Summary:

You started the draft with the 25th overall pick and forced back and out of the 1st round to dump Mrazek's contract.

Then at #38 you take a defense first 2-way forward which most professional scouting agencies had ranked in late 70's- early 80's range ( = mid to late 3rd round pick at best) in draft value. More effective defensively and a checker with limited offensive upside at this point. Perhaps there is a Anthony Cirelli 3rd line checking/shutodwn center in this future to replace and play a David Kampf role.

You then trade a reacquired 3rd #79 (Dermott deal) and trade it to move back for a 2022 4th (#95-Nicholas Moldenhauer) & 2022 fifth round pick (#135-Nikita Grebenkin) to try and not only draft 3 players again this draft like last one. .

Then you borrow from the future 2023 fourth round pick (?-?) to Predators for • 2022 fourth round pick (#122-Dennis Hildeby) . Hildenby a goalie is turning 21 years old next month and D-3 player already passed over in 2 drafts and the oldest player selected in this draft. He is also locked in for 2 more years into his SHL contract making available in 2025 to come to NA. Small sample size for stats but big goalie 6-6 235 lbs that might be a late bloomer at least that is the hope.

Our best pick is likely your last pick in terms of draft value Brandon Lisowsky but were talking a stocky 5-9 180 lbs but reasonable stats 33 goals 58 points in 63 games, but the Leafs organization already has a bunch of previously drafted smaller skilled wingers in this size range, Ultimately, the questionable first-step quickness on a 5’9” frame and the lack of real dynamic skill in traffic, with average high hockey IQ and vision makes this a reason he fell to the 7th and a longshot to future NHL success.

Leafs traded our own 1st (Petr Mrazek), 2nd (Mark Girodano), 3rd (David Rittich) , 4th (Nick Foligno), 5th (Ben Hutton), 6th (Riley Nash) and all you have to show for all that draft capital is a 39 year old oldest current skater in the NHL.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Grade: C-

First rounders: None

Day 2 picks: Fraser Minten, C; Nicholas Modenhauer, RW; Dennis Hildeby, G; Nikita Grebenkin, RW; Brandon Lisowsky, LW

Either way, this is a small class with few picks with limited upside and not necessarily the most exciting haul you’ll find this year. Despite picking only 3 times last year there are no Matthew Knies in this years draft class by the Leafs.
What's not to love? Haha

D-

3 decent youngish goalies got traded for a reasonable price and we didn’t make a move on any of them.

He traded back and went off the board to take a player who probably would’ve been there in the third round .

He traded away our first round pick to dump an overpaid contract that he gave out not even a year ago . Dubas made it seem like he did something positive , even tho he created the problem . Our draft picks were all long shots at best underwhelm 2 days . Hopefully free agency brings a better out come

I'll say C

I would have liked to draft a few Defenceman who have decent size and are defensive minded. This year we didnt even pick was D, but when we have lately in the earlier rounds, they've tended to be more offensive minded.

I like the goalie pick because with his size, if he can figure it out he could become dominant.

Minten might not be some star Top 6 Centre but if he can become a 3rd line Centre who chips in during the playoffs, those guys become pretty valuable until they cash in as a UFA

The trade was ok IF we do something with that cap space. If its just resigning Campbell and call it a day, I'll be very disappointed.

He nailed the early rounds. I'm not sure on the last pick, but the 7th pick is always a gamble. I'd give it a B+. People are shitting on the first pick, but they have no clue what they're talking about. He is a stud.

I see Minten as kind of a lukewarm pick compared to say, Robertson but you don't get a big faller every draft unless the rest of the league helps. However Knies was 37th rated with Central Scouting NA and 59th with McKenzie and Minten was 28th and 47th with those two so maybe there's a maybe.

Very difficult to have a great draft without plenty of picks and other clubs ignoring talent so its hard to give a strong rating but I am thinking the trade down to move Mrazek was a high value move. Lets ignore the fact that Dubas brought Mrazek in, the question is, how did the draft improve the clubs chances of club winning? I give it a c+ with an up or down based on the development of the selections.

My biggest worry is that we came out of this somehow less likely to hit gold in the goalie derby then we were pre draft. Right now hitting gold is most likely jack at 5 mil a year...

We made our move and half the teams that needed goalies out manuvered us prior to day 2 beginning.

Additionally, it was concerning how quickly we tried to panic ride the Matt Murray train ( with a possibilty of a cam Talbot tandem I guess)

If we're so devoid of ideas that this is the go to less then 24 hours after clearing the cap space why are we even clearing it for

We're currently in a bad situation where we quite obviously need a goalie. It's going to test dubas's negotiating metal

I can appreciate Dubas making more picks than was expected prior to the draft kicking off. Unfortunately, dropping in the order while being on the short end of a two for one trade isn't typically going to sit all that well with me. Since a great number of draft picks tend to benefit from the "wait and see" approach...

It would be nice if we make a couple moves like trading Holl and such and try to creep into that top 60-70 of next years draft. Supposed to be pretty damn talented.

This time they seem to have drafted players who can step it up in the playoffs. So the names might not sound that promising, but it might make sense to try to surround Marner, Matthews and Nylander with players like that, defensively responsible playoff warriors.
Whether this is the right draft approach remains to be seen, it remains exciting in any case.

I really like that we had 5 picks, not only 3.

Toronto didn’t pick high or often, but even with that in mind I think you’re still looking at their class and seeing some NHL potential. Fraser Minten I think will play, and there are several other prospects I think have chances to make it. In particular, the re-entry goalie Dennis Hildeby is intriguing. Realistically though you’re looking at one NHL player from this class in Minten.

Good draft. I would rate it a B. Excellent trade down to number 38 and Dubas was able to have Chicago take Mzarek. Many people thought it would cost a first or more to trade him. Some even thought we were stuck with him. True we used our first round pick, but we got the 38th only 13 spots down. We didn't get the extra 3rd or 4th though- it cost to move Mzarek. Some people are trying to spin it as a first rounder, but it is like spending $100 and getting $75 back. Sure you used the $100 but it didn't cost $100. Anyone who watched the Top Prospects game had a glimpse of the physically and 3 zone play that Minten might bring. Moldunhour looks good quick and talented. We got a goalie a tall one, and the seventh rounder lokks promising too! Solid B.

This is it right here. Can’t be too happy with the results, but I suppose it could be worse.

Everything after the Mitnen pick is an A+

That pick leave a sour taste that we made it on a hope and a prayer.

On the whole, it's a B-
If, and obviously it's a big if, but if Mitnen improves his shooting % this will turn into one amazing find

I like that he has a high IQ and can skate. He shot a ton but couldn't seem to find the back of the net. He literally turned 18 4 days ago so he did what he did as a 16/17 yr old so I'm optimistic the kid will improve

A.
Really doesn't matter because 2024, 25 is any possible impact and if we don't end this non cup streak by then Dubas, Shanny, Keefe will be gone and a new direction will be forged who will want a different style of player.

The only round that *really* matters is round 1. Of course, you can strike fire in any round (round 2 being the most likely), but if history tells us anything, round 1 is really where you get NHL players.

I get it’s a contending team. I understand that many teams do it. But I would prefer if we competed AND kept 1st round picks.

That said, Dubas did fine to get rid of Mrazek to drop 13 spots. I’ve never heard of a player past pick like 40 so I don’t know or really care until I see them play. Hopefully the team knows.

I don't know who any of these kids are, other than the wee paragraph on each of them I read after they were picked, so...........C?

I like the sound of a 6'6" Goalie.

ITT: Armchair scouts get upset over picks that they have never seen play and get truly form an opinion on. WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much reliance on consensus lists which hardly ever reflect the draft.

Also people getting worked up over the Minten pick make me laugh. The one compliant we can't have about the Leafs under Dubas is their 1st and 2nd round picks he has made. Lets see what they see first.

People saying he added picks, I get it. You could also argue he traded our 1st down to a 2nd for a player we could have got in the 3rd.

B+

Got rid of 3.8m in cap space to move 13 spots down, unless your picking in the top 10, It’s extremely hard to know what your gonna get from your prospect.
