Is that where this beauty line is coming from?

This is a year not to have a first round pick? Based on his scouting staff? I imagine his job security as GM entered that equation.

i think its more so when cat gets traded for pieces to help now it doesnt get called into question

which honestly i would have accepted but the line makes it difficult to accept with everyone else saying this draft is stacked

Surprising ... well considering its Dorion maybe not.

Everything I've heard is that this is a really strong deep first round.. now that could be some hype mixed in but certainly I would consider the top 15 strong and I think there will be quality into the 20s

Well they traded the pick for Chychrun. You reckon there's someone around where they would have selected who could have had the immediate impact that Chychrun will have on a team that has to make the playoffs this year? Or should we keep collecting prospects and picks till kingdom come?

Few years back Pronman did a piece where he went through drafts and basically concluded that unless its a super strong or super weak year they all mostly end up generating a similar number of quality NHLers.

I'm not debating the merits of using our first round pick to acquire Chychrun.

One, I'm saying that PD saying that the quality of this year's draft candidates was lacklustre is in stark contrast to what we've heard from draft analysts about this year's talent pool.

And (B), the context wasn't about the value of that 1st rd pick traded for Chycrun. It's about trying to trade up to get someone else's 1st rd pick.

I agree the context was about obtaining a 1st this vs next year. Its not a very strong draft according to Dorion so his interests align with the other GMs. They don't want to give up their 1st this year and Dorion doesn't think they are worth much.

Lol you dont need a study for that, if you take away the outliers you end up with the mushy middle

Yeah, the most charitable way to intepret his justification was that other GMs' 1st-round-pick offerings for Senators assets are underwhelming, based in his eval of the draft options likely available at the respective pick positions.

Dorion’s recommendation was to keep the coach who has his team out of playoff contention by November every season?
I'm not PD's biggest fan but I was okay keeping him as long as he went after a better coach this year. Now I really want him gone. The team is good enough to compete, if DJ can't do it, it's time to move on. Need someone better at identifying our glaring issue.

To me, it sounded like he said 2 separate things within 1 continuous thought.

1) he doesn't think they will end up with a 1RP this year and, separately, 2) 1RPs are not worth as much as GMs are thinking they are.

I don't know if it's just posturing to get better trade value for Debrincat or if they genuinely believe the draft, around where they would have picked, was not sufficiently deep to get a high-quality prospect or if they just don't value 1RPs as highly as they did before because they're looking to make the playoffs this year.

I guess I'd need to listen to the clip again to hear the exact phrasing he used.

I'm sure Dorion was also quoted as saying "That's cool. I didn't even want to go to the draft anyway!" while crossing his arms and sulking.

I suppose one thing we can all agree on, this has to be a humbling experience for DeBrincat
Yep. It’s nice to want to “bet on yourself” (god I’m sick of that overused phrase) but if DeBrincat continues to hold out for UFA status and has another season like last year it’ll potentially have cost him millions.

He doesn't value picks in this draft because he traded away all of them to try and save his job. Much easier to just say meh the draft sucks.

Even though everyone is excited for draft and in the 20s you could have guys like Honzek, But, Stenberg, Sale, and in the late teens guys like Perrault, Barlow, Wood could be available.

It's typical Dorion insecurity saying the draft isn't good.

Corrected that for you.

When does ownership get the keys? September?

Cant wait for this clown to be gone
Fire him now and let Bowness take over before more idiotic trades are made. Destroying any leverage they have. Or just put pierre in a room and dont let him talk to the media. Gag him.

Well if Dorion's comments today are to believed, he already is making the calls.

Corrected that for you.
Excactly.

Ultimately, DeBrincat will get his bag from someone and he'll get the last laugh. While the Ottawa Senators are left selling low again.

Didn’t PD say Andlauer was advised, as opposed to making the call. Bettman already said he can’t make the calls yet.

This tweet seems to imply direct contact. Thought I saw an actual quoted one, but can't find it now.

This one, that says consulted,

and Claire’s tweet also sounds like PD making call not Andlauer.
Yes they can consult as Bettman said, (might have said indirectly)
final say is the team.

It sounds more like Andlauer giving Dorion permission to make said call after being consulted, which that quote again implies direct consultation, not necessarily through the board.

That's what I was saying. I didn't mean that Andlauer is making coaching hires (or the opposite in this case), but that he's already the godfather being consulted and deciding who is empowered to make decisions, which is Dorion in this case. Andlauer could have just as easily said he wanted Dorion to look outside and move on.
