Was hoping for more of a splash acquiring picks and moving out some bodies but was underwhelmed with the Mrazek deal.

That being said I expected some trade downs and Dubas to follow his normal philosophy.. based on what I’ve read it seems he did that. Will have to see if his picks continue to trend well post draft.

Average for me I guess, a B?

Every single person who gave a letter grade based on their view of the prospects drafted has their heads so far up their own ass. As if any of you have watched these kids, let alone enough to form an opinion about them. This forum is truly unbelievable.

C+ on the picks themselves. A- on the trade to dump Mrazek. D- on the number of picks we had. Teams that are good go for it, but I hate trading picks for rentals.

D plus to a C minus The only real impact this draft will make on the Leafs is Mrazek is gone.

Fair enough. So he gets an F for having to trade back (out of the 1st round) to unload the god awful contract (to free up cap space) he signed last off-season. Didn't move Holl and/or Kerfoot (who do not move the needle in any way to help the team) for picks to free up additional cap space.

This is the first draft since 2013 in which the Leafs have not selected a defenseman.

They did not draft a single defenseman, opting to go with four forwards and a goalie instead.

After starting the draft at a premium position (2-way center) and trading for trading back for an extra pick to take a swing on a overage D-3 netminder twice passed over in previous drafts, It’s also noteworthy that the Leafs filled out the rest of the draft with wingers, the least priority position with teams usually focused on C, D and G positions to build internally.

Forced to deal away your 1st round pick to erase a signing mistake, will always leave a bad taste in the mouth when it comes to ranking your GMs performance.

C. Minten is interesting but not great value at that slot when he's ranked in the 3rd everywhere and there were imo much better prospects available.

Moldenhauer is a decent pick but Grudinin was still on the board and he has way too much upside to pass on here with his incredible 4 way mobility, hockey sense and puck skills.

Hildeby did show some promise but the sample size in the SHL was so small this is more of a wait and see situation.

I wouldn't have selected Grebyonkin when Kocha Delic was still around.

Lisowsky was a legitimately solid pick.

And? You have someone in mind that will be 100% a guarantee to be better in the second round?

What a stupid argument.
Does it matter if he does? He isn't the GM or part of the scouting department (I'm assuming).

They checked hockeydb bro

For some reason I still can’t get over the Korshkov draft. Feeling similar today.

Hopefully not, then I’d be even more concerned. To say a pick was a mistake literally the day of the draft is pretty f***ing stupid in itself. I’m concerned for their (the poster’s) parents in this case.

And they read scouting reports from unqualified “scouts”.

Summary:

You started the draft with the 25th overall pick and forced back and out of the 1st round to dump Mrazek's contract.

Then at #38 you take a defense first 2-way forward which most professional scouting agencies had ranked in late 70's- early 80's range ( = mid to late 3rd round pick at best) in draft value. More effective defensively and a checker with limited offensive upside at this point. Perhaps there is a Anthony Cirelli 3rd line checking/shutodwn center in this future to replace and play a David Kampf role.

You then trade a reacquired 3rd #79 (Dermott deal) and trade it to move back for a 2022 4th (#95-Nicholas Moldenhauer) & 2022 fifth round pick (#135-Nikita Grebenkin) to try and not only draft 3 players again this draft like last one. .

Then you borrow from the future 2023 fourth round pick (?-?) to Predators for • 2022 fourth round pick (#122-Dennis Hildeby) . Hildenby a goalie is turning 21 years old next month and D-3 player already passed over in 2 drafts and the oldest player selected in this draft. He is also locked in for 2 more years into his SHL contract making available in 2025 to come to NA. Small sample size for stats but big goalie 6-6 235 lbs that might be a late bloomer at least that is the hope.

Our best pick is likely your last pick in terms of draft value Brandon Lisowsky but were talking a stocky 5-9 180 lbs but reasonable stats 33 goals 58 points in 63 games, but the Leafs organization already has a bunch of previously drafted smaller skilled wingers in this size range, Ultimately, the questionable first-step quickness on a 5’9” frame and the lack of real dynamic skill in traffic, with average hockey IQ and vision makes this a reason he fell to the 7th and a longshot to future NHL success.

Leafs traded our own 1st (Petr Mrazek), 2nd (Mark Girodano), 3rd (David Rittich) , 4th (Nick Foligno), 5th (Ben Hutton), 6th (Riley Nash) and all you have to show for all that draft capital is a 39 year old oldest current skater in the NHL.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Grade: C-

First rounders: None

Day 2 picks: Fraser Minten, C; Nicholas Modenhauer, RW; Dennis Hildeby, G; Nikita Grebenkin, RW; Brandon Lisowsky, LW

Either way, this is a small class with few picks with limited upside and not necessarily the most exciting haul you’ll find this year. Despite picking only 3 times last year there are no Matthew Knies in this years draft class by the Leafs.
