People keep saying stuff like this like if they say it enough times, it becomes reality. Care to explain to me how a team with “no system in either end” lucked into one of the best records in the nhl over the last 3 months?

There are still 22 teams with a legit shot at the playoffs - in the east only 3 teams have been eliminated. Every team has a shot, Ottawa didn’t special in any way, Buffalo can say the exact same thing Ottawa can, Detori too

I see a debate on the the players we acquired being long term solutions.

I think "long term solutions" requires a definition. So, the questions would be:

-> Is 2 years (after this season) considered "long term"?

-> If the 2 years includes a (expensive) Qualifying Offer, is it long term?

I think the definition that people use will help clarify to make sense of ones stance on this subject.

T.O.
If we're keeping him he should be surrounded with a much bigger and more competent team of hockey people, especially in scouting and analytics. I think all the blunders and working under heavy meddling have taught him some valuable lessons, and he's been much better as a result of late. I wonder how much we should credit Bowness as well.
It's what any competitive team would have and PD deserves the support too.

I also want them to give him a budget for a coach that can't be bought at the dollar tree.

interesting to note from DFO podcast is that Dubas is an ottawa senators fan

might be the man for the job with new ownership if it doesnt work out in Toronto

We have given up 25 or less shots 11 times since Dec 1. That never happened before.

I mean that happened all the time under Jacques Martin, so definitely not the first time in Sens history but this is also certainly the best defensive consistency in DJ’s era.

why not?

I think he would do a great job building out so many departments for the Senators . Maybe as a POHO role
Because I am unimpressed with the job he has done in Toronto. He has constantly been reacting to the obvious failings with his team, AFTER it’s too late, and hasn’t been able to fill the holes, still, during their window.

I’m not trying to say he’s horrible, but he’s hasn’t done anything worth coveting In my opinion.

As you know, the thin front office has little to do with Dorion not being able to find good help, it’s because he wasn’t allowed to hire good help. We have slowly been adding good people to the front office now that we have more budget, and there will obviously be more coming, Alfie included.

I’m not sure what Dubas has done hiring wise that would excite us either.

We can do better.

I don't trust his contract giving. He's good at trades and getting team needs met, but his contracts are beyond bottom tier

why though? def has made mistakes but I think him being the leafs gm is a big factor in the hate here

I think he has done a great job being a progressive GM who has built out his analytics team and is willing to try more out of the box ideas (load management etc).

He also brought in the right guys to skirt the cap issues

Not sure if he is my top choice but he is better than many old school GMs imo

Dubas in general is really good at player acquisitions, but it's hard to look past how badly he got bent over in the negotiations with Matthews and Marner.

Matthews could walk next year at 26 because Dubas caved and gave him a 5 year extension, when it never should have been on the table.

Never even got a discount either. 11.6M on a heavily front-loaded deal paid almost entirely in bonuses was about as good as Matthews should have expected to get on an 8 year extension.

Why on earth would you want Dubas?! He was handed 4 superstar forwards with unlimited resources and has done absolutely nothing with it. It took him this long to even understand what the team needed. He finally went out and got the missing types of pieces they needed burning countless assets in doing so.

The real problem is the NMC in the final year. What the hell are the Leafs going to do this summer?

I think they'll just keep him and hope he changes his mind as the season goes along.

I also don't know if Matthews will want to sign an extension with any team after the bad season he's had relative to his standards.

To be fair, the league was averaging about 3 or 4 fewer shots a game back then, different times.

This is true, but to be fair, there is no comparison to be made in shot suppression between Jacques’ Sens and DJ’s, era or not.
Of course, they did it on a regular basis, the point though was that 25 shots against today is not the same as in the late 90s and pre-lockout. Just adding some context.

The Philly-Ottawa “someone is going to make Havlat eat his lunch” game was a 1-0 game - the most boring hockey game ever and my ticket was $100. Hall of Famers all over the ice and everyone was asleep and the arena was dead (and sold out)

No comparison between those eras and this. The hockey now is 100000000 times better

Part of that though is the NHL waking up. Fans want excitement. They want goals.

No one ever said "holy shit, did you see that play with Derian Hatcher water skiing on Sakic?"

The NHL rightly imo changed the rules and upped enforcement so that skill players can skill. Carolina leads the league in shots against and they are 25.5 per game

Dubas hasn't done anything yet to prove that he can bee successful post-season! Simple as that!
Perhaps this year will be the year but until then, he is over-rated.
