Man did a lot go wrong tonight, and has been for awhile.

One of the problems is that a lot of guys are struggling for understandable reasons (Joshua cancer, Hronek just back after injury, Demko back after long debilitating injury, Boeser concussion, Lekkerimaki has an NHL ELITE shot but isn't ready otherwise), but the whole team is struggling so there's nothing to keep these guys afloat while they regain their timing and confidence.

With that said, Myers looked absolutely chaotic, every single one of Boeser's puck touches was a catastrophe, Petey looked slow, weak, and devoid of confidence, Miller looks like he's (not so) quiet quitting, Demko looks like about the 65th best goalie in the world, Hughes is trying to do too much, DeBrush is mostly invisible, etc etc etc.
---

I think there's still a path here, and I think Willander will make a big difference, but this year might be kind of hooped.

I do think that knowing Willander is coming, and will be a good top 4 did sort of hamstring the team in a funny way into re-signing Myers and then hoping we could get to late March/April (Willander) with a committee of Desharnais, Juulsen, etc. But you just can't cheap out on puck moving to that degree.

Because with Hronek and Willander, it just wouldnt have made sense to give a big contract to Sean Walker or Matt Roy (for example).

I mean, you eliminate our top pairing and Soucy on his (this year rare) good nights, and we have a literal sub 90's expansion team D core in terms of puck moving. It was a brutal miscalculation.

But then there's so much bad luck there too.

Like, every single thing that could go wrong has other than Hughes, Lankinen, Sherwood, and long stretches of Garland.

And yet here we are, battling for 8th with a bunch of teams we have a far higher gear than. So if a few things had gone right, maybe we're comfortably in 3rd in the div, and can sort of hold off until Willander and then deal for the 2nd LD from a position of strength and with a bunch of guys increasing their market value.
-

The big thing to remember, is that we have to think of the long haul and to me, the long haul build includes:

Petey
Probably Lekkerimaki
DeBrusk
Maybe Sherwood
Possibly Garland
Likely Joshua

Hughes
Hronek
Willander

We almost certainly need to move Boeser for assets, and Miller increasingly looks like he has to go.

But we can't move them for less just because it would feel like we finally did SOMETHING.

If we have to suffer a horrible 38 more games and meekly go into the night to create a bidding war for Miller then you probably do it.

This is a year where, even if we figure things out, I think we're a 2nd round out at best. So keep our powder relatively dry and build towards the near future. Like literally next year.

If the unsubstantiated rumor by the guy on this board is true about Tocchet leaving if Miller goes has any truth to it, then he can obviously go too. That would be nonsense hostage taking by a coach in over his head.

Otherwise, reload and see what we can do building for next year.

I do think Tocchet will survive the season and I wouldn't be surprised if he is brought back on a two year deal with an option for example. That is unless Mike Sullivan is available.

As for management being aggressive, I think if you go over our discussions over the years, most of us think that it's not easy to go out and acquire a top 4 defenseman without overpaying. Rutherford has a pretty good track record but I'm not a fan of relying on good management/scouting being able to simply replace guys. I prefer retaining players when we find one that fits.

That's totally fine. If making a deal means we're gonna get robbed blind, I don't mind waiting. But when them team is doing this badly, especially when we're looking at the possibly not winning another game before the end of the month, they need to at the very least give a statement of some sort to show the fans that there is something to hope for.

Almost everything that could go wrong has this year.

Could be alot worse TBH.

Without Lankinen, this is a Bottom 5 team. Sherwood has been a fantastic surprise.

But this year should also hopefully give mgmt a reality check. Have not heard from them in awhile which is not great.

We keep hearing about they don't have any hesitation to pull off bold moves.

Now lets see if that's true.

Someone already said it - here or on twitter, I can't remember - and I thought it was a good point: One of the many ways you can tell something is really wrong beyond the hockey side of things is Boeser stinking it up in a contract year. You don't often see players do this. This is his livelihood. What happened that Boeser can't give it his all this season for a big contract?

Yeah, I mean, it's not like Boeser had to deal with a bloodclot and concussion within a 6 month span last year.

I can only imagine the conversations between ownership (FAQ) and the management team.

That's the thing. There's overpaying when it comes to trade and overpaying when it comes to contract (such as a UFA signing). Zadorov for example was a great trade but obviously management wasn't willing to pay what it took to keep him.

As for at least making a statement to fans, I don't think management needs to and it's pointless anyways. They could say they need to improve defensively and talk about Willander and others making progress etc. but who cares. They could buy out Desharnais or dump him and that would be a move to address a mistake but is that somehow important messaging? Not really.

I guess for me, I don't really care for management's explanation. I care about the on ice product. They can trade or buyout or say what they want but if it doesn't lead to the team closer to winning a Cup it doesn't mean much.

Some PR ass kissing would be better than nothing.

But in the end, like you said, action speakers louder than words, and result is king. Right now, there's basically f*** all for the fans to cheer for.

JT Miller not starting on PP1 cost us the 1st period. Miller, Pettersson, Boeser, Hughes - these 4 should always be on PP1 (no exceptions) the 5th can be Hronek, Lekkerimaki, Garland, DeBrusk etc. (Garland was phenomenal for most of the season but has struggled of late, clearly isn’t clicking on PP1). Not having Miller out on the 1st 2 power plays really killed the team’s energy, they had 0 shots halfway through the 1st with 2 brutal power plays.

Years of losing has made this core poor at handling adversity and they've fallen apart after the paper thin blue line collapsed when Hronek got hurt. Management thought they could gamble that they would be able to limp along and avoid getting fleeced in a deal for a decent defender, but that gamble has blown up in their faces.

Despite a run of terrible injury luck the season was salvagable. I don't think the foundation they started the season with was too bad and held up pretty well while suffering a lot of setbacks. At this point I think the ship has sailed on this season and I think we're going to retool at the deadline and draft.

To be fair, Rutherford does go on and do interviews (he does like to speak to the media). And Allvin as well but I'm not sure you want Allvin opening his mouth with the Canucks not doing well on the ice.
