German football season 2023/24

Dortmund gets the one point only due to an extremely weak attempt at a save by Riemann. Not a whole lot going on for this team in the first two games.

I wonder how much of that is them adapting to life without Jude and how much is Adeyemi's injury. They had a good thing going with Adeyemi & Malen flying around Haller with Brandt & Bellingham driving things forward ahead of Can & the back 4. But this season they've been playing Brandt on the wing and I'm not sure if that's because they trying to figure the midfield out without Jude or because Karim was banged up and is still getting into form.

They should be playing:

Malen - Haller* - Adeyemi
Brandt - Sabitzer*
Can
Bensebaini - Schlotterbeck* - Süle - Ryersen*
Köbel

Bench
Moukoko*, Bynoe-Gittens, Duranville, Hazard, Nmecha*, Reus, Reyna, Özcan, Hummels*, Wolf*

Almost a remarkable goal for Leverkusen but offside.

...and of course it's Tah who's offside. If he weren't quite so lackadaisical Tah would've been a monster, but unfortunately he makes Süle look like a focused machine...

Feel like he's very emblematic of that Leverkusen team. They have a lot of great things going for them and on paper they've addressed their two biggest concerns with Xhaka and Boniface. But I just can't trust that team.

They were both excellent today, so was Wirtz. Although the opposition wasn't the toughest obviously.

Gladbach is the most matchup team in the league lol. Just like they are always worth betting on against Bayern, it is always worth betting against them when they play Bayer

But yeah, Xhaka's impulses from those deeper areas are something they've lacked for a number of years.

And between Schick's injuries & Hlozek still learning, Boniface hitting the ground running has been huge...he would've looked pretty good in the capital...

Yeah will be very interesting to see which way things go for you. Both with the roster and with what Seoane learned from his Leverkusen stint.

If Honorat, Plea, Cvancara, and Ngoumou can deliver up front I like a lot of your roster. I rate Elvedi, Itakura, Friedrich, & Wöber...haven't seen enough of that Italian kid to have an opinion on him...and Netz, Scally, & Ullrich are some very talented young FBs. While Kone, Neuhaus, Weigl, and Kramer is a strong quartet of midfielders.

I'm a little surprised you haven't tried Itakura at the 6 like he played for Schalke. I feel like sticking him in front of the back 4 could be the best way to balance your lineup

Starting 11:
Plea/Ngoumou - Cvancara - Honorat
Neuhaus/Weigl - Kone*
Itakura
Netz - Wöber - Elvedi - Scally
Omlin

Bench:
Plea/Ngoumou
Hack
Jordan?
Neuhaus/Weigl
Kramer
Ullrich
Friedrich
Chiaroda

*Rieder/Stach if Kone is sold

Elvedi's gone and wasn't even part of the team anymore.

Hopefully we can use that money for a backup striker and ideally another athletic midfielder(not Rieder), cause we'll need that.

Friedrich has been absolute crap since joining us as he's incredibly stiff and techinacally challenged.
He was a product of Union's system under Fischer and looks more like the guy that couldn't make it at Leverkusen and Schalke.

I like Wöber but he can't do it with Itakura as his only help while the midfield's consistantly run over.
Leverlisem was walking through our midfield all day and we gave Xhaka time and space which is exactly what you shouldn't do.

I also don't see Netz as a left back and more as a wingback. There's just too much defensive liablitly with him and he didn't get a minute today with 18 year old Lukas Ullrich being the one being brought on today.

Like I've said before, the schedule doesn't really help us(I don't expect much against Bayern this time around) and it's going to be important to get some points to stay away from the relegation zone this season.
If that's the case I think we'll be able to see a team getting better throughout the season and getting more dangerous as well.
If not it's going to be a tough season.

Yeah, it was quite a weak shot from Malen to let go in from that distance.

While Stöger's shot which gave the lead for Bochum in the first half was reasonably hard and good one, several Dortmund players came up short on that play.

First and most to blame, Wolf should have done a lot better to prevent that shot from happening at all. Then Hummels was in reasonable posture to block a near post path for the shot, but probably could have been a bit more aggressive running towards the shot. Hummels was duly yanked off at half time in favour of Sule.

And finally, if Kobel had done a bit better on that shot, he could have deflected the shot wide or blocked it.

On-loan Waldschmidt put Köln ahead against his parent club, but then the Wind changed in favour of Wolfsburg who came back to claim the win. Their main striker is certainly sailing in his best goalscoring form right now.

Epic striker duel between Nelson Weiper & Randal Kolo Muani.

Weiper draws first blood, after having a pen called back the teenager forced Trapp into a weak punch that fell right to a Mainz team-mate. No goal-involvement for the kid, but that goal doesn't happen without him challenging for that ball.

Overall he's shown off his good movement, his quick feet, and how well he uses his massive frame in his first start. Really like those young German attackers for Mainz (Weiper, Burkardt, & Gruda).

EDIT:
Mainz could put together a pretty solid all-German team (outside of the WBs):

Weiper
Burkardt/Gruda - Richter
LWB - Stach - Krauß/Kohr - RWB
Leitsch - Bell - Schulz/Kohr
Zentner

Weiper, Burkardt, Schulz, Gruda, and Stach are the obvious standouts, but Richter, Kohr, Zentner, etc. are all solid.

Forgot about Elvedi leaving. Thought that had fallen apart since it’s been so long since it was first announced to be almost done.

Friedrich is better in a deepsitting back 3, but you’ve also just asked him to cover too much ground with how open your midfield has been. If he’s the first CB coming off your bench you’re in better shape than most BuLi clubs. But you're right that him having to start in a back 4 wouldn't be ideal even with Itakura at the 6.

So maybe a back 3 is the solution?

Cvancara
Plea - Ngoumou
Netz - Neuhaus/Weigl - Kone - Honorat
Wöber - Itakura - Scally
Omlin

or even

Cvancara
Plea/Ngoumou - Honorat
Netz - Neuhaus/Weigl - Kone - Scally
Wöber - Friedrich - Itakura
Omlin
Re: Netz you can't read too much into kids PT in individual matches, he started your first match, and will continue to grow throughout the season.

Gruda isn't a Musiala or Wirtz level talent, but I really like the kid every time I see him. Seems like he'd be a great Unioner, on top of being a very talented young attacker.

And Haaland (3 in 3) is almost keeping up with Kane (3 in 2) :sarcasm:
Hard to blame Erling for getting lazy when he gets to pick on EPLol defenses every week and he knows they're going to win the league whether he tries or not :naughty:

Poor guy...

My name sadly qualifies as well, though not Kevin specifically.
Luckily Behrens is the Alpha-Kevin :sarcasm:

I don't quite qualify, but as a Benjamin instead of a Benedict, my full name sticks out a little bit...although I think I'd rather have been a Benedict lol

Doekhi & Becker will miss the Leipzig match after picking up knocks against Darmstadt. Fofana got banged up too, but there's been no announcement about his injury yet, so hopefully he's fit next weekend.

Hoping Khedira is good to go, but assuming that none of our midfielders recover in time, I think I'd like to see us play:

Fofana - Behrens - Volland
Gosens - Laīdouni - Kral - Juranovic
Leite - Knoche - Trimmel
Rönnow

Kane's better.

Kane's had less support, but he's also done less with it. So I dunno if Kane can hit the same highs that Lewa has, even if he's never been as ineffectual as Lewa is for his NT. That's why I won't be surprised if he never matches Lewa's tallies for FC Hollywood.

According to kicker Pavard is off to Inter. Good for all, but who plays the right side now?

Mazraoui, Laimer, maybe someone like Chalobah/Geertruida...and I won't be surprised if they play with all 3 of de Ligt, Upamecano, and Kim next to Davies/Guerreiro.
