hopefully this game goes better for Silovs than it did for Mikey DiPeitro a few years back when he got buried by the San Jose Sharks.

But the reality is, when it comes to assessing the Canucks prospect pool, Silovs has been criminally underrated imo. He's had a breakthrough season in Abbotsford, and isn't as far away from the NHL despite being only 21.

Whats with all the paranoia around here..?...I'm sure Silovs is excited to play...You've got to start at some point.

I get that..I remember Marky getting completely lit up on one of his first games a Canuck...He survived it...You've got to start somewhere.

To me, this seems like a reward for a player who has shown well..not a pressure situation where he's been thrown in there because our starters all went down to injury.

What good is sitting at the end of the bench going to do for 2 games.?

I probably only agree with 2 of your posts a year but I'm going to use them both up at once here - totally agree. Can't stand this soft thinking about not wanting to play him here. This isn't an OHL goalie, he's played in the AHL all year and deserves a chance over the guys who have been playing.

I had a well thought out post written out and somehow it was deleted so I'm not going to bother rewriting it.

The Rangers are in the top 10 for goals for, Philly and Nashville bottom 10. I'm all for giving Silovs a look but might have opted to go with one of those games. Anyway league wide there's rando goalies that come up and have great games, might as well try it here too, after years of committing bad money to veteran backups and refusing to play younger goalies.

Pulling for Silovs tonight.....but realistically can he be any worse than Delia was in the last game?

You'd think that a team would rally around its' rookie goaltender and lock things down on in the defensive zone. But this current cast of Canucks just doesn't seem capable to doing that unfortunately.

Its all good.

Go Silovs.

Whatever the score is (most likely a much needed loss)..He's not going to get any blame (nor should he)

Please don't ruin Arty's confidence tonight he's been absolutely on fire in Abby lately

Really don't understand playing him, especially with our porous D, would be better to keep his confidence up as he's trending very well right now

Demko's NHL debut - 23 years and (almost) 4 months
Silovs' NHL debut - 21 years and (almost) 11 months

That says a lot about his development.

Totally fine with this. Delia & Martin don't deserve to be in an NHL net so why not see what someone else can do?

Yup.

Silovs had his best weekend of the year in the AHL last year, might as well try the hot hand and see if he can provide something better than the garbage they've been receiving.

People I think are paranoid because once upon a moonbeam we gave Dipietro a start when he was 19 and he was shelled, but this isn't the same thing - Silovs is 2 years older and has been a quality regular starting goalie in the AHL.

Guys, dont panick. As someone already mentioned, if a bad game is able to ruin a professional athletes confidence, he should not be a professional athlete.
Getting a game in the NHL is the biggest dream of any hockey player, and it is about to come true for him. I bet he is super excited. He sees that good performance is being rewarded in this organization. If anything, it should bolster his confidence.
Everyone, including him, should understand that the result of this game will have almost zero impact on his future carreer. He is not on a try-out contract. Regardless of his performance tonight, he is getting sent down once Demko is back, or even sooner. He starts the next season in the AHL. And only his results in the long run matter.
He is probably pretty pumped to become the 22nd Latvian ever to play in the NHL. And the 3rd to play for the Canucks - after Herberts Vasiljevs (2001-02, 18 games 5 points) and Ronalds Kenins (2014-16, 43 games 14 points).
Arturs Irbe 1997-1998.

It's probably not possible to develop a goalie behind this team defense so that's a good reason to wish he wasn't playing here.

In all other ways he's earned it and is ready, D+4 with 45 AHL games and has earned the chance. At some point you have to reward good play on the farm even if the circumstances up here suck.

Glancing at this roster, it could be pretty good with like vintage Dominik Hasek in net.

With Silovs in I'll watch this one start to finish. I watched both Abbotsford games over the weekend and he looked very solid. Rebound control was good. Tracked the puck well. Very controlled in his movements.
Athletic goalies who play aggressively do well at lower levels but struggle when the skill and speed of the game increases. You can get away with being slightly out of position in the AHL, you have more time to recover. Smaller goalies, as a general rule, have to be more aggressive and do what they can to make up for it with athleticism. I think this is the reason that DiPietro struggled and is now in the ECHL.

And I agree with other posters who have said that this is very different from the DiPietro debacle in the NHL.

I think Demko went the US College route and I guess got his degree. That generally means a given sports athlete will be a couple years older vs a similiar prospect going the Juniors route in Canada.

I don't think this is comparable to the Dipietro situation, but I still do not think it's an ideal circumstance to be putting him into.

But if the organization feels he's currently a better goalie than the rest of the goalies, and Delia is holding his head above water, then you should expect that same outcome... or you at least hope for it.

10-2 Rangers.
Silovs allows 6 in 25 minutes of play, Delia on for the next 4.

End result- draft another goalie- they broke this one.
I really hope you're wrong but it wouldn't surprise me at all if this happens. We are so good at ruining goalies...

Yeah my theory is that by putting Silovs in for what is going to be a pretty tough game and not an easier one later is to apply a bit of shock therapy to this team by challenging them to support their new young protege. A real character test you could say. God help him...
