why though? def has made mistakes but I think him being the leafs gm is a big factor in the hate here

I think he has done a great job being a progressive GM who has built out his analytics team and is willing to try more out of the box ideas (load management etc).

He also brought in the right guys to skirt the cap issues

Not sure if he is my top choice but he is better than many old school GMs imo
Bad at negotiating contracts and term on star players.

Part of that though is the NHL waking up. Fans want excitement. They want goals.

No one ever said "holy shit, did you see that play with Derian Hatcher water skiing on Sakic?"

The NHL rightly imo changed the rules and upped enforcement so that skill players can skill. Carolina leads the league in shots against and they are 25.5 per game

I agree its a good thing shots are up.

My point was just that the idea that having 11 games with under 25 shots allowed « never happened before » might apply to DJ’s tenure but it didnt apply to sens history as a whole.

Removing the centre line had a big effect.

Outaide fan in peace but interested in feedback...regarding the next coupke years salary cap wise.. i will just paste what i posted in the nucks forum.. interested in hearing thoughts

ottawa's rebuild has been coming up a lot in the last bit.. what is interesting in how they are similar to toronto in giving their young players big contracts 'before' proving anything - and with debrincat due this year and sanderson due after next year, i took a quick look at where they are heading. next season pro players on the books include:

Giroux / Stutzle / kastelic / kelly / norris
tkachuk / joseph
batherson
chabot / chychrun / zub / sanderson
forbserg / sogaard
dead cap (buyouts/bonuses)

sitting at 14.3 million cap space on an 83.5 cap. 8 forwards / 4 dmen / 2 goalies signed. Debrincat (gotta get 8.5?) and Pinto (2.5 on a bridge? / 4-5 long term?) to be signed of importance. so either 11 million (pinto bridge) or 13 (pinto long term) which basically sucks their space for THIS season. they have 6.8 million in the dead cap/bonuses etc... which drops to under a million the year after. but then you have sanderson (which you gotta go long on - 6-7.5 i think)

it's interesting the juggling they need to do over the next 2-3 years, using min players, potentially sacrificing a player (joseph), no for sure goalie

while the 'rebuild' is done - they have their core - it could be tight/interesting for them

Yeah, the two line passes was so lame…. Now they have to fix the offside rule to ‘breaking the plane’
That will be an improvement but it may be equally difficult to get right.

I would like to see consistent calling of cross checking next season.

Hahahaha funny. The majority at the time. Also thought so. , and glad you agreed on the term now at least.
Salary was overpaid for the term they got.
Nylander is a great contract. Yo could argue about term but a team like the leafs don’t worry about player retention. Matthews got 5 years to bring the AAV under 12M while Marner is paid appropriately. The only good thing that came from Covid was a flat cap which screwed Dubas.

Yes im in the wrong thread?

I am interested in ottawa fans thoughts on this. Not a sens fan, but really like a lot of the players.. and the mix of them
This one might cover what you're looking for,

Talbot was healthy at the deadline, but getting someone like Stalock for cheap could have done wonders. Oh well.
Pretty much knew Forsberg was done for a while, I'm a bit surprised we didn't make a waiver claim on a guy like Spencer Martin or make a trade for a hellberg type goalie, I guess nobody was selling cheap backups...

Failed to get a goalie when our top 2 went down.

That's 2-3 wins lost. Goalies have cost us last few games.
I want Dorion replaced no two ways about it but like others have mentioned Talbot was healthy at the deadline. Hated the initial trade for him but he was apparently ok at the time.

Which ones? I honestly can't think of one during this skid.

Colorado was on the ref. Last night the sens missed too many chances. Only goal I didn't like was the Marner one but he's a star and it was on the pp.

Rest of the games the sens were outplayed or didn't score.

They had Hellberg but placed him on waivers when both goalies were finally healthy unfortunately that didn't last very long. Can't remember the last time Ottawa had so many injured goalies in the org or when they lost both goalies for extended periods. Nobody knows when injuries will occur or how severe they will be, is this a year where one could argue for having a bubble NHL goalie in the minors?

I mean, having a vet in the AHL is something we could have done, like when we had McKenna, but with two developing goalie prospects down there, I guess we thought we had to prioritize their development.

The issue though isn't that we let Hellberg go or didn't sign a vet AHL guy in the offseason, it's that when Forberg went down we decided to ride it out rather that get a backup to finish off the last quarter of the season. We had about three weeks between him going down and the trade deadline, I suspect the issue was more on the supply side though, I'm guessing there wasn't much on the market for short term solutions. I guess we could have chased a Talbot replacement for next year.

It will be interesting to see what they do in nets for next yr considering all of the problems they have had with injuries to goalies in their org this yr & last. Do they now need to have 3 goalies, maybe a vet in Belleville but unless they are young they could get lost on waivers when the regulars return as Hellburg did. It's a problem but I'm not really sure what the solution is other than for them to stay healthy.

Let's hope that Sogaard got enough experience this yr in the NHL that he will suffice as the callup next season, he gave them every opportunity to win last night. Hopefully, they can find a #1 or very good backup for next season this summer.
