Post-Game Talk: [GM 67] Canucks lose to Hockey Clubbers | 1-3 | Hughes | Just No Juice

Hockey is entertaining in big part because it's challenging. Part of that is the tough schedule. Sure they are hard on some players cardio vascular wise, not impossible though. The whole guaranteed loss thing is a little whiny and silly imo. People love to complain about everything and anything though. If they're so horrible the league should do away with them then I suppose.

We did kind of suck tonight, and overall we're mediocre.
Nicky i hear ya im just a little triggered/frustrated by watching how bad their legs looked

At the end of the day it's not really a excuse given the advantage also comes the Canucks way

I do wish the league would either make both teams play under B2Bs circumstances or not at all. I think the fans that paid for tickets get hosed

4 Minute Powerplay
  • Coaches are really frustrated; there were a lot of plays that they just didn’t make; were too slow
  • Needed someone to take charge
  • Utah had 3 players on 1 Canuck and needed to attack
  • Not sure if they were tired or what but didn’t execute
Tonight’s Game
  • Doesn’t think Utah took the game over; Utah didn’t have a lot of chances
  • Had 6 minutes of powerplay
  • Was a 1-1 game going into the third, had 6 minutes of powerplay time, and were coming off a 22 hour turnaround from the last game; that’s the game
  • Didn’t get it done and they lose the game; that’s the story
Utah PK
  • There penalty killers are very aggressive up top and Tocchet immediately points out that the counter to this is to go down low and set up 2-on-1 or 3-on-; calls it “plain as day”
  • Coaching staff is a little frustrated because they have been telling the players that if you go hard up high, then the puck has to go low, and you have to make a play
  • Says the coaches are a little bummed out about it
Chytil
  • Weakens the centre position with him out
  • Is a speedy guy
Traffic in Front of the Net on the PP
  • Not reading the plays
  • Have to have someone in front of the goalies eyes
  • Maybe fatigue and some guys handle pressure differently
Lekkerimaki on the PP
  • Canucks scored on their powerplay so he wasn’t going to mix things up
  • Wasn’t going to take Boeser off; has to get him going
  • Lekkerimaki did get some time at the end
  • Will eventually get his opportunities
Watching the Standings
  • Disappointed but need to flush the loss down the toilet
  • Have Winnipeg coming and need to prepare for that
  • Day off tomorrow
  • Game to game from here on in
  • Have to bring the energy at the next morning skate; can’t let the loss get you down
  • Obviously players scoreboard watch but need to get the focus on why they didn’t respond to the pressure today
  • If this happens again, need to rise to the occasion; treat it as a learning lesson

I have a feeling St.Louis will be the team that gets in

It just hasn't been our year. Too many things from injuries, health issues and drama. This forward group just doesn't have enough drivers
Playoffs aren't happening. That 6 game road trip will seal their fate.

You almost hope they crash out sooner so we can start slotting in guys like Raty and Willander just to see what we have.

The fact we are even in a playoff spot right now despite the absolute clown show this season has been is impressive.

Problem is last year team is still fresh in my mind.

Overall just a disappointing product on the ice and hard to be optimistic on the future.
It's difficult to be optimistic when you're never playing with a full deck, or you're trying to repair an engine with several of the most useful tools missing.

That's the shape Benning left new management and why so many of us wanted to proceed and build the team in a more methodical manner. It give you more latitude for mistakes or unforseen circumstances which are bound to happen even with the most compitent management.

I was surprised how they pulled a rabbit out of their hat last season, but ultimately they were undone by Demko injury and Pettersson dying away.

This season has been a huge mess despite their ability to turn a massive loss (Miller) into a decent improvement on the back end.

Maybe they'll manage to solve the massive holes in the forward group, but dam things are stacked against them.

It's hard to muster the energy and enthusiasm for a team who's forwards that just can't seem to create any kind of offense.

On to the next one.

It's a B2B with no travel. No real excuse. They go home after yesterday's game, normal routine, etc.

Their problem today wasn't their "legs". It's what's plagued them for most of the Tocchett era: They are physically incapable of creating shots or scoring chances with any regularity.

Hey bro. No worries I'm not trying to take a dig at you or anything so my apologies if my wording was a little strong. It's just my personal opinion. I rather enjoy the difficulty level and randomness of the schedule. Like I mentioned in another post I rarely go to games so I fully admit I callously don't really care one bit about fans getting hosed or the corresponding enjoyment level. It's an expensive waste of money imo and not remotely worth the ticket price to begin with. Let the filthy rich people waste their expendable cash. For me it's all about the challenge of winning games be it exciting or mundane. It's all about winning. I find that exciting in and of itself.

I think it's entertaining and a great test that there are different challenges teams face throughout the season. There are not a lot of them.

Hughes playing LITERALLY half the game

Come on Tochett
A lot of that was PP time.

But c'mon. Playing Hughes 30 minutes is probably the least questionable decision Tocc was able to make. It's a must-win game. They desperately needed to win this if they wanted to make the playoffs. They're trailing.

In this situation, you're not going to play your Norris/Hart calibre defenseman as much as humanly possible? Especially when no one else on the roster can reliably create offense? Seriously?

Well, pretty much went the way I thought it would. Damn near impossible to win a B2B in todays league and they also left it all on the ice last night so I got nothing really to complain about.

This next week on the road is what it’s all about and should determine if we make the playoffs or not. They look like their up for the task so let’s cross them fingers and cheer them on!!!!!!

Well yeah, if 3 seasons or whatever is a honeymoon, then sure. It really depends on your opinion of him. Up until whatever happened to this group it seemed like he had turned a corner with us and wouldn't be a "honeymoon" kind of player anymore. But perhaps whatever happened with him was inevitable too. I don't know.
I mean, any of us last season would have said that he would have been a Canuck for at least the rest of his contract but sadly that didn't work out for us.

The guys on the post-game show will obsess for the rest of the season about all the playoff permutations and calculations as things wind down. But big picture, what does it really matter?

It's hard to find a single team currently above them in the standings who they'd beat in a seven-game series. Sadly, the draft and the rest of the off-season is far important than whatever happens the rest of the way.

I still think we'd somehow beat the Oilers in 7 only because it would be hilarious.

Disagree with Tocchet choice not to put Lekk on the pp instead of Brock. He has not looked good since the Miller trade and if you’re trying to make the playoffs you do everything you can to get there. Brock’s not scoring, give Lekk the opportunity to do it

i don't know if this team can sustain play to make the playoffs. they looked good before the break without hughes but since then they have hardly looked able to win a game without hughes being on. a lot of lost sheep and one very hard pressed shepherd.

lekkermaki may need to sit or go down. he is in danger of hoglandering out there.

What do you want them to talk about instead? Fantasy land off-season moves?

There's a month+ left in the season and over 6 months left til next season.

The thing is baby, just look at this roster on paper right now, we have so many significant holes in our top six, it’s actually kind of crazy how we’re even in a playoff position right now.

I wanna be optimistic, but my Goodness
Even being optimistic, this team has played over its head lately and even if we squeeze into the playoffs we just can't compete with the big boys in the west.

As a late 50s lifelong Canuck fan I've seen this movie before and our forwards need some decent centermen behind EP40 and Chytil honestly wasn't all that great before going down, his loss exposes a huge organizational weakness here.

It’s because when Hughes is in the lineup the play is always just to defer to him instead of doing literally anything else. idk if it’s a Tocchet thing or a team mentality thing. Either way it’s dumb af

It's obvious that Lekkermaki isn't ready yet, he is better off playing in Abby down the stretch and with our excess of wingers not moving Boeser at the deadline is looking really stupid right now.

It's the way the roster is set up, there are too few playdrivers on the Canucks.
