Here's my thing, I think you can argue that he's worth 8-9 million right now. But that can change very quickly. Treliving is a very smart guy, I don't think you want to get in a situation where you're paying a 36-38 year old over 8 million a season. That could be disastrous if he regresses.

Btw, my jets are burning and burning hot.

I agree, that's why I think we will cave for the first year or 2 with 9+, with it being heavily front loaded and declining, still thinking it ends up being a reasonable AAV.

I hate to keep quoting you, but this is my main concern. We can be pretty sure that Gio will be gold for 2 or 3 more years. Maybe 4. MAYBE 5. But really, anything 4 and beyond is a crapshoot.

It's fine, but quoting only further fuels my jets.

Unfortunately, what Treliving wants to do and what Gio will accept may not be the same thing.

If Gio wanted Max dollars, I don't think Calgary will pay it, because as you say, Tre is very smart.

I'm not worried about Calgary signing a bad deal. I am concerned that Gio might get traded, as it may be the best course of action.

Yep, but what team is going to pay that let alone pay a ton to acquire him? He's not a young buck. If yesterday's FA was any indication, I don't think a ton of teams will be offering him 8 year deals.

Does anyone else see Timonen as a comparable for Gio's career salary arc?

If we were to move Gio, I would want it East. Montreal would be ideal, Gio and Subban would be legit.

I of course don't want to move him though.

If anything, FA should be able to help our negotiations, Gio and his agent are smart enough to see, NOBODIES throwing around huge dollars right now.. Maybe entice him to take what he can from the home team ;)

How about 6 years 45m? (7.5mAAV) 10.0m/9.00m/9.00m/7.00m/5.00m/5.00m

Absolutely perfect. He gets top defenseman money, exactly what he deserves, and the cap isn't that atrocious. I want him to retire a Flame. He could, potentially, be the best captain in Flames history, even better than Iggy (obviously not points wise). Lanny was great as a captain with us, Iggy was respected league-wide (with, unfortunately nothing to show for it), but Gio defined this new era and could lead us to a cup(s) while being the catalyst for this new era, as well as being respected league-wide and being a top defender of his time. I remember when they were deciding between captains it seemed like a toss-up, but never has management made a better choice to wear the C. (Iggy was an obvious choice). Even our players sign contracts based on what Gio makes (see: Brodie) so as not to disrespect him.
If our best player and identity is making 7.5 AAV I doubt any other player would ask for more (as long as he was with the organization)

I wouldn't bet on that if the salary cap goes up a lot and say, in 2-3 years one of Monahan or Bennett needs a new contract an have hit the big time. Depending on how long their next contracts are.

THe nature of contracts is that over time they can rise a lot. In any event, Gio is the third highest paid d-man on the team in terms of salary, 4th in terms of cap hit, so I'm not sure what you mean?

Don't really want to go over 5 years, and I'd prefer 4. 1 year deals after that if the Flames are contending.

If the player is decent they are getting paid.

ROR and Saad got great deals.

For the most part, the serious lack of premium talent kept the amounts down, nothing else.

Most top talent had already received lucrative deals from their own team.

Just becuase there weren't a bunch of expensive UFA signings, doesn't mean that there are less big deals other there. Just the opposite.

I'm also on the side of wanting to stay away from anything past 4 years. If he wants 5+ years, he does it at a lower cap hot than Hamilton or I'd move him.I'd give him an exact Wideman contract if he wants 5 years.
