Are the Kings closer to contending for a Cup with or without Kopitar? I think we know the answer to that question.
I would agree we know the answer to the question, "Are the Kings a better team with or without Kopitar?"

They are no closer to contending for a cup with Kopitar this season than they were last season, and Kopitar is having a great season.

I will be happy to be wrong if Kopitar puts the team on his back and pulls off a miracle in this season.

FWIW PIT last year had Malkin at 15.17%, Crosby at 13.89%, AND Kessel at 10.86%. They won a Cup. Kopitar is currently at 13.55%--I'll take it for the years of healthy consistent production vs. the volatility of those mentioned.

Check your math. Last year Crosby 11.9%, Malkin 13%, and Kessel 9.3%.

Take their cap hits and divide by $73M. Last year Kopitar's cap hit was 13.7% of the $73M salary cap.

My bad, was going by the numbers at Pittsburgh Penguins 2016 Salary Cap, for example.

Regardless, the point stands, superstars get paid, and teams still win with them, historically and recently, unless you're really willing to split hairs about literally less than a percentage point. The Blackhawks were actually an exception in that Toews/Kane hadn't gotten paid yet and Keith/Hossa were on legacy contracts where they DID get paid but got the benefit of the workaround. Even going back a decade, Detroit had Datsyuk/Zetterberg, Pit had Crosby/Malkin, Bos had Chara, Pitt again recently. Chicago and Kings got away with some of the legacy deals as well as youngsters before big payday.

Unless we're going to pretend Crosby eating 15+ percent of the 2009 Penguins cap doesn't count.

Is it harder to win with said contracts? Only if you pay the wrong guys.

I think you are selling a healthy Kings team short here, and are really underestimating the loss of Carter. The Kings are 13-4-3 with him in the lineup even with him having to work his way back. It's not a stretch to say this team has 100 points already with him in the lineup consistently.

So what's the difference between Malkin's contract and Kopitar's? 0.7%? Under your argument, there's basically only three people with a Kopitar-type deal. Kopitar, Kane, and Toews. What's the point of saying "Get back to me when a team with those types of contracts wins a cup" when that only applies to one team?

Just admit the fact that Malkin proved you wrong and move on.

Except for this season Malkin has been a better player on a consistent basis. Malkin demonstrated early in his career he is a generational talent and has for the most part maintained that level of performance. That's the big difference between Kopitar and Malkin.

Kopitar having a great 2017-18 season doesn't change my opinion. Now if Kopitar goes on to put up 80+ point seasons over the next 5 years, I will gladly eat crow.

Kopitar puts the team on his back, has a career night and scores 4 goals in a game for the Kings for the first time in over 25 years, against a team we're fighting for a playoff spot with in the last few weeks of the season, and we're back to the tired arguing about his contract? Again?

Oooooook.

Then don't join the conversation or read the posts.

Since we're telling each other what to do, this is the GDT. Stay on topic.
For a game that is over. I responded to a post in the GDT which was made following the game.

When people stop making comments about this topic in the GDT, I will quit responding. Since that one was obviously directed at me, I responded. Don't think I need your permission.

I even commented on what a great game Kopitar had, and how he made a statement. Then someone comes along with a cheap comment, so I responded.

If Kopitar can finish with 90+ points, win the Selke, and Nashville is lit it up in GA's so Kings finish first in GA's.....that would be one epic regular season for the Kings since the Voynov debacle.

Kings have been 2.54 GA, 3.27 GF, 6-3-2 for the month of March. Since the shellacking by the Blues, they've been 1.85 GA, 3.28 GF, 4-1-2

So last night I wondered how many games last season Kopitar didn't even shoot 3 times on goal in a game and I counted it up and the number came out to 49.

10 games where he had 0
19 games where he had 1
20 games where he had 2

He actually has 40 games this season with fewer than 3 shots on goal so I guess it isn't that uncommon for him.
